So in your experience, this is a sign he'll be a good rooster? I like that he gives me space but I worry that he thinks I'm a threat. I really would like to keep him.

Please don't attack me, boy!
It is good that he gives you space, but honestly it's way too early to tell. When they are that young they haven't developed any confidence yet, that's why he's scared of everything. Come February or March you'll start to see the change. Don't freak out cuz sometimes young cockerels just coming into their hormones, can be a bit sloppy and rough with the ladies (they don't have any technique yet). As long as no one is injured, I let it play out. Sometimes it's a peaceful transition, other times the top few hens throw down a challenge. You'll just have to wait and see. As far as you being a threat, you'll never be "one of his ladies" and you don't want to be, but respect is a two way street in my opinion. For example, I had to clean up one of my old ladies bottom, when she protested, Langdon got agitated and made an alarm call, but just stood by and watched me, never tried to attack or crowd my space. When I was done, everyone went about their business like nothing ever happened.

My previous (accidental) cockerel definitely took time to mature. He'd make attempts at mating but the top hen would often block him from others and chase him down to show him she's the boss. Is was actually pretty funny because he was bigger than her but would always back down.

He was great at first then turned on me and would attack constantly. Fingers crossed for this guy!

I had that happen with the first cockerel I ever had, one of my hens just kept "cock blocking" him, until one day he fought back, they fought on and off for 2 days until she finally submitted. There were a couple comb injuries but nothing major and everything was peaceful after that. The Isabel Ameraucana cockerel I had, blindsided me one day and got me from behind, I went straight to my she-shed and got an old broom stick (I had every intention on culling him immediately) but the hubs told me not to. I ended up selling him with full disclosure and the gal said he's been an angel at her place. Having a good boy is great, and they are lovely to look at, having a bad one, in my book, will not be tolerated. I know you won't put up with it either, so I hope your new fella minds his manners.
