Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Morning Everyone! Was gonna mow last night and decided not to now the rain is moving in early
somad.gif
Cleaned the coop down to the concrete yesterday a mouse went tearing outside. Big mistake Goldie got a snack. Rearranged the coop too. Took Pea and Btwo's personal roost away and once again kicked Fric and Frac out of their bachelor pad. This time it's permanent! Nice to have the bedding feed storage area back. Now I can clean the machine shed. If it isn't raining next Sat. will have the youngest DD over to learn how to butcher. Cind should have qtr'd Buster and made soup wasn't enough meat on his breast for a sandwich.

Had to coax the kids in last night but they went. Sure is a lot quieter around here. Guess I'll get the onions taken care of today. Maybe the carrots too. Will be nice to be down to just the maters and brocolli for our winter larder! Got rid of 6-7 qts of cukes then the BFF called looking for some

Now have orders for 16 qts glad someone can use them! Better get in the garden so I don't melt in the rain

good morning, I got back home from Menard's by 7AM with a new 40"TV and 4 cans of coffee.. rebates on both..

there are 3 more guineas in the hatcher.. this hatch might go on and on because it is the 54 eggs from the community nest I stole.. some of the eggs might have been started and some fresh.. ??

looks like some rain is on the way..

we set up a pen for the baby peachick and his turkey buddy.. They are growing at about the same pace.. I will bleach the pen before they go out into it.. It is not a very large pen, so it is going to be sort of temporary.. I think I will have to get ampitious and build some more breeding pens.. 4 ft x 8 ft. this time.. the 10 footers are too hard to catch the birds in.. they always run to the opposite end, and unless there are two people, impossible to catch..

This Menard's coffee is pretty good.. Annie won't be home with the do-nuts until after 10AM, though.. I was half way home before I thought about do-nuts.. sh!t !!!

Cind, the peacocks can be sexed before 2 years old.. they just don't mature until then.. The peacocks do not get that final tail display until then.. My peacock is 1 1/2 years old but he is still very pretty..

If I could get some eggs, I could hatch a bunch for everybody looking for them.. As babies, they are very tame.. I think if they would be handled a lot as they grow, they would make great pets.. maybe I should do an egg search on line..

Good morning! Just have minute again before I go and cook at the Pines...and I probably wont get but a sentence written at this rate---I am misspelling every other word! Must still be half asleep. I let my dog out of the bedroom at 6; she usually wakes me at a quarter to 7. THen of course I went back to a nice deep sleep and woke up at 8! So I really need this cuppa before I do much more...
THe guinea that I helped was wide eyed and "nearly" bushy-tailed this morning. I put him with the other one that I found in the chick TV. They also have a duckling for company...it is so very small and cat keep up with the rest of the family so it is in for now. Jim I had planned on taking all but 1 or 2 babies but I cant find the Mom anywhere now...maybe I will spot her today.

I have had only one message from CL about muskovy ducklings and that person wanted to buy adult hens! Her dog eats duck eggs because of allergies or something. Maybe I should lower the price? I am thinking of putting my flock of Toulouse geese on there too. I have had geese for 25 years and I am tired of them...actually as the year gets closer to winter I get tired of a lot of things...I need to buy HAY!!! I usually have my barn full by this time--I have about 25 bales...

Gotta head out and get the birdies out and fed...man I am tired...have a great day! TErri O

I've noticed with interest that there is a lot of interest in peacocks here lately. I've never raised them, but certainly understand why you would want these beautiful birds decorating your yard.
Isn't there a problem for some with noise, though? I have neighbors a mile away and when their peacocks set up a racket..yow!

Here's a sad, but heroic, peacock story: Warning! If you're a sensitive viewer you may want to stop here.
Anyway, my friend who has peacocks, had a peahen sitting on her nest with 8 new babies. During the early part of the evening she heard honking, and at first ignored it until it got louder and more desperate. But, by the time she got to the barn her peahen had all her tail feathers pulled out and all the babies were gone. She doesn't know what sort of critter might have done this, but it had to have been a two-party planned assault. One critter hung onto the mother, who was trying to defend her babies, while the other villain stole them away for a snack, one by one. The poor mom is still sulking in the barn and won't come out. Sad, sad, sad.

Cind - oh chicken math has already kicked in, which is why we are making that shed into a coop. my 6x6 coop I have now will NOT be big enough come winter for the birds that I have. It is fine now, when they only go in at night to roost and get locked up, but winter... I am sure there would be some pecking.

Jim - I heard that it is pretty hard to hatch out peafowl. I did find some eggs on ebay for quite a reasonable price. 45.00 for 8 of them. But I didn't want to buy them because I was afraid they wouldn't hatch. The way it is I can't get my bater up above 30% humidity. I need a better bater if I plan to hatch out peafowl eventually.

I did find a person online - I found the ad on CL (http://northernwi.craigslist.org/grd/2480148779.html) but I can't get his website to work. Located near Campbellsport (Waupon-FonDuLac area) He has India Blue chicks for 25.00 a piece and he does ship 2 day (or at least it would be 2 day to me here by La Crosse). I haven't heard a reply as to how much shipping will be though. here's the website - if any of you can get it to work let me know.... http://www.sunrisehaven.homestead.com/ I just see a white page and it won't load all the way. The guys name is Pat Budde. Can't get it to load for the life of me. If anyone wants his email address PM me and I will pass it on to you.

Maybe if there is enough interest we can have a delivery or peachick chain??? Each person runs a lag of it to deliver the birds to the others across the state??? Would anyone be interested in this??? There is enough of us looking for peafowl that it might be worth it???
whatcha all think???

To - I had a morning like that too. Alarm went off at 5:45 and I hit off instead of snooze... didn't get up til the kids woke me up at 8. OOPS!

Re Southern Bash: My vote remains for Dane Co. I can't travel that far to the other one, sorry.

It's probably time to seriously consider having two smaller southern mini-bashes since there is no consensus on one location. Just saying...

Have a good one, enjoy the cool weather.

Jim,
We do not maintain the birds here in Wisconsin. We also do not have
adult birds for sale, I am sorry, we are a sales office and arrange
the shipment of chicks only from a nationwide network of private
breeders.
Thank you.

good afternoon. I will try again to post what I tried this AM>.

I tried to contact that Budde person yesterday.. Either he does not have the same Email or the one listed is wrong..

Dorne, I hathced peahen eggs this summer.. they did OK.. as long as they are fertile.. The trick is to get them into the incubator within 3 days of being layed..

I do not have access to Ebay.. I wouldn't want shipped eggs anyhow.. especially peahen's. by the time people collect the eggs and add on the shipping time and jostling, I can't believe you would have such a good hatch..

from what I have gathered, peahens are seasonal layers.. April to June.. If you find some on Ebay now, I cannot believe they would be good..

a muscovy mama came out of hiding today with 14 babies in tow. from now on I am going to just let the ducks do their own hatching.. geese too..

I took 8 guineas and one turkey out of the hather today..

I am not going to the southern bash.. but IMHO, why don't a few of you who are close to each other just meet up someplace unofficially ?

Gaelio , how about your neighbor with peafowl ? would they have any to sell?

the noise does not bother me.. I have guineas and geese.. and chickens are not exactly mute, either.. and now that we have the quail right next to the deck, those boys can really crow..
