Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I didn't look too close... I saw from the window a wide open bloody carcass that could only be Rocket because of the size. Eaten alive and the rest left to rot...

I am ssssssssooooooooooooooooo sad

good morning, my guess would be raccoon also.. although up here we have bears that could do that kind of damage.. but the bear would not leave any scraps..

hatch #1 is over.. 4 clears, one cracked and 17 hatched out of 22.. quite a few black legged ones.. even the ones with yellow legs do not have barrock markings.. The Dels look good, though..

tomorrow and Friday are due dates for hatch #2.. 58 eggs waiting ..

I am very pleased with the bator I am using as a hatcher.. 99 to 100F constant, and 49 to 56% humidity.. not a sign of any sticky chicks.. even after I open the door and remove the already hatched chicks..

I am not very happy with my Del hens.. still getting only 3 eggs a day from 10 hens.. after I am done collecting eggs for hatching, I think I will have a butchering party.. but first I am going to switch layer ration (to crumbles), and see if that makes any difference.. I just do not like to feed crumbles to any chickens that I am going to butcher.. so if the crumbles don't do the trick, I will keep them penned up and give them ground corn and oats for a couple of weeks..

I will raise up the del chicks that are hatching now, since their mothers are good steady layers..

and that is my story and I' m sticking to it.........

Morning folks,

Bl4 dang what a deal,,,I vote would be raccoon yes to the live trap idea,,,something you just have to do if you grow anything in confinement,,,deal with the predators.

I do have a recipe for "coon-be-gone" but it has to used under very controlled conditions,,,,100% affective farmer tested.

this darn cold weather still hanging in for me, supposed to hit 48º today but that isn't going to happen unless the clouds clear off

bundling up and heading out

Can you enlighten me about the "golden M" recipe and why you think it is bad NJ? That is my go to solution if I cant trap the buggers....maybe there is a problem that I dont know about?
So sad about your friends Bigfam! I hate when the predators dont at least take the carcass with them...if the whole thing is eaten then somehow it isnt so bad. Same goes for the garden...if you need to eat then eat! Dont take one bite out of everything and destroy it!
Man, I am REALLY hungry and I have to go to the grocery store...yup, I better eat some eggs! Not a good idea to shop on an empty stomach!

Mike Gilbert in Holmen Wisconsin has Chanticleers. I think he is president of the chanticleer club? Wonderful person to talk to. He is also in charge of the chicken show that will be in Gaillesville in June.

Sorry about the chicken and guinea losses.

I forgot what I was going to say. Hmmm

Lots to read though. :)

My lil Peep white silkie crowed today so I guess it is made up. She is no longer a she. I do not recommend raising a lone chicken either and coddling them. Now she gets beat up by everybody and only likes people. Poor thing.

Wow those racoons must be strong. I sure I hope I do not have to deal with any. So sorry Bf4.

I know what you mean about the size difference of chicks TO. some just a week apart and the littler ones look pathetic. lol I have a pip from some eggs I thought were going to hatch last Saturday. I don't keep very good notes I guess.

Oh Bl4me that's so sad! Hate when it happens but it happens. I'm with Dan have a few predator remedies round here too. Hope you can make the rest safe! Thanks CC gonna miss her B'in. I'm sure Btwo will fill in the gap. I swear it's her DD. She always made me laugh when she'd B'd. Dang PR's! Jim if your serious about butchering and need a hand I'd be available to help we're down to 1 bird in the freezer. I could use 4 to tide us over till the new batch would be ready. Or if you need to rotate some we're headed by your place. Pm or E me if so. Would gladly help you out either way! Just the kind of guy I am!

It is 100% indiscriminate!

,,,and a leg hold or conibear trap discriminate?

I , like TO use the GM as a method of control as a last resort,,,in a perfect world raccoons would be as "cute" as they look and never damage crops or livestock. (and never learn to avoid traps) I would not choose to post the recipe simply because any use of a lethal poison needs careful use and consideration. That said it is a simple fix IF used correctly/safely. IMO

suns out time to get back at it
