Winter weather

It seems your question has been answered by many more knowledgeable than me, but I thought I'd add our protocol for what it's worth. We have six silver Appleyard ducks on the coast of Maine. Their run is predator-proofed and covered, and they have 24/7 access to it unless it's approaching -5 to -10F. When it gets that cold, we lock them in the duckhouse after dinner with no food or water until morning. Our duckhouse is elevated (~4x8') and has a deep bed of shavings and straw. We are quite generous with the straw, especially when we're approaching single digits. As you can see in the picture, we wrap three sides of our run in plastic to protect from wind.

Our guys like to be out and swimming if it's in the 20sF and up, but otherwise they come out, have their soup, slide around a bit and head back into their run. When I check the camera during the day, they are often snuggled in to the duckhouse dozing when it's cold.
I appreciate everyone's input but yes you all have had the same response to let them choose and have access to the house. Oh WOW you guys have an incredible duck run and house setup. Those are some beautiful and lucky ducks. It makes mine look very humble on this little homestead in Maryland. Mine is safe and predator proof but not as big and fancy as yours. I love everything about it!!!! Wait until I show my husband, boy is he going to be in for it. Just kidding I will be nice to him BUT he is definitely going to see that pic of yours. It is really beautiful.

Why yes I do! I am just gonna watch them and let them choose. This is their 1st winter and my 1st with ducks so I am probably overprotective. I was concerned with their feet but since half of the run is covered and with pine and aspen shavings and straw they can get to a dry place outdoors as well with access to their house. You are right Miss Lydia they are smart little cookies and I have seen them run in their house when they hear a hawk or to get out of the wind. I have put up plastic around the run as well to protect them from the high freezing winds we are expecting this week. I just added some pics that I posted on another thread yesterday. Some are from warmer weather.
Your ducks are adorable! My wife is from Maryland. Did you guys get that big snow? We're looking at a potentially large storm this weekend!

Yes they predicted 1-3 inches on Saturday but we ended up with over 8 inches which is not bad but not what was expected either. And we have more coming in the next few days that will pile on top of the existing frozen snow. The roads can be quite sketchy up here especially since we have had so much flooding since May that resulted in road closures that we are still dealing with. I am actually from Texas so I am getting schooled a bit on winter. I made a point not to complain about the cold or anything wintry mix associated to the locals until I realized they are more bundled up more than me and were complaining more than anybody. LOL. We just moved up here almost 2 years ago. My husband is originally from here but had been in Texas for 30 years. We had a cabin that we visited a few times a year here so we packed up our things, sold our house and moved to the Maryland mountains. we have been converting a little fishing cabin into a home ever since. Talk about tiny house living. Whew! And then proceeded to get ducks. Ha!
