Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good evening Kris--great coop pics! Your coop looks "very rustic" I LOVE it! Kinda reminds me of my HOUSE!
lau.gif

So today Al (92) was Mr Crabby! OMG--he wouldnt eat...I made him a lovely plate of MY eggs and he didnt touch them! Then he apologized that he was so crabby...poor guy! My lady was in a good mood though. It is weird, they are never the same in the same day.
My dogs are driving me up the wall! Two go out and the rest dont, then one barks to go out and when he comes in the other one rings the bell to go out!!! AAARRRGH!
he.gif
THey cant all seem to go out at the same time. They will just stand there and look at me...

I will go and check out your store too Amy. I just cant believe that you have NO TIME for reading the Cheese board! (makes me sad!) I cant wait to see what everyone is up to...maybe you have friends "in person" though; mine are all far away. And yes we WILL have a bash! My how rumor does fly! I didnt want to really start planning it until January cause it just takes soooo long to get here if we start early. Brent I will PM you about using your camp again if it is available...We will have to secure plans for cleaning the camp when the bash is done though...there is way too much to do for just a couple of people! If we all can agree on that then maybe we will be welcome to use that fantastic place again!

I know that I have white elephants accumulated from the last 2 bashes to trade!

My DD19 just called and thinks she is developing an egg allergy!
th.gif
Has anyone ever heard of that happening so late? I thought it was mostly little kids that had that...Hmmm.
Well DH just walked in--imagine he wants some dinner...which I have not started...later! Terri O

One more thing (he's not too hungry yet) I read that article MLH and it is so funny cause it's nearly totally contradictory to what my vet says! (I never did believe him) He claims that the poison is already metabolized by the mouse/rat BEFORE the dog or cat gets to it so it is rendered harmless to the eater of a poisoned rodent. NOw this was for the Warfarin based poison not the other ones. I think many of the rodents are getting immune to this poison. I have much better luck with the stronger Jaguar...I do worry about secondary poisoning though! The good thing is that it controls right away and the tipsy animal isnt wondering around "waiting" to be killed and eaten my my guineas or dogs!

Gee...I just had an idea...what if that owl......T

went to F&F today.. heat tape is expen$ive !! $.55/ft.. 60 feet minimum.. have to check on craigs list..

I checked on Ohm meters.. they have one for less than $10.oo..

I have to get my brother back out here with his to check out my electric hose.. maybe it is repairable..

TerriO, good luck getting that owl to eat your dead rats..

to teach the dog to go out , whether he wants to or not, go after him with a broom.. You don't have to hit him,, just sweep him and irritate him with it.. after one or two sessions, all you have to say is "broom" and he will beat you to the door.. after awhile all you have to do is open the door and say "out"..

and I never let the dog in immediately if he barks.. he has learned to bark and wait a few minutes.. I am not his slave..

Barking is good for a dog, exercises their lungs and vocal cords. Though from the looks of your dog Jim, I don't think he needs the broom as he seems to be a pretty smart pooch. Teach him to follow your finger when you point to the door, he will learn soon enough and use the broom as backup

Awwwwww, FT, that niece's baby of yours is just precious!
And Jim, glad you weren't my dad. Oh wait..........my dad was a comedian just like you. No wonder I didn't have children...........

I know just how you feel! I'm in the same predicament. No help & no energy.

That would be 6 cats, Bigz! We're one up on ya, at least for now, anyways. This is the least we've had for a long time.
roll.png
That's why we usually get the big bags, but for some reason, I thought you had 3 cats. I must have you confused with someone else on here. At least it's not TO (10)!
lol.png
Thank you on the info about the ham soup base! And here we thought my soup was pretty tasty.
lau.gif
But there is always room for improvement, right? I think so! With age comes wisdom, I believe. Man, I'm getting old...........er.
wink.png
Next summer, we are definitely stopping in Shawano for a pit stop. And we are definitely having a summer bash, aren't we, Bigz??????????????? We will for sure pitch in with $$$$$$$$$ and help the next day, if you need it. NOT a problem! It sure was cripple-friendly, thank goodness!

See?????????????????

