Wire vs solid walls?

My building skills are nonexistent but here is what I have. It’s all found materials so it ain’t pretty, but it’ll keep predators out and birds in.

I may actually swap my rabbit growouts to this system and put the birds in my rabbit condo system in breeding trios. I’ll have to see how things shake out.View attachment 2213768
I love that design, but you’ll want to make sure you keep an eye on the quail when you’re opening the hutch, or change the door to be a little smaller. Younger quail might bolt!

Those look a lot like my first trio cage. Are there two pens per level or just one with two doors?

Bigger quail might bolt too ;). My trio of batchlor bolted when their door got unlatched. Stayed in the room, but they were more than hsppy to poop all over during the night

It’s one long hutch per level. Are they like songbirds? I used to do wildlife rehab and the jays were the worst for bolting! We’d usually hold up cloth to discourage it. The doors are shy of 3 feet wide

I just got them home! It turns out they were the last of a small meat farm’s stock. Several of them are missing some feathers on their backs, I’m assuming from either crowding or breeding? They’re otherwise clean (as was the farm). At any rate they’re cooling off from the car ride in their hutch and seeing the outdoors for the first time so they’re quite slow moving. I do see the door issue...I’ll have to think on it. I think if I keep no more than 8 in a hutch I’ll be able to manage them okay. If it ends up being a problem I’ll split the doors. Only one attempted flying when the farmer was catching them.

I even got a travel stress egg on the way home, hah!
