Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have just a few words about hatching roos vs pullets.. I have heard that theory about the temp a long time ago.. I have heard that pointy ended eggs produce roos and more rounded pointy ends produce pullets.. don't bet the farm on it..

first of all. most of you are using LG or Hova or some other low end incubator.. nothing wrong with that.. but just by listening to many of you, just keeping a steady temp is a challenge. tell me, how are you going to control a +/- .5F.?

If the temp thing were true, do you not think the huge hatcheries would have that perfected by now? there is a reason that they hire people to sort the roos from the pullets..

( my thoughts exactly Jim) FT

my humble advice, shoot for perfect hatches and sort the results when the time comes.

BTW.. extra roos taste great !! and so do PB pigs..

Nora is outside doing her job; barking at her echo..
Yep, they like to do that !! LOL (FT)

I have to figure what I am going to do with all the turkey eggs... I think I have 6 hens.. 4 of them are laying already.. last year I could hardly get rid of a dozen young poults.. what will I do with four times that many?
Maybe eat them? (FT)
I had a call from Marlene (the guinea lady) her guineas are laying already , too.. must be this mild winter.. my guineas are outside most of the time,, so they should not start for awhile..

I would like to make a nice outdoor yard for the quail.. or maybe I will just use one of the breeder pens after I am finished with the chicken sorting..

I had a lady email me about Delawares. she wanted to know if I would replace them if any died for odd reasons. what the heII is an "odd" reason,, and just exactly how long after she gets them is the warranty supposed to be good for ? doesn't anybody want to accept responsibility anymore? I did not answer the email yet.. I will word it a bit more diplomatically..
Just shaking my head !! FT
Nice John Deere.. when he is 12, you real tractor will have real tractor to get him a real tractor bigger one, you know..

When did you start to stutter Jim ? (FT)

hey Terri, nice blue Am's. Don't know how old yours are, but I just got my third egg from blue Am girls that are 26 weeks old. Still not-very-patiently waiting for an olive egg from either of my two OE's............

My flock was laying like gangbusters for most of Jan, after I put a light on them. Now they have slacked off a bit. I blame it on the 3 broodies. And the fact that I tossed in 7 new pullets earlier this month. Touch touchy!

I have to agree with Jim and BL4 on the incubator issue. If temp could determine sex, then all the chick sexers would be out of a job. That didn't sound so great, did it??

I can't remember what she said but when I got the eggs the pictures that she had online were definately lavenders. When I pm'd her about the colors she said that the pictured birds were the parents but she got results like I did so got rid of the birds. I can't remember the exact details now.
It's hard to say what happened. I believe by the pictures that some of the birds were lavenders but ????? I don't remember what I read about breeding lavenders with blues now. Brain fog but that is why when you are breeding for lavender you only breed lavender to lavender or lavender to black. Throwing in any other color will just confuse things.

And yes, Jim, I did already think that the hatcheries would have been all over that temp. thing. Maybe they are & just aren't telling anyone?

We're all just shooting opinions & ideas around. That's what this place is for. I do remember asking you personally for your opinion since you are our resident hatching, hmmmm, expert? Guru? I almost fear the repercussions if I dared to say god.

How about our anchor? You keep us tethered when we start to get offtrack?

Ahhh, I must be overtired.

Tell the lady if she wants a warranty, order from a hatchery.

As for the turkey eggs, I agree with FT. Eat them or sell them?

if the hatcheries are doing it, and keeping it a secret, then they must have just started it, because I just saw a 2011 documentary about hatcheries and they still had human chicken sorters..

we are eating the turkey eggs,, but we are getting 3 to 4 each day.. and if Sandi meant to eat the turkeys she was (A). getting back at me for saying PB pigs were good to eat.. or, (see (A) )

royal palms are not a large dressed out bird. If you get a 7 pound hen that is about it.. unless she happens to be over 3 years old.. dressed out , they look like those rubber chickens you see in the "3 Stooges" movies..

when I recite like I did about hatching, remember it is IMHO . however if the original article came from byc, I would certainly research it .. or in my usual opinion,,,, reject it..

Hi All!

Love the kid pic! I miss being around goats! Then I remember the work and how much trouble they can get into!

Wow! my grand son's would love that tractor too! You all know it's just a "practice" tractor...

My guineas have been laying all winter! My EE roosters mount then all the time I'm going to do some more research on guinea/chicken crosses... may try to hatch a few.

Got to find a way to break Storky of her broodiness! It's been over a month!

I don't think letting mom hatch the chicks makes less roos either. Out of Jasmine's 7 she hatched...at least 4 were roos, 2 hens and one that had an accident before I could tell. Lacey's 5 chicks had 4 roos!

Looked like a real nice day, most of the girls were out at least for a while today. Again I felt like crap.

Wonder if it was a side effect of the "Chantix" I started?

May pop on later.... if not, night!

you cannot base the offspring on what the parents look like .. you have to also know what the prior one or two generations were.. I won't go into it any deeper than that..
