Winter Gardens/ Greenhouse!

I like it cooked but didn't care for it in salad.
The chickens go crazy for it. I think it can take more heat than lots of other greens. It didn't bolt as fast as spinach as spring warmed up.
I didn't like it raw, so I just figured it wasn't for me. Someone suggested I try it sauted, and I found it delicious.

Spinach doesn't grow very well for me, so I'm hoping that chard will grow better. It would be really nice if I could grow greens in the green house. It's only passive solar heat, and this time of year, we don't get a lot of sunshine.

The only way I've been able to grow spinach is in potting mix in a half barrel. I think it just does not like my soil. I grew it through winter a couple times and it started bolting soon after it was mature. Maybe it was the variety?

My step dad once told me that spinach will grow where it wants to grow. I've had some nice plants, some puny plants. They all seem to bolt before I get much from them.

Next week, I'm going to buy some collards at the store, give them a try. Maybe I'll like those too... ?

Maybe I'll like turnip greens or beet greens. :th:eek:

Old dog, new tricks. :)

Never occurred to me to try chard raw. I always cook it. And yes chard is far easier to grow than spinach, I've never had issue with it bolting and it'll keep going until freeze hits (at which point it's 50/50 if it survives).

Collards are tougher, like kale with extra chew? I usually grow 1 plant a year, that's more than enough of collards for me.

Turnip greens are tasty, more tender. Beet greens are somewhat similar to chard and I mostly eat them because hubby loves beets, so no point in wasting the greens.

More carrots!!!!
