Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I haven't thought about that, but I too don't sell anything that we wouldn't eat. we stopped "selling" eggs cause some of our hens are getting older and we've been finding blood/meat spots

but we still have people coming over to get eggs. guess it don't bother them. bugs me.

some of you are talking about meat birds that got me thinking about butchering and freezing birds, this question is for everyone, what kind of bags do you use for freezing your birds and how long do they stay untouched by freezer burn? I used those vacuum sealer machines and I went through so many failed attempts that it wasn't worth it. then regular freezer bags allowed freezer burn and weren't big enough. sigh!

any who gotta go peel potatoes

You have it partly correct.. the humidity is for the pipped eggs, not the unpipped eggs..
that teacher opened the bator on a pipped egg? guess where the shrink-wrap came from..
no sympathy from me to her.. If she wants sympathy; look in the dictionary; you will find sympathy somewhere between sh!t and syphilis ..

I'd like to repost and get some sympathy...
My only Lavender Orpington to pip got shrink wrapped!!!

I also happened to talk to that teacher who's classroom has the incubator in it. Apparently she took the top off "a couple times" yesterday!! Sh*t!!! Now I don't know if the other three will pip or not. I know humidity is crucial when they've pipped, but can they survive this situation since they HAVEN'T pipped yet?

GGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

we use ziploc freezer bags for freezing.. the trick to prevent freezer burn is to get as much air out of the bag as you can..

here is what I do: put the bird into the bag and then zip it almost closed.. then dip the bag into a deep pail of clean water,, that will force the air out of the unzipped portion of the bag.. then close the bag and take it out of the water.. it is almost as good as those vacuum sealed bags.

You can also buy shrink wrap bags.. but they cost about 50 cents each..

we cut up many of the chickens before bagging them.. they fit into the bags easier, and takes up way less room in the freezer..

just for you TeyyuP : ...........hunubwusc,,,,,,,,,,

Shrink wrapped is when the membrane around the chick dries out, essentially trapping it in the egg until it dies. That's why humidity has to be so high when Hatching occurs. The teacher opened the lid several times yesterday with a pipped egg. Jim... I didn't want sympathy for her... Just me :p

Thanks, Babylady4! I didn't really give it a whole lot of thought until our home insurance company balked at us having chickens/coop. (I haven't looked at the policy - but I'm guessing our reply of "no sales" is their loophole for not covering us if we did get sued.) The last time I tried to figure this out info I got waylaid by way too much information and no real answers. After reading that egg cartons aren't to be reused/recycled (apparently your supposed to sell in NEW cartons?) -- or maybe I got that wrong, too, I stopped there. I only use recycled egg cartons and don't intend to purchase new cartons for eggs I give away or possibly sell... B.S. pure & simple. I don't want to be paranoid but I also don't want to risk everything should someone decide to sue. It's probably be harder to prove you weren't the cause of "whatever they're suing for" then for them to prove you were. Regardless, I just don't want to open myself up to that exposure, hassle or worry. That's just me... I wonder if you had people sign a waiver if that would limit liability exposure? Don't know... sorry, I have more questions than answers. I was just checking to see if anyone had gone down this path and had answers...

Well, off to lock up the ducks & chickens and make some oatmeal bars....

Goodnight & Thanks.
Elaine

P.S. Apyl, very sorry about the pip! I personally think it's human nature to want to lift the lid if you can't see the eggs and you DON'T KNOW BETTER! Caught my hubby AND son BOTH trying to open my incubator @ different times (first year I had the incubator last year) and so I wrote a BIG NOTE and TAPED it to the TOP just in case they forgot again or their curiousoity (sp) got the better of them. (They NOW know better than to mess with my eggs and the BIG NOTE just reinforces that knowledge.) While it's really sad that it/they are shrink-wrapped, it is an opportunity to teach that teacher (and students?) more about the hatching process and how important temp/humidity is.... I know that doesn't help your pain this time but hopefully it'll help you have a more successful hatch the next time.

Mazojoe, I love that area. My DH's family hails from the Spring Green and Cassville areas. His cousin is the principal at the Brooklyn Elementary School in Oregon, and his other cousin runs a sporting goods store in Mazomanie. How my DH ended up with a FIB for a wife is a long story indeed! ;)

BTW, 1992 here!

Sporting goods store in Mazo, not familiar with it? What is the name of it?

Just got back from eating a whole plate of crayfish for a wonderful Fat Tuesday celebration!

BF4M- nice chickies and tough break also, hopefully everything works out for you!

Elaine, could you ask for a 'donation' for the eggs instead? Then you are technically not selling them...

I hate all that insurance/liability crap; everyone's looking for somebody to blame.

Nice lookin' chickies bf4m!! That's quite the face on the rugrat. :)
