Get to it guineas, that's why you're in the Garden of Eden.

I was looking over our Fair Premium book, and I am wondering: what do the rest of you pay for entry fees and what are the money amounts for the prizes??? ( I am asking because I think our Fair is steep with the fees and cheap with the prizes.) I have never entered anything into our Fair due to the paltry prize amount.
BL4, I had to buy a weekend wristband for $20, plus $2 for processing. That's it for fees (I sure hope anyway.) Prizes are from $1 to $3 per entry on most things, if you place 1-4 that is. I figured if I get at least 3rd place average in my entries it will cover the wristband. I entered half photos and half veggies, plus a blown egg craft.

Wow, I can only imagine what my dreams are going to be like tonight !!! All this talk about big crocks and the size of heads !!! Geez.... and not to mention all the talk about cucumbers !!!! Surprised Bigfam didn't say anything about that.... may be before her time !! LOL Always feel weird picking out cukes at the store !!!!!

CS so sorry to hear your Dad has changed his mind. Give him a day or so to think about it. Disappointing for sure. TO brought up a good point. Delicate subject for sure about his future care.

I have to go back and check out Tiki's links too. I've seen the shagbark site before and I think I saved it but that could have been on my old laptop.

My little old aunt (90) said something funny today. She was talking about someone (can't remember who now) but she said he "has alot of guts.... More than a sausage company !!!" Other than that it was same conversation as usual. Negative negative. She hates having home care. My sister said she really gives the help a hard time (never mind bigfam !! ) and has called them a few choice names that I can't mention on here.
Talking with her really brings me down..... not a darn thing I can say or do.... feel so helpless.

Anyway, this chicken math is getting out of hand. Another trip for feed Monday and another on Tuesday for chick feed. $$$$ is short and gas prices are sky rocketing !!!
DH accepted an offer to play golf today....yes I know he deserves a day of fun now and then but he needed to get new shoes which cost money of course and then he h
thumbsup.gif
ad to pay $65 to golf !!! He supposedly got a steak dinner out of it. Said he be home by 5 or so. More like 8pm. He said he wouldn't drink. He had 3 beers. Not a real big deal but remember he is on the heart monitor because he has a slow heart rate that has gone as low as 25 bpm on an EKG. STUPID is all I can say !!!! I really lost my patients tonight between him and my Aunt.
Guess you can all tell by now that I'm not in a very good mood !!! LOL I have to go to Racine on Friday for a doc appt for myself and then my nephew's 18th Birthday party is on Saturday in Racine. I always get real hyper before I have to leave to go out of town. So much to do before I leave and with DH not understanding this Ticks me off !!!!
Ok, well, not that I"m working myself all up again I had better quit while I'm ahead so I can sleep. (with the help of ambien of course !! LOL)O

Congrats Raim on the weight loss. How'd ya do it ? Maybe if I didn't have ice cream for supper I could lose a few ??

Vicky, glad to hear the broody butt might be out and getting some sunshine soon !! There is a product called Poultry Cal. Fleet Farm sells it now too. It has calcium and grit in it.
My understanding is that with most layer feeds you should still have the calcium available on the side. The layer feed should be properly balanced for the calcium/phos ratio. I would think if it is like horses you don't want a higher phos then calcium. Just adding calcium on the side should work.
You can always grind up some cooked egg shells and mix with the food or calcium you have on the side. Or smash up the boiled eggs with the shells.

Bl4 good luck on your fight for chickens in town !!! You're doing a good thing !!!

Bigz...... Happy Belated Birthday !!! Would you believe I went to google some online birthday cards and I lost internet connection. When I got it back I had forgotten what I was doing !!!!

So Happy Belated Birthday Bigz !!!

Oh and Unk how big are the heads at your stand ?

Hi All!

CS....Yea, talk to your dad... tell him all the advantages of country life, including a longer life span! Has he seen the place? Maybe if you get him out there and show him what can be done with the place you could talk him into it. DH was pretty much a city boy until I let him know how unhappy I was living in town, he found a place in the country to rent and never looked back! When we went to buy a place, "in town" was never considered.

DrH... Bob did real good! Mine like to bring me "presents" too... I always praise them too.

Jim... hope you find someone soon to help with the tractor. Please don't try to do too much by yourself! That can be dangerous! A friend of the family got crippeld trying to split his on his own.

CC...cute tractor pic... bet it cost more than a buck 98 to make!

Guess not much else... getting tired!
It did rain here... still need lots!
DH got the water heater going.

Night All!

Humm... feel like I'm forgetting something....

I ran the dirty girl yesterday. Now my friend has me almost convinced to do the worrior dash. But when I read "obstacles from hell" on the website I get a little concerned. Anyone ever done this one? Are they that bad? And I skip them if they're too scary?

BBP they send you through electric fence. 'Nough said.

Our Fair will charge you $20 for the entry fee for the first 25 items. Prizes are only given to first second and third, and first prize is $1.75. To me it is not worth it to enter so I never do.

BEAUTIFUL COOL MORNING EVERYONE!

FT~ (and all) Yep. Have the extra little feeder on the wall in their coop filled with oyster shell but they never seemed to pay it any attention so now I sprinkle some on top of their feed. Just wondered if just the shell was balanced. I'll have to look for the new poultry cal when I go to FF on Tuesday.

