Insulated coop: partially

Amount of ventilation (approximate sq.ft.)you employ during the winter: varies, but mostly around 3 sq. ft.

Coop size: 10x16

Litter method:Deep litter

#of chickens in coop: 28

Location (city and/or state and/or zone): Madison, Nebraska

How many winters have you been through with your chickens?: First

(Optional) briefly describe how your flock has fared using these methods: Been in single digits a few times already, and they are doing well. I'm going to get a heater for the water.

My chicken are doing well and always have. This is the first flock that are having trouble with the winter stuff (snow) on the ground.

Litter method:
Deep litter on a sub-ground level dirt floor, brick foundation

#of chickens in coop: Varies from 10 to 50

Location (city and/or state and/or zone): Midwest

How many winters have you been through with your chickens?:

(Optional) briefly describe how your flock has fared using these methods: Okay, I guess, still get eggs through the winter and the water rarely freezes inside with the heat from the composting litter and chicken body heat.

- excellent - they love the winter - we think it is a mistake to let them get used to heat lamps etc...because power can be iffy (wind and ice storms) so they are aclimatized. We have heritage breeds because they are tougher and we use wide planks so their tootsies don't get cold. Our birds range all over the neighborhood and there is very little weather that keeps them home. Maybe sleet. I feed them oatmeal on the coldest days....
