winter protection ideas

So after joining this forum and doing some reading, I have changed my mind on what to do for this winter.

I will still need to run an extension cord for the watering can, but I think I will forgo the heat lamp.

There is plenty of space, so I think I will build a coop (a basic box design) within their area. I hope this will give the chickens an extra level of protection if needed. I am thinking 4 x 8 (plywood size, how convenient) with one end open.

I know this isn't very specific. Any ideas?
