Happy New Year!

Believe it or not, I went out to water my chickens and Bert (the big Americauna Rooster I got from FT) FINALLY STARTED CROWING!

I was beginning to worry about him. He is a BIG rooster, friendly - a little too friendly - and I thought being in an area full of "girls" he may never know he was a Rooster.... However, now that he has found his voice, he hasn't stopped showing off. He is walking back and forth on the top roost in the pen and the hens are running around like they are not sure what all this noise is about... It's pretty funny. I actually hung out in the coop for a full cup of coffee this morning just kinda chuckling - AND being proud that my big boy finally realizes that he's a boy! LOL

On another note, I have a beautiful Lavender Orp hen that was hatched in March. I DID have 5, but between the dog and the other hens picking on her, I'm down to just this one. She is laying just about every other day now. I'm willing to trade her for a couple of full sized Americauna's, or any other "Bigger" type Hens that are already laying. I'd need to get at least two because I don't think introducing just one into the flock will work. Hell, two may not work - but I'm willing to try. I've got four black sex links and 5 brown sex links right now.

FT I was actually thinking about you since you gifted me with the Roosters in the first place and I know you wanted to start breeding Lavendar Orpingtons... So I guess you get first shot. LOL If you don't think it's worth the two for one deal... Let me know... OR if you have a couple more hens... I'll take as many as four

Getting our first good snow today. I guess I'm gonna have to go out and get the plow put on the ATV. This snow will also be a good test to see if the roof I put on the outside Chicken run is on enough of an angle to "slide" the snow down -or- if I'm gonna have to be out there Shoveling the roof..

Oh BTW - I do "troll" this forum just about EVERY DAY... So it seems like I know you guys pretty good!

Made it home before the weather hit. We have about an inch of snow/ice all over the place, at least when it is crusty like this the snow can't blow and drift everywhere.

Had prime rib last night.... oh so yummy! Still felling a bit under the weather, but nothing like I was...... perhaps the 2 Tom and Jerry's I had last night did the trick.

DH woke up this morning for a second to tell me he had a tension headache... I told him it was a too much beer headache, he responds back with "No, not that."

Right....... he only helped drink 4 pitchers plus whatever he had with dinner....

Boiling up a chicken; it's a homemade chicken and dumplings kind of day. Maybe that will help all the sickies get better.

Happy New Years morning, all! Boy, you sure were the night owls. DH & I were asleep before midnight.

Not the nicest day out there. We got about a half inch of wet snow down here, and it's extremely windy and overcast. DH cleaned off our sidewalk & driveway already, before the winds picked up, luckily.

Your DH sounds like he's in the same mood my DH was in yesterday, TO. What a grump.

Tomski, be happy your roo is friendly.

BBP, I am so sorry to have wasted your time. I can't afford $60 for 4 straight run chicks, esp. if they wind up being mostly roos. DH would shoot me.

I'm glad to hear everyone made it home safe and hope whoever it applies to feels better soon! Go Pack! Enjoy the game, TO!

I went out (late) to let the chickens out, and the bird netting over the run is down thanks to the wet snow!! Argh! (aprox 30 x 25 run). So trying to figure out if I want to get the ladder out in the snow and tack it back up in the places it came down, or if this will just end up being a pattern for the next couple months.

My fence around it is only 4.5-5 ft tall so nervous 1) about at least my banty flying out although she rarely flies. And 2) hawks eagles flying over and easily spotting them on the white, and 3) our hunting dog getting them if they happen to fly out.

So I either need to take it down completely or try balancing on a ladder on snow and uneven ground and tacking it back up

Angie, I wouldn't try messing with a ladder on the snow. You don't want to hurt yourself. As for the run, do your chickens go out much with the snow on the ground? My chickens don't care for walking on it, so having an uncovered run in the wintertime, IMO, isn't as critical. My run isn't covered, I have hawks around, and so far, I haven't had any escapees, yet.

So I vote for staying safe & keep off the ladder.

In my run, I have an old deer feeder, a pallet & some pieces of plywood leaning against walls & stumps so the chickens have some cover, along with some thick bushes. It isn't the prettiest, but as long as they have something to hide under, they should be ok from certain preds.

Happy New Year to u all! 2012 wow! so is it twenty-twelve or 2 thousand twelve? lol glad I'm feeling better, I've been sick since Tuesday (the achy, coughy, congested & weak crap) so what's your vote? whick would you rather be?, puking for 24 hours or achy, coughy, congested & weak for dang near a week? I don't care what it is, for 24 hours I can handle it. It's when I'm sick for 5 days and no one does ANYTHING around here and when I finally do get better I got a TON of sh!t to clean up, I mean come on when everyone else is sick I have to do EVERYTHING AND "baby" them? what gives? I really think I got the short end of the stick. lol any one up for some cleaning?

Oh I got an idea for a new shirt yesterday it's, Is this year over with yet? lol I was hoping today would bring better health lol I woke up with a headache (i only had 2 drinks last night) it's from all this coughing.

Windy Packer Sunday To All... Glad everyone made it home safely.

Kinda cool that Matt Flynn gets the starting nod today. He's a good QB and will prolly end up on a different team next year due to being a free agent. I know he wants to be a starter somewhere.

game is about to start.. I know I had some comments. but I cant type or think under duress..

egg production is gradually going up since I started keeping the coop buttoned up.. I still have a few turkeys and guineas to weed out of the chicken coop..

I am trying to buy a peahen from someone in Merrill.. she said I was the first to contact her,, FT was prolly the 2nd .. I just don't feel like spending $75.oo on one right now..

we got about 4 inches of new snow last night.. I am not plowing until after the game..

TerriO, get the meat into the oven and sit down and enjoy the game with your friends,.

that lone gosling is such a pet.. he sits on my shoulder and nibbles my hair and ear.. I hope he gets some company soon..

Now I just need to decide what two hens to give up !! I"m known as the Rooster Rescue you know !!! Short on Hens but I will look them all over.

The day we brought the chocolate lab home from being spayed she managed to get herself a nice black Ameraucana hen and ate half of it !!! Have no idea how that happened unless the hen didn't go in the coop the night before, guess it happened the next morning when OM let her out !!! D@mn dog !!! She is way to hyper for me !!!

Ya Jim, I saw the peahen on CL. First thing I thought was that is priced way to high and was going to email it to you but since it was on Wausau's CL I'm sure you saw it. I knew you would call for it !!!
When I got home from my Christmas road trip OM DH told me he found one of my black shoulder hens dead. I only paid $40 for her but now that makes the survivor and $80 bird
As soon as they start lying I will be incubating. Gotta get my moneys worth. OM is going to pull out her liver for me to see if it has any spots which would indicate blackhead. I suppose we could look in the intestines for worms too. I dewormed them after I brought them home though.

TO I sure wish I had your energy !! I get tired just listening to everything you do !!! You, CC and I have alot in common with the grumpy husbands. Let's call it the

I got a whole 4 eggs this morning but I turned off the lights a little early yesterday. It's been horribly windy and cold with general yucky junk weather here. The coop is nice an toasty though so the Girls are happy at least!

I spent the first morning of the new year cleaning up after a sick pooch. I think someone got into something they shouldn't have! Ah well, I just hope this is does not indicate what type of year I'll have!!

Dh and I went to Fuji Steak House for lunch and it was gooood! It was my birthday meal to make up for my real birthday meal that turned out pathetically! Now we are home wit hno plans to go out on this chilly day.

Well, I'm going to go take down the Christmas Tree and decorations!
