I love that. That's so great you're giving her the best life even though she's probably a permanent free loader. Buff Orpingtons sound like a good choice for you right now.Two more Buff Orpingtons. Choices are very limited when ordering started pullets and I did not want to risk getting more hybrids even though I love the EEs. We have had bad luck with all the RSLs and EEs previously. The Orp has been a consistent layer, almost every day (thank God) and seems healthy. Given our required small number restriction of four total we could only acquire two more. Then there's Goldie - most would cull her due to her taking up valuable space and consuming feed but we just can't do it. She's resilient and been through so much. Still very fubar. Every day is different with her and it's a gamble. We decided to let nature run it's course to allow her to be a chicken for as long as she is able.
At some point in the future when we can expand operations (housing, acres, chicken math), we will have a rainbow of chickens. That's the goal anyway. Until then, we'll be thrilled to have three healthy orp layers.
I'm not surprised that the choices are limited. Sounds like all hatcheries are getting some good business this year.
