Tomski..the pullets should lay through the first winter witout additional light. Actually 14 hours of light is the optimal amount. I won't be adding light cuz I plan on having eggs all winter long. Prolly next year the additional light will matter. I always have enough pullets to provide winter eggs. The light seems to add additional stress to the hens. Your call.

By the way DrH Brent will be watching the game with his half a** eye. Last week he was giving me a play by play

I went to the neighbor farmer and bought a 25 lb bag of softball size onions for $13.00 I used so many of our home grown ones that we were afraid we were gonna run out. Good thing we did he was almost sold out and that was only 2 days after we got the corn.

We have tons of apple too! I freeze apple pies instead of the apples. Don't make sauce tho' I've tried for over 30 years and for some stupid reason it never turns out... sigh... so I make 20 to 25 pies. Then when we want one I just pull it out of the freezer put it in another pan doctor it up a bit and bake!

YUP!! I have read all the pages so far and like most don't remember half of what I read... so if I forgot to reply to something..that's why.

I don't know about Annie, but it has been all roses for me..

I have not given up on the peahen.. the neighbor lost one a few years ago and it showed up 3 months later at our house.. I don't know what that one ate,, I hope this one has enough brains to forage..

It would be a hoot if she linked up with a flock of wild turkeys..

speaking of songs.. my favorite song in church was about a bear named Gladly.

Ummm crepes.. Now that is something I haven't made for a long time.. I used to eat them at a local pancake restaurant. then they discontinued my favorite cherry ones.. One day I bought a can of cherries and took it along with me.. They did make me some cherry crepes..

Sis, You can bring Brent to visit any time.. and it is really nice of you to put up with our daily dose of B.S.

we now have 24 new quail in the TV. 16 eggs to go.. better % than last time.. I notice that the "jumbo" eggs have not hatched. yet..

TO you have grape juice,, just put it into a jar, add a little sugar. It should ferment and you would have a nice wine.. If it is not sweet enough to drink, make a little simple syrup and sweeten to taste..

No Cind, I sort of figured you would come on after me.. but from now on, 5 AM is the deadline ,, after that you will be the first post of the day..

You guys cannot cancel the Southern bash.. Deb is all set on going.. Don't try to make it so formal, just get a bunch of you together.. the good times will just naturally unfold..

time to go make some breakfast.. I have crepes on my mind..

The peahen came home.. I was mixing up the crepe batter and looked out the kitchen window.. there she was, with my peacock.. I don't know how thrilled he is to have her tagging along, he will have to get used to it..

Yes, I made blintzes.. cherry, sour cream and cream cheese with a hint of almond extract.. we did not tell Ken that there was any cheese involved.. He always says he won't eat cheese.. but I noticed that he mopped the last bit of juice off his plate with his sausages.. LOL

raining pretty good here.. I told DD#1 to come anyhow.. we can pick corn in the rain..

Tomski.... I've been meaning to reply to your posts but my mind wanders (as you can all probably tell) so I forgot.
Anyway, so sorry to hear of the roo. I have read alot of posts where they think it was a raccoon. They will reach in and grab the chickens an sometimes actually rip the heads off etc to pull them thru.
But you think they were fighting? Wonder if it as a coon ? Or weasel ?
I'll give you another one if you want but at this age I think you might have a problem introducing another roo. I should have given you three !!! lol Just holler when or if you need another Roo.
I still have the 4 young black and lavender orps. Not sure what sex they are. I didn't realize I only got 4 out of the bunch. I lost some as chicks but don't remember now which ones. Must have been the orps.
Anyway, overcast up this way today. I'm not a football fan so I will be cleaning out silkie pens today.
My showgirl is doing about the same. Better then she was. I just read that if it is a Vitamin E deficiency then it will take while to build up the levels.

Oh and happy aniversary Jim and Annie, belated of course cause you never give us a heads up !! Wonder how many years Annie would tell us !!! She has to come to next years bash !!! We need to hear her side of the story !!

Well, my plans for this afternoon got squashed, with this rain/damp/chilly weather, now I'm housebound with nothing but housework to do

it just don't seem right!

Time to break out the knitting needles and get busy I guess, it's looking like my outdoor days are numbered now!
