Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning! Chiiiiiily today! I got goosebumps waiting for the dogs...of course I only had my nightgown on! :p So now all are fed and watered and I am having the second cuppa. AAHHHH! Nice sun coming in the North window here. It is so odd how far the sun "swings" when the winter comes. The light comes from different directions for sure...or maybe it's because the big maple is finally losing it's leaves?
THe quail in the TV are too big...they are bopping up and down and chasing each other. I need to move them downstairs but the ones in that pen are crowded too. Bigger accommodations or "colder" accommodations are in order! With how quickly they grow I guess I'd only need to keep 2 roos and 8 hens over the winter...could build up the flock in no time in spring!

Going to Milwaukee today to get the spuds and have lunch with BFF.
COngrats on the anniversary BigZ and SIS! Kind of an accomplishment in this day and age I think!
Elaine--you cracked me up when you said HEAD CHEESE! Were you here yet when we had the big discussion about it? It is funny if you were and even funnier if you werent! MMMMM-head cheese! (Right CC?)
I havent had any more problems with this site since that weird night. I think I am going to go and read on the info thread and see if I can find out what was happening...and the fix!

Well--I suppose I better get ready to get outside so I can road trip...have a great day everyone! Terri O

Work at 11am. During the next 2 hours I will be going to the feed bin, getting some scratch for the kids to make those hanging pine cone bird feeders, grabbing some suet and some cabbage. One way or another I am going to get those birds to stop eating feathers.

I am going to cook up pumpkin tonight as well. I have 7 pie pumpkins that I got for about a dollar a piece and will be going through them and getting them ready for pies. I am going to give church members pie for thanksgiving to let them know they are loved.

The good news is today is a beautiful day with lots to do. I may take one of my kids with me for the morning chores then drop them off before work. My wife is homeschooling right now and enjoys sleeping in, so I get the kids moving in the morning.

Hope you have a productive day!!!

KEN

Congrats, Bigz & SIS! I thought that was your age.

The coyotes around here start howling if an emergency vehicle goes by with its siren on.

I hope your guinea shows up, Cind.
Awww, Jim, I was just yanking your chain.

I didn't mean to aggravate. Just ignore me, please.

(I know your dial-up annoys you also, but please don't stop posting). I leave a light on in my coop 24/7 also. In the winter, it is a red heat bulb. When it is warmer, I have a red 25 watt bulb going. (The red bulbs are supposed to be less likely to cause problem behavior, or so I've read).

DrH, you just be careful out in them woods.

Hope you have a safe trip, TO. I'll be waving as you go by. Mmmmm, head cheese is yummy, if it's made right.

Yes, I believe I was the only person on here that admitted that I liked head cheese, and got lots of flak for it. All in good fun!

Boy, I wonder how many pages back that conversation was?

I hope your roo recovers quickly, Tiki. I have thankfully never had to deal with that problem, but I was trying to find info on it for someone else a while back. I don't know about holding the bird upside down & "rinsing" him, personally, but I thought I'd pass it on so you'd have options on what would work best for you. Here is another option:
Dawg53 told me: (and he is a wealth of chicken knowledge)
For sour crop you can give vegetable oil from an eyedropper and massage the crop gently downward. Do this for 4-5 times a day for about 10 days. You can put a small drop of honey into the dropper with warm water as well, it'll help loosen what is in the crop....keep up with the the oil and massage. (This is what I have read, never had that problem personally).
So glad the sun is out today! Looks like it is going to be a beaut. I hope everyone gets to enjoy it.

Head ache

Thank you CC. Yes I know dawg 53 and I listen to his wise words. The buddy boy is still alive today and kicking.

good morning,, DrH, I know the dooda joke is very old.. I first heard it somewhere in the late 1960's but a lot of young folks have never heard it,, nor the camptown races song.. try telling it to some youngsters. they will stare at you like deer in the headlights..

