Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

CRS so i'm not replying other then to Bf4m because you were the last post !! lol Congrats on the new chicks hatched, sorry to hear of the shrink wrapped and Congrats on the new Meyer chicks. What kind are they?

Well, went online to check my bank statement today and there were two charges on it that I didn't recognize. one for $11.55 and another one for $1.00. Came from a place called Hosting Sales with a toll free number of 866 511-8696 out of CA. Not a working number when i called it.

Called the bank, now they have to cancel my tyme card and I have to wait 7-10 business days to get the new ones. WHAT A PITA !!!

Then i have to go to the bank and file a fraud complaint !! Another PITA.

I googled that number and seems I'm not the only one that has these mysterious charges showing up on the bank statements.

So, thought I would share this info with you all. Check your bank statements, someone is out to steal what little i have left !!!

Sorry about the bank acct. that stuff has happened to us before as well. I got 2 EE girls, named them Lady and Libby. I got one White Cochin, named her LuLu. I am going to sell some of the Marans hatchlings. I don't need them all. I'll keep a couple and get rid of the others. I'm going to look the the vent sexed pullets wing feathers. They are the same age as my chicks, and compare female feathers with what I have.

This is a PUBLIC PEEP ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

For those of you in the "greater Madison area" or so, DH (and I) will be holding a seminar for beginner chicken enthusiasts. This seminar is geared to the soon to be first time chicken owners (still researching), or those people just starting out and have their first hens wanting a little more "help", or for those who just want more info. Also Dh usually touches on raising meat birds. There is a question and answer session at the end of the seminar.
For those of you who don't know, DH works as the Game Bird Consultant for Cargill (Nutrena Feeds) and he is also their Poultry Go To Guy, He has been in the poultry world for a little over 40 years, raising meat birds, show birds, layers, and pets.

So, on to the deets:
The seminar is Tuesday February 28 from 6-8 pm and is being held at Mazo Hardware Hank in Mazomanie.
The address is: 17 W Commercial St, Mazomanie WI, 53560
The phone number to the hardware store is 608-795-9919

There will be some chicks for sale, They are a sex link variety, all pullets, and quite cute if I do say so myself. They are Gold Stars from Abendroth's Hatchery.

Thanks for your time!!
Cheers!

Hi all...I had a fantastic morning! I went t get the "bark-offs" and the woman was so nice! She gave me a huge bag of raw green peanuts to make boiled peanuts. I havent had them for a couple of years! I was buying raw from the mill and them boiling them but those seem to be really ld...these are much fresher! I might save a few and see if I can grow some of my own...might be able to plant early this year! DH called and said that the storm fr Thursday might bring us 4-8" of snow! Maybe...then it is supposed to get to 45 so it will all melt and make us some more MUD...just what we need!
th.gif
Then maybe spring will come.

After I visited with her for a while (she asked If I would come and sell eggs at the market in Waterloo--didnt know the regulations either) I went to the grocery store and then to the cheese factory. They had fresh curds today! OMG they are to die for! I bought a half pound bag and ate the whole thing on the way home! THey dont refrigerate them until the night so they are right out of the vat and still have a bit of whey on them and are so squeaky you wouldnt believe it!!! (can you tell I like cheese curds?)
So I am n my way home finally and I drive by this place that I thought belonged to a friend of my neighbors cause I saw the dogs outside...(he has sheep and they were BC dogs...understand?) A woman answers the door and I ask if it is his house and she says No....so then I tell her what I thought and she invites me in and we talk for like 3 hours!!!! She is a watercolor artist and writes for the paper with interviews of local artists and is going to do a story on me! Her paintings are fantastic! I wish I had talent like that! So she is going to come to my place and we will ride horses. I dont know what else but I have a feeling lots of talking is involved! I just LOVE to meet new friends!

Making some Italian sausage soup for supper...was going to make it last night but didnt have the spinach (I thought) bought some more and found the other bag in the fridge while putting away groceries...god thing we like spinach! Well I better get out and get the feed in...gotta get night chores done too--I have a 4H meeting again tonight....

Speaking of meetings--the Jefferson County animal swap is this weekend on Sunday...if anyone wants to go. I think it is a buck to get in--goes from 7-12 or 2...cant remember. I was kinda thinking of taking some of my quail along to sell...shoulda bred more finches too! Maybe I will bring some hatching eggs...

Later! TErri O

I guess you all were bored yesterday? Geez! Ya can't miss one day around here, or you'll spend hours just reading.

I spent the entire day yesterday with my mom. We had such a great time.

BBP, so sorry to hear about your mom's lav.

Awwww, Bf4, that just sucks!
hit.gif
And Elaine really had a great response for you.
hugs.gif
Cute pics! Those black Marans look identical to my supposed lav orps.
he.gif
$hit! I was so hoping they were black/lav orp splits! How can that be? One egg was brown, but the other 2 were almost white. And that kitty looks a little POed, like he wants his potty box back.

You have to have your pic upright in your picture program on your computer.

Ahhh, Jim, you certainly have a way with words. Thanks for making me laugh despite a sad occurrance. See? I have no problems with thanking you.

