Has anybody figured out how to prevent wing tips from flipping out at the heavy blood filled pin feather stage
and even later after corrective wing taping when the feathers come in and they still don't tuck into the natural position?
Is it just caused by too fast of growth, too much protein or is it a breed specific problem?
Does this occur in other breeds of geese?
Should we try to slow down growth by only feeding grass and no feed when we have enough grass?
I do not feed anything to my goslings when they have access to grass during the day and they act very hungry
when i put them up for the night and dive into their feed.
Should one just feed only what they can clean up in say 10 minutes and no free choice throughout the evening?
ANY ideas on how prevent these issues?
Kind of frustrated that this has to be an issue every year.

Can you post a picture of what you mean? I'm new with two this year and am watching the wings closely but I really am not sure if I could spot a problem.

It is when the very tip of the wing gets so heavy with the feathers coming in that it flips outwards instead of tucking in... Or straight up in the back of the wings.
Sebastopols have a tendency to also get angel wing where the wing tips straight out like airplane wings. That is Twisted Wing Tips. There is a difference.

This is my first year raising goslings. I am interested to see posts...suggestions. I have one older gosling coming into feather showing the same.

its not just sebbies where you see it. seen pictures on here of other breeds with the tips jutting out looking like fonzy thumbs

if its a year after year thing I would look and see if its the same breeding pair/trio producing weak winged off spring having the repeated issue. If it is then they shouldnt be paried up again since something genetically isnt right.

I think the problem MIGHT be more problematic in Sebastopols because of their curly gene mutation.
Aside from flipping at the drop wing pin feather stage I've had many cases of early onset twisted wing tip in goslings under 6 months old.
I have a test group right now...14 of my youngest goslings that I'm restricting food intake to only one feeding (1 part oats to 1 part grower )
in the evening when I put them in for the night. I take any remaining food away from them after about 10 - 15 minutes and give them some grass
hay to nibble on instead of each other.
Then during the day they're on pasture with no access to feed but I've always done it that way.
I never set feed out during the day other than grass hay during winter months.
Prior to this goslings would have free choice feed through the night.
It will be interesting to see if this makes any difference.

Still wondering why more Sebastopol people aren't responding to this since it is a major topic on the Sebastopol forum.
Please share your opinion on solving this problem.
You don't have to be an expert..person observations, management and results do collectively carry some weight.
Thanks for any input.

With our very first set of goslings from Samantha and Sammie I let Samantha hatch the goslings. I gave the waterfowl grower feed twice a day. The rest of the day Samantha and Sammie were with the goslings free ranging and eating grass. I still ended up with goslings where the feathers shot out and did their thing. I have now tired to feed more vegies to the goslings, romaine, celery and less grower. I stop feeding grower at 3 weeks of age and still the wing tips are hanging down and out. I am going to have to tape the wings now.

I am wondering if anyone on here has just let momma hatch the goslings and let them feed on grass the whole time? The only people who can do this is someone who lives in the warmer climates. To not feed any feed what-so-ever to the goslings only free range???

My friend is doing just that with embdens. His goslings seem health just small for their age. When I got my goslings last year from Metzer's I read on his blog how to prevent geese from being overweight. I used his info to figure out how much to feed. I used flock raiser and oats. I did a 50/50 split for flock raiser and oats. I don't have Sebbies but I had Americans and an Embden. The geese got the minimum feed and grazed all day. The geese grew well and never had angel wing. I followed Metzer's recommendation for feeding ducks as well last year. This year when feeding ducklings I forgot to cut the protein and 1 out of 4 got angel wing , on both wings.

These are just my observations. Not an expert.

I just saw this now.
I have one baby already with TWT on one side, and another with the flipped out wing on just one side. Sometimes it can tuck it up, but when they are walking...its just flopping all over. I tried wrapping, but they all play with it. And you know what happens when you separate!

I have them on low-protein feed and the brewers yeast, with grazing. We don't have a lot of grass. There are lots of other greens that they eat though.
Have never had an issue with the other breeds I have raised- Toulouse, Americans and Cotton Patch.
