I dug for about 5 minutes and said forget it! Too wet and heavy. But I'm pulling some sod out of the garden and that hasn't been too bad because the soil isn't dried out.
Boy is today
windy! Will try to brave it for a while so I can tinker on my coop
And just 15 minutes ago I saw what must be a
mink stroll through the backyard by the stream, not 60' from the house
Yikes!!! Too big to be a weasel; he had rich red-brown fur and a bushy blackish tail; close to 18" long. Glad he's out of the yard now. We live in the middle of farmland-central, what's he doing here anyway?
Well if you're in Columbia county or some of the neighboring ones there used to be a lot of mink farms all through there. Many of the minks escaped were left abandonded, let into the wild, or somehow made their way into the wild to bolster the native population...so there's a good mink population in that part of the state.
Winter has returned. Today was "bring all the chicks to school to have grubby little fourth and fifth graders pawing at them" Day, so I had to bundle the brooder up and take it to school with two very excited girls. All of the children behaved themselves except for one little burgeoning juvenile delinquent who wanted to toss a chick into the air to see if it would fly. I leaned over to him and said in his ear, " if you toss the chick I will toss you", patted him on the head while I stared right into his eyes. He decided to forgo that. I'm so impressed with our youngest daughter. She just rolls up her sleeves and handles them like she's a pro. Such a hard worker and doesn't think twice about getting dirty.
