Tiki... you were mentioning a book that helped you know more about living off the land... there is a book my mother in law got for me... I know i saw it at one of the shows at the Aliant Energy center like the plant show or home improvement, but bet you could find on internet.

It is called : Country Wisdom and KNow-How, everything you need to know to live off the land.... it is not all inclusive, but some great ideas in it. It is oversized book and looks like brown package paper for the cover. Love it!

Glad to see some more posts this morning !!! I was starting to wonder where you all were (especially you Jim)
I have to agree with you on the All Saints !!! There are good and bad in everyone. I've heard some terrible stories too. But try not to take it out on all of them.

Wouldn't you know the sun is shining here today. I think first time in ???????? and I have tons of laundry to do and inside stuff before I leave for my mini Christmas/doctor appt getaway !!!

Yep it almost killed me the last few days not going to any stores !!! Like my little old Aunt says "It's my social Life" Did I already say that last night ????

My sister is mean !!! Every year she mails OM (DH) a tin of cookies (this year was plastic)

and writes "Chucks Cookies" on it. Well he eats so many then shares with me. She emailed me and said " The cookies ARE for Chuck" !!

To late, we ate them all last night. Pecan dreams, thumbprint and cut outs !! The Danish blood in me can't control myself around sweets. Never used to be like this but these days I Live for sweets

I know I know not good but hey it's my only vice besides ........................................ well let's just say it is one of them !!

Gotta go get a blood test today so in to town. Then hit the Grocery store for ????? It's Wednesday and they give a product to the seniors. Could be a jar of Jelly or ???? Plus they have a $.50 item all week.

Then I have to stop at the neighbors and get a bottle of ho-made syrup for my white elephant gift. Actually I should get two bottles if I want to give a gift from OM (DH)

Ok, gotta finish up my coffee and read up a bit. Still haven't looked at those links but I plan to.

Oh Jim,
I've been meaning to ask. That ohm meter you were telling me about. What actually does it say on the package? I was looking at them at Wally World but wasn't quite sure what to get.
Did you see the link I posted a few days ago on heated perches where you put heated pipe tape on the perches the cover with carpet.

Here it is again in case you missed it. Hopefully my brother will be done making covers for my Hog pans that I plan on making water warming pans out of. You know the cookie tin idea but made with the hog pan, which is the exact same pan they use in the ones sold in the store for $50 or more. He is a sheet metal guy. I told him I need them like yesterday but ?????? Will get them on Christmas. That reminds me I'm going to call him and remind him !!! You know big sisters chickens really aren't a priority.

Like many who are doing the carbon foot print, I tend to take that foot print a bit more and try (futile) to save a beautiful creature. Hence I just refuse to use a product that is being collected by destroying creatures needlessly.

As to my home...I am getting there. I have a LONG way to go, but during the winter months I research and the warm months I put to use what I researched. I'm not one to carry a title, so I'm not a herbalist, though I practice herbalism. The Lord gave us herbs (weeds) and these herbs were used from the dawn of time, so why not use them now and save a trip to the doctor? I'm in the process of making udder balm without aloe and lanolin and it's to be used on everything from Chickens to cattle to humans. Like my soaps, I target farm folks, hobbyists and those who work with dirt (or poop lol).

I was thinking overnight that most, if not all, people on the cheesethread are very very busy in the summer and garden and can and get their own meat, etc. And choose to what degree they are comfortable with.


Tatters I will check out the magazine links. I really like GRIT,,,,I have about 30 of the first issues of Mother Earth News and they were the bomb in the day. Now it is too much advertising.

I have a friend in, or close to Arkansaw who makes soap with lye. I want to learn how to make it from her. Or buy it from her at least if I cant make it. I certainly want lemon grass in it. I think I better order some lemon grass seeds from my sister.

All soap is made with lye. I love making lye in the winter tyme (intentionally spelled wrong for you imperfect spellers) and you cannot make soap without it. The problem is that lye is expensive $9.50 for 2 lbs and its not available all the time as the bio diesel plants are using lye like mad and its depleting the stock of it. At one time, lye was available at hardware stores as a drain cleaner, but not anymore.