Hmmmm............ FT, if I didn't dislike snow so much, I'd definitely think about getting that 40 acres up by you. We'd have such a blast!
wink.png
Oh, the shopping we could do! And the animals we'd have..........
hide.gif
We'd eat good too! I love to cook, especially soup!
hugs.gif

Amy!!!!!!!!!! Glad to hear from you!
hugs.gif
Please say hi to Shanti for me if she doesn't see this!

Tiki, I like your snowy pic too. Very nice looking coop! I hope you're feeling better soon too! And where was that old house that you took pics of? I showed DH & he loved it too, but later asked, "you were kidding, right?"
lau.gif

I know what you mean about all your friends being so far away, TO. And DH, (my DH, not DrH) really wants to get together with you & your DH again sometime soon. BTW, I developed food allergies late in life too. Sorry!
hide.gif

Well, I wanted to get alot done today, but............ more to do than hours in a day, unfortunately. I got the bed stripped & washed & redone. And some stuff dusted. If you only knew how much crap I had, you'd be impressed......

thanks for the compliments on the coop and pics TO and CC. Thats my dream home (a *rustic* little house)
big_smile.png
I think it is pretty awesome that your dog rings a bell to go out TO. CC thats a lot of cats! (you too Bigz) keeps you busy cleaning boxes I bet. DS30 and DIL have 4 cats and 5 boxes. Constantly cleaning up hair bunnies.

Congrats on your first BLUE egg cindlady

I was at F@F today but even with my reading glasses I couldnt read the fine print on those labels. There are a bunch of different kinds of poison there. I noticed one that said even kills rats resistant to #something or other% A next time I guess.

jim good luck with the heat tape project. sounds frustrating. How is Annie?

jim you were right about watching out about diagnosing my own birds and jumping to conclusions. (this was a while back) Of course you knew that all along.
tongue.png
Talked to the state vet today and pretty certain of the problem as I posted it. Not at all what I thought, and a fairly simple thing and easy to fix. I suck. Feel like bad chicken mom now.
hide.gif
Good news is I can fix the problem for future health.

CC you crack me up!

Have a good night everybody

FT- COngrats to the family and You on your niece!!

WHile I can't see pics, I am sure the coop and the chickens are wonderful!!

So where does BYC have a cheese thread.. or did you mean this one TO?? or am I just dense.. LOL

I have been running ALL over south and western WI lately... my main areas are Verona, Janesville and Beloit. But today alone I was up in Richland center, and La Valle, then Madison.

While up in RC today, I picked up a pelleted feed for the chickens... is anyone familiar with the information that if you give chickens, corn/scratch feeds, BOSS and simple F&F crumble you can make your chickens too fat, and have too much "stored" energy, and it can create a bulge of fat near the vent and prevent egg laying...
Or was the guy at the feed store blowing smoke??

Take care all!!

Holy Smokes !!! It's 2am !!! Where did the day go???? I went to Elcho to pick up Chucks check then went to Antigo to deposit it !!! Made it to late to the bank !!!!!
barnie.gif
Guess my day didn't start till afternoon
hide.gif
He had cashed it in Elcho but I needed to get it to our bank. Plus I needed dog food, parrot food, pig food and to return the medicated pig food the Oshkosh FF sold me !!!!
I'm Pooped !!!

Went to the Purina Country store where I get the parrot food, they still haven't gotten in any Medium or Large parrot food. They only charge (yeah right only) $35 for 20 lbs. Foster & Smith charges $50 !!!! I remember being able to get 20 lbs for $20 !!!! Wow prices keep going up and up and salaries down and down !!! No wonder this country is going broke !!

You all won't believe what they had at the Country store !!!! In a little pen by the register was an adorable little piglet in a cage. I asked if he was for sale, nope, he was the clerks. His name is Wilbur and he is a Micro or Teacup Pig. Not a miniature. He will only get to be 9 or 10 lbs.
She got him from Milw area and paid, get this, $800 and that was a good deal. She said she was looking at some that were $2300 !!!!!! WOW.

