Winter is right around the corner!

I think all of us about to go through our first winter need to come to grips with the fact that we’re going to have to work harder to ensure the welfare of the animals that depend on us! The little hints and tips that are being passed on may work for us...or they may not. Either way it gives us some direction and is much appreciated.

How cold can it be outside befor you fire up a heat lamp for chickens?
Don't. Nowhere short of the Arctic circle should, IMO. Too many risks & birds are hardy. Mine survive -40 just fine.

I used to put on a heat lamp when it got cold but after nearly setting the coop on fire with an extension cord I refuse to do it again.

Has anyone tried using something like this to keep their water from freezing? I have a 5 gallon water dispenser that I've thought about trying it on.
