"No, no, I'm fine!" He said quickly, making another splash in the pool. "Just dandy . . ." Forlorn, he shut his eyes tight, and before he could reason himself out of it, waded up to his long black spurs. It was too far. Images accosted him, the smiling Blackthorn pushing him backwards into the river, the water crushing, pushing him down, slamming him to the bottom. There was no sound, except for a rushing noise. No sight, except for bubbles of air leaking from his lungs. Air, there was no air! The torrent knocked him around, throwing him against rocks, logs, beating him unmercifully as he tried on his short little chick legs and downy-covered wings to fight his way to the surface. The air was gone, the light was gone, and darkness was prowling around the corners of his eyes.
Bloodwing shook, in the middle of the pool, realizing that, as the little crimson chick could not breath, that his lungs were not working, either. Quickly he adjusted his breathing so that they came long and slow instead of in short gasps.

"D-drowning?" quickly he coughed, his voice sounding like that of a hyperactive mouse. "No, of course not! This pool isn't even deep enough to go over my head." Dismally aware how he must look, trembling and standing in the middle of a bath, huddled up like a chick in the rain, he leaped out of the water and shook his feathers. "That was refreshing!" The smile that he longed to form on his beak wouldn't come, and he turned away.