On the whole selling eggs/getting sued stuff, how can they even prove to anyone that they bought eggs from you? If they like farm fresh eggs, and especially if they lived out somewhere rural or semi-rural, who is to say which home with a flock of chickens they bought their eggs from? I suppose if you had a sign up by the road or an ad posted somewhere, it would be different. As for the dog warnings (and the eggs), if someone has a good (ha!) enough lawyer, you'll get screwed either way, and in these times with the bad economy, everyone seems to be sue happy.

I hope you feel better soon, old man Joe.

Sorry. When I was a kid, my dad was Big Joe & my brother was Little Joe. Dad became Old Joe as I got older.

Ah, too funny! TO beat me with the OM Joe comment.
TO, you need a bobcat for cleaning out that coop.

Newjoe, you gotta be kidding me! Your "old mind"?????? Oh please!

Just wait. It gets better.

Congrats on the new chicks, Bf4!

FT, at least there weren't a few zeros after the charges.

Still stinks though.

Well, better get working on dinner. And whoever has the snow, you can just keep it.

Hi folks,

Elaine, the issues you mention are a real concern here. If you notice my chickens came as an addition for my market garden sales. The easiest/affordable thing I found to this point is a "balloon" to my insurance for increased liability. Next month when I renew I will ask about the eggs and eventual meat birds I plan to raise and sell this summer, those will go a processor and be inspected but I'm a bit worried about my current company's outlook on poultry. Here in the north with few farms getting a regular farm package is a challenge,,,we'll see.

Yesterday I called food pantries in the area, got through to one and donated 12 dozen eggs (had 3 customers on vacation and got backed up here,,lol) an hour after I got home the other pantry I called back to and want to BUY eggs from me every Saturday, offering $2/doz,,,,I get $3 but will gladly take $2 when there are excess. It allows me to order an additional 50 pullets knowing there is a guaranteed sale ( is this correct chicken math?). The market is here for sure in summer months and by next fall I know my year around customer base will have grown. I started this egg thing in Dec,,,,not a great time to grow a new business here,,,,lol

I

Unkadan - congrats on the food pantry becoming a regular customer, that's awesome! Even if it isn't full price it must feel great to have a backup buyer! If and when you hear something on the insurance aspect of selling eggs, I'd be interested in hearing what your insurance co. says....

Thanks!

Elaine

CC I think OMJ's Grand kids or some other kids beat you to it !!! LOL

I won't have anyone sign a waiver either for buying eggs but I would if they monkey with the horses.
Oh and if someone would get sick from our eggs the source can be traced to the culprit. Modern science you know. I would be more hesitant to give the eggs to a homeless shelter then to sell them. All it would take is a good lawyer to talk a homeless person that has no money out of the money they rob from you.
Just sayin.
I sell my eggs (or some of them) to a health food store which I can do without a license because she is a licensed egg grader. Who would get sued. Probably her then she'd sue me.
But I don't spend my life in a bubble so what happens happens. Just with an LLC it would protect my house that the bank owns. LOL

About 3 years ago someone stole my identity through paypal and ordered a 2 leather Jackets from some state down south and had it sent to the Netherlands !!! It was $500. I called the company and asked them what size the jackets were. They said Medium. I said, nope now I know I didn't order them. I think Discover card absorbed that loss unless they got it back from paypal. Don't know if the Leather Company lost a dime!!!

Illness must be going around today. I have a stuffy nose and sore throat. I've had weird sinus issues the last few months and I never have that. Bought one of those sinus rinses last night. (I know more info then you really needed to know but hey that is all that is new up here) Ought to be fun since those who know me know what a little nose I have !! LOL And no comment from the Peanut gallery about the size of my mouth !!! LIL

Oh I forgot, I do have some news. I've had 2 duck eggs in the last two days.

Speaking of selling eggs, what are you all getting for eggs around the state? I was charging $2 a doz. I have mixed breeds so I have mixed sizes. Not all Extra Large. More like just med-large with an occasional exlarge EE egg.

I was charging $4 for duck eggs but lowered it to $3. I think I am going to have to raise it again. Don't think I will ever break even with my costs. This is the second month in a row with an electric bill of $250.

So whatcha all get for eggs?

Found this @ https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/140839/egg-selling-liability/10 and thought it was interesting....

3/4/09

I'm an insurance adjuster so maybe I can shed some light on this, bearing in mind that policies differ from company to company and state to state ...

Typically the liability portion of your homeowners insurance (or tenants insurance if you're a renter) does not cover claims arising out of your business or farming activities. That's because you should have a separate commercial policy to cover those activities (your homeowners insurance isn't designed for it). That being said, most insurers will be happy to add a hobby farm endorsement to your policy for a very small fee if you just have a small operation. Others may say that such small-scale egg production doesn't count as a farming activity in the first place and you may already be covered for it.

The best thing to do is talk to your insurance broker where you buy your insurance and they'll either make a note on your file so everyone knows you're covered for your chicken activities, or charge you a small fee for a special endorsement (or, if your current carrier gets the heebie-jeebies over chickens, they can change you to an insurance company that will accomodate you). Either way you can go home and get a good night's sleep

I pay $3 a dozen from the farm I buy them from.