Annie and Ken went to town for b'fast..asked if I wanted to go along.. Nope.. she p'd me off last night so I am in a not so good mood.. besides I have lots to do around here today.. snow coming and I am not ready..

I turned 3 young turkeys and the baby peacock loose this morning.. It is funny to watch them their first time in the BIG world around them.. they will be over it by tonight.. I have 5 youger turkeys that I thin I will move into the pens inside the chicken coop..In about a month they can be turned loose also..
I turn them loose after 13 weeks old.

I have never had a chicken with impacted crop.. I have had them with very tight crops, but none have ever died from it.
I think somebody mentioned blocked gizzard ? How the h3II can you tell? You have to be careful about your diagnosis.. you could be doing more harm than good..
I could go on a tiraid about this, but will just leave it go at that..

DrH,, do you have a drawbar on the Ford? next time use a clevis and a chain and raise the front of the log off the ground if you can.. that will transfer a lot of weight to the back tires..
You prolly know and tried that already.. You prolly know what the farmers used to say about the little fords.. they are good for hauling drinking water out to fields where the real tractors are working.. If the VAC can pull it, the ford should be able to also.. I think you are just making excuses to keep two tractors.

later,,,,,,,,,jiminwisc.........

Tiki, I probably should just PM you about this but, the silkie mix I got from you is getting gold lacing on his hackle feathers. Do you know what colors of silkies and cochins you had in the pen you got his egg from? This picture isn't the best at showing it, he didn't want to stay still.

My son and I have been under the weather so I haven't been in the mood to chat much. Still reading every day, though.

Hey, do Bantum hens need more heat than regular sized hens? I lost one of my bantum silkie hens last night and found her stiffer than a board in the coop this morning.

I noticed she wasn't on the perch last night but I thought she just hadn't made it up there yet. She must not have been feeling well.... Sad as she's one that I hatched this Spring and her little sister is going to miss her. They were really cute watching them running around together. And neither one of them hesitated to peck at the dog or the ducks (both which are like 10 times bigger than them!) if they felt they were getting too close. I'm just wondering if the surviving girl will need more heat as I didn't heat the coop last winter and wasn't planning to this year...

Well, that's all for now.

Stay well & warm!
Elaine

Oh... So sorry about your hen, Elaine.

Do you have some bigger standards in the coop to keep them warm? I let mine mix together and the little ones sleep under the big ones, but if all you have are bantams I'd consider giving them a heat lamp for the winter... little chickens can be very delicate.

Well, early though it be, I'm thinking about asking for a new incubator for Christmas. Ha!

WOW this could be a black silkie X D Uccle!!! It must be a silkie X DUccle mix, because there would be no gold going on otherwise. . If you ever want to get rid of him I will buy him back. But no worries if you want to keep him too. He is a cutey. I haev some female D Uccle mixes and you could get one of those too for another option, but they have been outside with the big chickens. Just so you know you would have to quarentine.

Awe Sorry about youre little silkie Elaine

She sounds like she was very special to you and I am sure her sister will miss her.. I hope you and your son feel better soon.

As far as the sour crop I wormed my chickens twice within the last month~month and a half. Then decided to treat for cocci just to be safe. I now believe, after doing some research that this may have caused the problem. I know too a wrong diagnosis and teatment can do more harm. than good. I have been researching and thanks to you folks too I got a few leads.

This is what I have done now. I am giving everybody 3 tbps of Mother ACV/gallon of water. Also, I mix fresh minced ginger with minced garlic and dissolved in buttermilk, let sit a while and sprinkle heavily with probiotics and then mix with everyone's feed. With the sick roo, I have done the same. But in addition am giving him a 400iu dose of vitamin E a day and have been massaging his crop. I am making him eggs and adding ginger and garlivc to them. Also, giving him a drop of gentian violet a day, which is probably not doing anything but was a possible remedy. I hope this works. And I hope the diagnosis was correct, but I dont think what I am doing at this point can actually hurt a chicken. I will report back later about the roo. Thanks so much everyone.

I was quite crabby today
