We are a friendly bunch that talk about the weather, our animals & families, post pics, bring up injustices', and joke around! Oh and have parties!!!!
My loud mouth is starting to sound like a heckler. Squawk, squawk....over and over. I wish she'd just lay that darn egg already!!!!!

The other two are beginning to mimic her on occasion. Is this gonna continue or is this just the beginning of the cycle? I know that chickens make noise, but so far it has been more like cooing.

I saved the tomatillos from an inherent squash vine death yesterday! The squash are doing great this year! At the rate that they are growing they will grow out of the garden and into the yard. I think we will have more than our share of hubbard, acorn, and butternut squash (as long as the borers don't get 'em). I also have muskmelon doing well and green beans. I hope that the tomatillos come back from being choked (literally) by the squash tendrils. I plan to plant a lot of radish seeds under all of the squash vines, this prevents the borers. I don't think the corn will produce anything but a few of them have survived and are knee-high.

Short of the garden and my noisy chicken, we are house hunting. Our house is fairly big and the rent is affordable. However, we would like to have a larger savings than we do, pay off my student loans, and we figure that the kids are only a few years away from being teens and they won't be around the house much at that point! The only problem is that we want to stay in the same school district, but I doubt that we will find a house where we can have chickens.

hi folks,

one of those typical northern WI days for weather,,,cool night, nice early morning, clouds keep moving through with showers, then the sun peaks out

found the 1st 2 pullet eggs from the 20 wk old Marans,,,not exceptionally dark but dark and spotted hope to find a few more, need to get nest boxes in that new coop,,,lol

corn is starting to tassel and it did straighten up after the blow down

beans have been blooming for a week, need to check for growth

good luck to the hubby FT,,,,

looks like the radar shows some of you dry folks might get some needed rain today,,,fingers crossed for you

have to go pickup some straw for the coops and mulch,,,,

Unkadan~congrats on the first eggs! Glad your corn was able to stand back up. Looks like this soaker coming thru might make it to your neck of the northwoods too

Hope you get your straw home in time. We need to get on the stick with that ourselves.

Hi all!
Just checking in whilst eating a PB&J. The "J" is some of my homemade blueberry jam. That stuff rocks!!! Yummmmmyyyy!
Gave the Girls some left over from the other night. Pancakes with a cheese and bacon omelette. They are in heaven!!! And it's straight from the fridge so it's cold!

Vicki-Yes I did indeed say the four letter word at you! Snow...snow....snow...snow! There! said it some more!! I happen to love snow. I like shoveling it, playing in it, taking pictures of it, walking around in it, and watching it fall. I like watching the kids snow mobile in it as long as they don't use my yard as a short cut! The only thing I don't like is driving in it. Once the roads are cleared though it's not to bad.
We had a really dry winter down here last season so I am hoping we get a better one this year.
And see, I told you my rain was heading over to your place!!! I love you chicken story about the umbrella! Too cool!!

CS-Once your hens start to get into the swing of things, they may quiet down. I have a couple that get to cackling loud in the morning and once they lay they are quiet as church mice. Hope your tomatillos make it!

Well, now that lunch is done, best get onto other things. Maybe I'll take a pic of Ben. The last y'all saw of him he was a fuzz butt like Twizz's.

FT... I am sending prayers and love your way. I hope hubby comes out of everything good, and with answers.

Honestly... no rain. If we have had any, it rained for 3 min. No downpour either.

This morning I went for a 5.5 mile run/walk. i was a bit sweaty by the time I got home. YES i did take a shower.

I don't have a lot to report. Not getting much in the line of eggs. Hoping to move some of the chicks from may into the main flock. They are getting too big for the brooder, and I feel bad because they get to see all the others let out to play. My roosters have been drilling. It really IS only like 2 seconds! how does that even work?! I also think I need to get some roos butchered. I dont care if there's not a lot of meat at this point. I just want less of them! Walking around... crowing... fighting eachother... drilling girls... eating feed. The ones I am going to keep are looking pretty skinny, so less roos aught to get them to fatten up a bit.

lunch time, and yeling time. Told the kids at 1pm it was tv off and time to clean. Can you imagine how messy this place gets with 5 boys running around here all day long? I mean the amount of socks and underwear laying EVERYWHERE is ridiculous! (and yes... it IS the boys underwear CC).

Hi all, we had a real nice soaker last night.. I can always tell by the water puddle in the driveway, aka the goose pond..

I heard it thunder and Annie said she heard me say "yeah !" .. I don't remember doing that..

I called the experts at Wausau Hydraulics about my tractor problem.. they/we deduced that I should bring the pump to them and they would check it out.. In 2006 it cost $275.oo for that pump. I'm glad that they kept a record of it.. just in case I have to replace it.. the new one has to be identical for it to fit..

I drained all the fluid and added new fluid.. then I removed the check valve and it looked OK.. No collapsed hoses.. it almost has to be the pump..

I have a "squash" question.. If I were to cut all the runners off at the end, will the plant set any more blossoms ? or will the blossoms I already have be all that I get ? I am afraid that the squashes are going to smother my cukes.. I have blossoms like heII won't have it..

I have to keep a watch on the beans. a couple of days ago they were loaded with blossoms.. the potatoes are loaded with blossoms , too..
the raspberries are not quite done, and the blackberries are starting.. I love to go out and pick the warm blackberries and eat them, fresh off the vine..

I hear a couple of chicks chirping,, better check the incubators..

so much to do..

we have one barred rock that cackles BEFORE she lays an egg and then again after she lays it..

BF4Me, the reason those roosters are so fast, they don't have to take in a movie and a meal ..

Yes this weather today is nice. Yesterday was sooo hot! We got a decent rain too. The chooks are really appreciating it.

Cind I sure hope you can get the waterworks fixed soon.

Now for a creepy(at least to me) question.... I saw a rat the other day (I think I puked in my mouth a little). I am sooooo scared of rodents, and I was wondering what to do about them. We live on a farm and I assumed there were some around someplace, but I have never seen one. My family warned me about getting chickens and that they would bring rats, but I thought I was being so careful. I think one may have tried to burrow under and get in by the chickens

I bought some poison today at the hardware store. Yuck!

you live on a dairy farm.. the rats were there before you got chickens.. the rats are only more visible with chickens because the feed is out for everybody to see.. and you will notice , like you have, that the rats will dig..

be careful where you put the poison.. and also, the rats will sometimes die somewhere in the yard while looking for water to drink.. you do not want your dog to eat one of those..

rats are very easy to trap.. either a small sized live trap or a good steel or wooden rat trap..

If you use a live trap, remember, if a rat can fit it's head through a hole, he will be able to fit his whole body through.. so you will want the wires to be about 3/4 inch apart or less..

a good way to kill the trapped rat is to submerge the whole trap under water for a long time..
a half hour minimum.. rats can go a long time under water..
