You can just cut a bigger hole in the lid (like cut away most of the inner part of the lid) and cover with chicken wire like you are now. That would probably work for you. They are at an age now where they would benefit from the extra ventelation
And yes. you can definitely wean them from the light now:>) I know how you feel, I remember my first chicks...LOL! They are so much fun! And I am partial to silkies.

The reason I thought to go to a chicken wire lid was so they could get more natural light also as well as letting heta and humidity rise out. May be time doe simply a larger brooder rather than cutting this one further, a brooder that is clear or just larger that will bring more light.

OH I was thinking that was a higher watt bulb. They should be ok, especially with you removing the lid a bit now. With silkies you don't even need a cover, they don't jump at all

I have mine in a large cardboard watermelon box from walmart and never had a cover on them at all. They are in a heated shed though so no need for a heat lamp at all. Silkies are just so darn sweet aren't they!? I hope you show pics of them! I would love to see them
