Winter is right around the corner!

My first winter with ducks too! I am getting nervous, and feel like I am not prepared. Today is the first rainy day we have had in MONTHS and it is snowing up in the mountains. Yikes. I keep hearing that ducks are a breeze in the winter though.

That’s what I’ve been hearing too, that they’re well insulated and regulated their body temperature well! Louisiana winters aren’t very harsh, and it still feels like Summer here- I want it to be Fall already!! So, I’m not too worried, but I don’t want to be unprepared if there is a chilly spell.

My set up is simple.....I have a tarp over my run and wrap vapour barrier all around it...Shavings and straw in the house and straw down in the run in one area....Ducks can't stand the wind....Feed free choice and fresh water at all times, meaning not frozen ...I use rubber stock bowls for the simple fact they are easy to flip over and knock all the ice out of....When temps dip here bellow -25C I heat the House although it's not too hot...Water still ices over but nothing as cold as outside....

I think it's funny that I'm worried about my ducks through an NC winter and yall are from places like Michigan and Canada. But still- I want to be prepared too!!!

Do for your Birds as you see fit....I do and my Birds thrive all winter.....Best wishes.

Usually around February we get a few single digit days, I figure that just gives me an excuse to put them in the basement for cuddles

If it's not too cold in your area?...They actually do great as long as no wind....

Hello...
I make daily in the winter a warm water soup for my Ducks...I feed it before they get locked up for the night...
I use romain lettuce, tomatoes, peas, cucumber, two alfalfa cubes and a bit of feed...They gobble it up....
In the morning they eat regular feed and I give them a bowl of warm water to drink....The rest of the day I give regular feed and water....

Thanks Chickens Really ( and everyone else too) that was exactly what I was looking for! Just out of curiosity, how umm “soupy” do you make it? Is the consistency more like a soup or thicker like maybe chili? Or do they even care as long as it’s warm and full of goodies?

As a person raised in NC but relocated to Ohio, I can tell you that winters up here are a whole different animal! But at least we don’t get the ice storms like you guys do!

Yea, I would prefer some fluffy snow.
