My new babies should be in here tomorrow and the next day (I hope!)
I picked this wild bird feeder up and wanted some feed back on using it as a feeder.
It says it holds up to 4.5lbs of feed.
Does anyone see any draw backs to using it?
They will all be about 4-5 weeks old when they arrive and they are all bantam breeds.

I'm also planning to use a 32oz rabbit water bottle attached to the outside of the cage.
I have a x-large small animal cage I'm going to use as a brooder until my coop arrives and they are a tad older. Should I hang the feeder or set it on the floor of the cage? It's dimensions are: 40½"L x 18"W x 20½"H Here's a picture:

Am I crazy for using this for a brooder for 9 chicks?
Thanks for the advice! Critical feedback is welcome

That cage will be too small when they are two weeks old, IMO. You will probably be able to put them in their coop by then, especially if you can rig some heat and they are outdoors some during the first two weeks.

You need to be sure they are all drinking out of that waterer.

Even though they are bantams it's still too small? The silkies are 5 weeks today and the ameraucanas are I think 4 weeks.
They all showed up today, the silkies were a day early

A couple of them died during shipping

I started crying at the post office it was horrible!
They have a rabbit style waterer and they are all using it like champs.
Here's all 7 of them in the brooder, does it look ok size wise in comparison to them? I can get another one of these cages if I need to. I think I saw one on craigslist recently.

The coops should arrive and ready to go in two weeks and since the weather is warm I'm going to try and put them in it then

I've been putting a bowl of water in there every half hour or so until I'm sure they all have it figured out. It went from just the ameraucanas using it since they were already use to one to the silkies catching on. Its really cute

I was using a standard hexagonal hanging bird feeder (from Walmart !) for the ten baby chicks I was caring for --- it worked quite well for the several weeks I had them until I turned them over to their eventual owner ... sure kept them from fouling and kicking their starter food; they preferred it to the conventional skinny rectangular metal "chicken feeder"

Can you show me a picture or link of what you had? You got it at walmart?? lol The only walmart I've checked at has some feed but that's it.
The chicks are using the feeder but I had to put it at an angle so they could get to both sides since they were having a pile up!
