Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

WOO HOOO Things changed we're goin to Neilsville! Thanks Bigz it's nice to know there's a shoulder to lean on! Now I'm having bad thoughts. My original plan was to hatch out some Peaches babies but now..... A guy at work told me he has a huge run area [heavy fence] plus feeders and waterers that I can have. If my twisted little brain would stop I wouldn't have thoughts of another coop with Silver Laced Wyandottes or such dancing through it. Gotta go look at breeds again! For the hundreth or so time since these stupid birds came into my life.

When is Neilsville swap I went some years back and it was bigger than I expected.

Fordmommy hunter safety online. The guys told me they thought you can get it on CD Rom from scheels or gander mountain for free at least they use to carry it. If that doesn't work call the dnr in Green Bay or Oshkosh and they can help with signup. The hardest thing with taking it online is finding the field day. A field day is a requirment and is just a day where you physically have to show up and go threw like stations. Hope this helps. Mike

Good morning to everyone! I couldn't sleep this morning, thinking about chickens. Even had a dream about em. I laid there thinking about how if I got some chicks they could go up north with us. The Jeep has a 12 volt outlet in it and I could put the heating pad under the portapuss to get us there and to keep it warm underneath on the cold camper floor plus take the heat lamp. PLEASE make it stop! I fell in love with the SLW's and the GLW's the first time I saw them. I have room in the current coop for 6-8 more birds but don't know if the kids would get along with the new arrivials. But that can be delt with. A new coop is out of the question right now. Guess if I find some chicks/eggs I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. Bab Bad naughty chickens!

Thanks Paula, guess I won't be making the trip to Neilsville. We have county wide 4-h basketball at Shiocton this weekend starting friday evening. WOW is it blustery out today guess I got spoiled with the weather the last while. I'm starting to have chicks coming out my ears it's like a full time job in the morn and evening.

Anyone been brave enough to try tilling the garden yet? My dad tilled the other day just to break up the ground. I thought he's nuts. lol Mike

I dug for about 5 minutes and said forget it! Too wet and heavy. But I'm pulling some sod out of the garden and that hasn't been too bad because the soil isn't dried out.
Boy is today windy! Will try to brave it for a while so I can tinker on my coop

And just 15 minutes ago I saw what must be a mink stroll through the backyard by the stream, not 60' from the house

Yikes!!! Too big to be a weasel; he had rich red-brown fur and a bushy blackish tail; close to 18" long. Glad he's out of the yard now. We live in the middle of farmland-central, what's he doing here anyway?

Well if you're in Columbia county or some of the neighboring ones there used to be a lot of mink farms all through there. Many of the minks escaped were left abandonded, let into the wild, or somehow made their way into the wild to bolster the native population...so there's a good mink population in that part of the state.

Winter has returned. Today was "bring all the chicks to school to have grubby little fourth and fifth graders pawing at them" Day, so I had to bundle the brooder up and take it to school with two very excited girls. All of the children behaved themselves except for one little burgeoning juvenile delinquent who wanted to toss a chick into the air to see if it would fly. I leaned over to him and said in his ear, " if you toss the chick I will toss you", patted him on the head while I stared right into his eyes. He decided to forgo that. I'm so impressed with our youngest daughter. She just rolls up her sleeves and handles them like she's a pro. Such a hard worker and doesn't think twice about getting dirty.

Hmm, that could very well be. We live in S. Brown, there is a mink farm down the road from the dairy where we get our milk (near Chilton.) Super.
