When should I toss the clear one? I've read horror stories that bad eggs can explode under the broody and ruin the hatch. Today is Day 12.

Also, another newbie question... did it seem like some were more developed than others? One of those eggs looked completely full! Normal?

They only explode if they have been contaminated by bacteria, so whenever you think about it or next time you candle. As far as development goes, depending on how they are positioned in the egg at the time of candling can make them look different than other eggs. Take pics again next weekend (lockdown) when you candle, you'll know for sure if any quit.

Thanks! I honestly wasn't going to candle again. Figured I'd just let nature take its course but if you think I should, I will.

How will I know for sure if they quit...?

Edit: disregard! I think I found some good examples. I'll take more pictures next weekend, of course.

It's totally up to you if you want to candle or not, I don't see any harm either way😊 Veining is a dead giveaway, once veins start to receed or disappear the chick has quit, also often times the embryo will seem to float around the egg when you tilt it and is just a black blob (best way I can think to describe it).

I'm home sick today (injured helping a friend move over the weekend) so I decided to check on the broody's eggs while she's off causing chaos in the run. My intention was to remove the one I saw was clear last weekend.

I went inside the barn and put a thick towel over my head and candeled to find the bad one. It looks different now. It still doesn't look as dark as the others but it's not completely clear anymore. No bad smells at all. So I decided to just leave them all. Figured it can't hurt.

I won't candle again. Just let nature take its course. Today is Day 15.

I'm still dealing with Special's sinus infection. I wanted to get her better and moved out of the pen so I can have that free in case I need to move mom & babies. Right now I have to give her Baytril once a day so she won't be ready to move back into main coop until Day 20 of incubation. Cutting it close! I'll have to clean the pen real good in preparation. Just in case any of my hens decides to go after the babies or mama.

I hope you get to feeling better soon! I know there are a lot of horror stories, but honestly I've never experienced any aggression towards any chicks that have been raised by broodies or brooded in the run and running amuck a week after hatch with the bigs. Besides a peck or 2 to "telling them no" or accidentally getting stepped on (no harm done) it's always been easy breezy. I hope everything goes great and I can't wait for pics!

I'm getting pretty excited (even though this was kind forced on me).

I also have great news.. I'm in the process of buying the property next to us so pretty soon Wing It Ranch will be double the size. 20 acres total to raise all the other animals I'm wanting!
