Winter in New England

your plan sounds fine, you really dont need a heat light in there. but if you want to and you do be sure it is very secure, we did have a fire in our coop it didnt get out of control it happened in the walk way where there arent any shavings, however it did burn a hole right threw the floor. and we happened to go out and find it so we got lucky if we had not gone out there the birds would all be dead, so it is very important to have it double triple fastened.

I found the 11 watt sign light bulbs in a lighting store. I was there looking for another fixture when I saw them. Low watt so they just cost a few pennies to run. So I don't worry about a timer (my timer died anyway) and just leave it on all of the time.

Here's a question, do you have to have a light on? I did buy an infrared for warmth and am installing it today (with hubby's help) and I've had a heater for water for years for my guineas but I've never heated the guinea coop and they've been great without the heat. Are guineas that much more resilient?

And my fuzzy's go to bed on their own each night, well except my two blue silkie hens are funny about needing a little boost sometimes but usually when I go out to put them to bed they're all cozy in their special spots ready for me to close the coop door.

I will close up some of the screened vent holes and depending how cold it gets i may get a heated waterer-otherwise I will get a heavy bowl and break the ice as needed.
(for my big flock of 2 chickhuns lol - 1 still isnt laying! :|)

btw anyone here in CT?
