Good foggy morning! H&R just stopped by to drop off some extra cukes. Man are they NICE! All the same size and packed double in the box...looks like the store did it. MIne never seem to mature at the same time like that...of course I have very few since the one row didnt grow. This is making me humgry for crock pickles but I have such bad luck and I'd hate to waste them. What to do?
Hey DrH...have you ever done spears with your pickles and if yes, how did they turn out? These are too big for whole but I bet they would make dandy spears...maybe I will experiment....

DH finally got home at 2:30 AM! Sure am glad I didnt have big hopes for going to the fair yesterday! He is still dead asleep; train travel must tire one out...must be all that sitting around hey?

Got a prayer in for you and the house CS! How fantastic if you could get the whole 10 acres...just think of all the stuff you could have! (and $$ you can spend on feed!) LOL--

Well I guess I better go out and check on the gardens...stuff to feed too...I am kind of glad I dont have to go to work after all today...but know I will wish I was there when it gets HOT!

voles in the gh have been raising hell with the maters,,need more cats I guess,,,never have figured out how a tiny vole can eat 1/2 of a 1#mater wth

corn/cabbage needed that rain this morning hopefully a few crops will makeup for some problem areas

the girls that were broody are now all in moult,,,I upped the protein and added kelp and alfalfa meal to the feed

everyday a few more pullet eggs, the Marans dark eggs are getting bigger fast

waiting on the fools day hatch, interested in seeing how my mutts do for eggs

I see that I forgot to mention that the BFF's comment was about my onions. Just came in from digging up the rest of the whites, those will go in the freezer in a couple of days. Dan too bad they didn't have time to leave any money.

Speaking of cats Bob had fresh mouse this morning while I was picking cuc's and after he was told WHAT A GOOD BOY HE WAS!

He likes to be appreciated too. Noticed the last couple of days the mater vines are starting to die, no sign of any kind of blight think it's just their time. But the fruit is starting to turn so I think we're ok. DAS thanks for posting that link added it to favorites. TO what a score! I pick mine for up to 3 days before canning. I have learned that if you see the perfect sized one while on the other side of the patch go get it right away or else it will disappear and grow into a B&B cuc.

Man their sneaky buggers! Yes I do cut the bigger ones into spears like the others they taste just like pickles only spear shaped.

cs just make sure you can ALWAYS make the payment or arrange a clause for a late payment. You have to think of what would happen if you and your DH lost your jobs. Otherwise you could lose everything you have invested. Maybe things are different today but I've heard of it happening. Just sayin.

Ended up with 20 lbs of cabbage from 4 heads, no bugs and very beautiful heads!

Bigz ended up getting the bigger crock out. I looked at the heads, looked at the crock, looked at the heads, looked at the crock. Too close to chance it. Man I love my garden!

I see some of the lettuces I replanted are doing a lot better. BFF says his is too and is getting some spinach to grow finally. Need to replant AGAIN!

Afternoon everyone, kind of lost track of days here

had to remind myself it's Sat. DD had a fast pitch softball tourny this weekend- they played their 1st game yesterday and got creamed by the other team- they were placed in the highest bracket due to addition of 4 players from the 2nd team so the teams they played against were more advanced. They played again this am and also lost so they are done for the season. Today's game was a bit better. DH and DD are glad that next year she will play U14 which will help.

TO- glad you liked the cucumbers- they were some from the 10 gals that we picked last night- we made up 6 qts of dill pickles last night and now are working on making bread and butter pickles- probably enough to fill 2 five quart pails. I will check with our neighbor and see if he will share his crock pickle receipe

Back to work on the pickles.

good aft, kind of raining on and off ,, but not hard..
I made it to the wine shop.. real nice helpful people in there.. It is the same wine shop I used to go to years ago, only with these new owners..

some of you will be happy to hear that I salvaged 4 gallons of rhubarb wine.. had about a quart extra, so I guess we will have to drink it up so it doesn't spoil.. I was tweaking the wine when Annie suggested that I had better go to the wine shop before I couldn't make it.. good advice..

I have enough fresh berries for another batch.. I will work on that later today..

tractor guy didn't show up again .. I am going to look for a different mechanic.. too bad bro from RI isn't staying longer,, he is a trained diesel mech.. worked on some big boats in Fla..

maybe I should just go ahead and split the tractor and pull the motor ,, just to get things started..

I set Annies Royal Purple guinea eggs (1 doz),, along with 2 dozen of my own.. and I also set 40 quail eggs.. that is the last of the setting for this summer..

the 3 peachicks are feathering out real nicely.. I believe they are the most skittish of all baby birds..

the turkey in the lean to still has one chick with her.. I might turn her loose in about a week..

Well bad news! DH & I got into the car after writing up the land contract with the agent and my dad had left a message saying that he had decided that he didn't want to move into the country.

He had originally said that he'd sell his house and put down a payment with the sales. Unfortunately, we can't afford this house without him! I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
