WINNERS ANNOUNCED p 10!! Most Beautiful Thanksgiving Dinner photo

Hey Banter, The turnips au-gratin is my mothers recipe. My hubby and brother in law cleaned them up while my SIL turned her nose up at it. It's one of those dishes where you either love it or you hate it.

Here it is:

8 servings
3 lbs. turnips
1/4 lb. butter

1 clove garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon thyme
salt and pepper to taste
3/4 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons bread crumbs

Peel the turnips and slice as thin as you can. Smear butter on the bottom and sides of the baking dish (mom uses a gratin dish?) and distribute garlic over the bottom. Add the turnips and on each layer dot some more of the butter, a little thyme and salt and pepper. When the pan is filled, pour cream of the turnips, sprinkle with the bread crumbs and dot with remaining butter.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 min.

Ohhhh, I love this recipe. I make it during the coldest winter months because it can be so rich and calorie intense with the cream and butter and cheese.

Next time you make it use sweet potatoes sliced thin and mix them with the turnip roots. In the layers also sprinkle in some parmesian cheese. Mix some of the cheese with the bread crumb topping too.

It is savory and sweet and hearty.

I thnk you will love it!

Here are my entries...

We are a family of three, but we enjoyed a big yummy feast. I made everything (well almost everything) from scratch and my DH made the mashed potatoes.

Ready for the table...