When I went to FF to return the medicated pig food I had a nice talk with the clerk there. Betcha she thinks I'm nuts !! Told her about my showgirl house chicken !!!! Told her not to tell to many of the other workers that I'm this crazy !!! LOL Told her about this site, we'll see if she checks it out, she thought a house chicken was interesting.

Was going to go to Wally world and look for the ham soup base but didn't have the energy. Then I saw Copps had Ham for $.99 with a $25 purchase (poor pigs) but I was to pooped to shop any more !!

Oh I know why I was running late today, on top of reading BYC for who knows how long. I watched a movie. You all should check it out if you haven't already. It's called "Temple Grandin". It is a movie about the real Temple Gradin an Autistic woman who has written several books, "Animals make us Human" and a few others.
It really is a good movie. I have a special interest in her since my nieces husband knows her personally and is working with her. He is a professor at River Falls in Animal Behavior. She works with slaughter houses to make it more humane for the animals.
Anyway I checked it out from the libray (the dvd). It was a HBO film made in 2010. Gonna watch it again before I bring it back. What an inspiration she is.

Jim, well you started it !!! I fired up my incubator tonight. I put in 8 runner duck eggs that I got from the person I got the pig from and I think 7 or 8 paint/black silkie eggs. Tomorrow I'll fetch some lavender cross eggs.
Then head to the feed store for chicken feed. I should have just waited and gone to Antigo tomorrow but ??????

Ok now that I've rambled I don't remember a thing I was going to say !!! So it is agreed, their will be a NE Bash !!!! We'll all chip in !!!! Time for some tylenol, my shoulders hurt from pitching hay to the horses !!! OUCH !

"....Nature is cruel but we dont have to be." Temple Grandin

Hi All!

People seemed be be on the quiet side today. Guess everyone was busy or frozen! LOL
tiki... cool coop! Gave me an idea to get some more small spaces in my coop.
roll.png
Go up!
ya.gif
OK, now just need the time and maybe a little help
hmm.png

As you may recall, I have "Roadrunner" in a pen by herself because of her limping. She slowly seems to be improving. Today I left her door open to see if she wanted to come out for a bit. I went to the big coop to feed and water and while I was busy in there the door between the areas blew open.
barnie.gif
3 of the roosters and a few hens went to visit.... poor girl... the roosters were right on her! She "ran" to the big coop where 4 more rosters were! I managed to keep kicking them off her and she ran right back to her little cage! I don't think she'll want out for a while.
sad.png
She's been laying weird too. Didn't lay for 2 days the today I got 2 eggs. I went back to the coop to get some of the dishes to clean about 11 and and there was a 3rd egg! The shell on that one was real thin and it broke. I wonder if her earlier trauma made her lay it too soon.
hu.gif

I also wound up bringing "tiny" in. When I went to close up she was hunkered down in a nest and didn't even come out for the nightly treat. The roosters have been hard on her too. Brought her in for a few days rest. I think after X-mass I'm going to have to push my boys to send 4 of the roosters to freezer camp! If I had the room I would separate them for awhile and fatten 'em up first! That Cochin Roo is still up for grabs if anyone is interested... otherwise, freezer camp! Since I know now that the neighbors are ok with roos I only plan on keeping 2. The pullets are laying fairly good now too.

OK.... going to try to sleep! Night/morning all!

good morning, I stepped over the traces today and answered a question on the incubation thread.. now we sit back and wait for the experts to chime in.. they never are the first to respond, they always wait until somebody replies, and then they rebuke..

Carol, why would he specifically pick out F&F granuals as the culprit ? It seems that any combination of what was listed could cause fat..
I find it hard to believe that fat could prevent an egg from being laid.. that would mean that all the formed eggs would be backed up inside the hen.. have you ever seen that happen?? I haven't..
I can believe that a non-laying hen can become fat..
that is a typical case of coming up with the wrong conclusion with what evidence is shown.. that sort of thing happens on BYC all the time..

Sandi, sounds like you had a nice busy well planned day..

Tike, Annie is still hacking.. I am trying to come up with a new angle on the heat tape project.. It not only has to work, it has to be cheap $$$$..

I have to transfer the goose eggs back to bator #1.. #3 has suddenly dropped to 97F for no apparent reason.. No big deal, just not what I had in mind..
