im getting 6 chicks of 6 different breeds from a hatchery and raising them with a broody foster silkie. Because the limit is 25 and ill give the extras away. should i order 3 of each breed as im going to keep so that if one of my chicks dies i will have a extra of that breed, or should i get the extra 19 chicks a totally different breed so that they will be easy to tell apart from the ones im keeping
sorry if my wording is confusing lol

what are the 6 breeds you're getting? you may be able to tell all 6 apart quite easily....depending on the breed. on the other hand....if you order your 6...and then say....19 white leghorns....u could run the chance of one of your 6 dying in the shipping. you COULD order 2 of each of the breeds you want, and then the rest a totally different breed....that way if one of "yours" dies, you have a back up. i'm ordering 8 chicks from My Pet Chicken (8 was their minimum order) and i can only keep 5. i DEFINITELY want a BO and a SCM (so that makes 2) then i want to keep 3 EE as well. well i was dumb and ordered 6 EE....1 BO, and 1 SCM. now i'm super worried that the BO or the SCM may die in shipping. i'll be praying that's for sure!

I'd order at least two of each breed, I don't know how your hawk problems and other stuff is where you are, but where I am things usually go wrong lol. Like the other day, beautiful weather, my boss gave me six chicks, 3 dif. breeds. So I got them set up in the brooder with a heat lamp, and sure enough, it went from 70 degrees to snow and strong winds, knocked out the electricity, and I lost a couple... Plus we have more of these "endangered"

redtail hawks around here than you can shake a stick at. Just lucky I guess lol. So yeah, get more than one of each for sure lol.