SERIOUS QUESTION~ What do any of you wise folks

know about Blue Comb ? Because I was under the weather the past 2 weeks I hadn't been paying as super close attention to the girls as I thought. Noticed this just a little bit a couple weeks ago, on Crockpot I think, but noticed yesterday it is getting more pronounced (spreading) and appears to be on everyone but my big hen, Soup. What I am talking about are dark, almost black to black, patches on their combs and wattles, in some cases edging the comb like it was traced with magic marker. No, it's not Fowl Pox. No raised areas, aka "pox", or white edges, etc. Just these areas "small to bigger "patches" of black. That's what makes me think Blue Comb. Their age is right, poor background is right, weather conditions right,

. Anyway, they seem otherwise fine. Everyone eating, pooping, drinking, running around, even broody butt when I kick her out.

Did research on this and know it can run anywhere from no more serious than a cold to sudden death. Wonder if it didn't come from the neighbor's flock? She was over here a few weeks ago and not very "chickie savvy".

Anyone else had experience with this? Really appreciate your input. Boy, I really like these girls but I'm beginning to think I made a major boo boo here. One problem after another.

TIKI~have to get outside right now but will be pm'ing you later.

Vic - sorry to hear about the waddle/comb issue. I wish I had some insight for you!

Thanks everyone for the advice for my dad. He wants to be able to drive to activities or the store in a short amount of time. The problem in our area is that you can't find a place that allows critters close enough to activities. We'll keep looking however! Maybe there IS a house close enough to qualify.

what a day !! Mom was at her worst.. could switch from chair to chair at the table in the blink of an eye, but was too weak to stand and walk just 5 minutes later.. then she "forgot" how to sit down.. then she "forgot" how to lay her head on her pillow.. If I ever get senile (er) I told my daughters to just shoot me.. just don't tell me you are doing it,, sneak up behind me and let me have it..

I have batch #4 of wine started.. It is really going strong.. funny how each batch is different..

I found a young Del roo dead in the run.. didn't look like a natural death, but no sign of a struggle like feathers laying around.. Annie said, set a trap.. I said, what am I trying to catch ?

I had chili and Corona Extra for supper.. peanuts for dessert.. I think that covers most of the food groups..

FT , the wine shop is next to Gullivar's Landing.. just at the south end of the new bridge on 17th ave.. You can take the NN exit off of 51/39 and go East to the end and turn left at the lake.. You can see it from there.. it is an old house turned into the shop.. she showed me a "***** mix" .. You mix this concoction with wine and make a slushy with it.. says it is good for using up "bad" wine.. costs about $10/gal.. she had different flavors..

Annie ordered a dozen Royal Purple guinea eggs from Stromburg's.. I think she paid $20 for them.. It took almost a month to get them.. I said, what the heII ? do they have only one hen?
I saved my 2 dozen eggs about an extra week so I could set them all at the same time.. I hope THAT wasn't a mistake..

I increased the brooder temp tonight.. it is a bit chilly out there..

My dessert (Corona) is gone .. time to get another..

bbl...........jiminwisc............
Wow, Jim, so sorry to hear about your mom. You are an amazing son to take care of her! Just dealt with similar when caring for a failing neighbor a while back but her hospice only lasted a short few months. Can't imagine going thru this with a loved one. You are one strong person!

Think I have a better understanding now of your wine making hobby
wink.png

good NICE cool AM< Yeah, Vicki,, I never made the connection of the excessive wine making to the rigors of Mom's escapades.. the electrical impulses in her brain skip around .. trying to figure her out is futile.. we can lead her to the dinner table, and she has such a death grip on the handles of her walker, we can hardly pry her loose,, then only one minute later, she cannot hold onto her spoon.. when she is talking to her imaginary friends, her voice is clear as a bell, but ask her a question,, and we can hardly understand what she is saying,,,, if she even bothers to answer. she prolly won't be with us much longer, so we will last.. NO CC, that was not a threat, we are not going to bump her off..

I hear thumping on the floor above me.. Annie must be home.. I hope she brought donuts..

I am invited to two different places to play Texas Hold 'em.. I guess I must be the "easy money" guy.. Tip: If you look around the poker table and cannot see who is the "fish",, You're it.. happens to me all the time..

got company coming in a little while, so I had better get upstairs and help clean up the kitchen..

..........jiminwisc...........

Beautiful morning to sit outside and drink coffee! And we did. So now it is approaching lunchtime already! I really liked that chicken tractor tractor! Watched the video and DH even came over to take a look.
I agree, such a shame about that house! IT is better than mine. Definitely the garage is better! They are probably going to build some giant modern monstrosity that will tower over their neighbors' houses and the lake...I think they are from IL! (
hide.gif
did I say that?) I have a real problem with people doing that for sure...I hope someone will take them up on the offer of the house...wish it was closer; I could use a little "get away place" in the back corner of our property!

I have to work at the Pines this afternoon. IT is their "Pignic" for the summer. A place in town is the caterer and does a roast pig with all the sides. My daughter is coming to work with me to serve up the dinner and keep the line moving! That is what my boss told me...just keep the line moving and NO CHITCHAT! Like I would....LOL!

Gotta go out and check the garden and then get those green peppers cut up. Going to soak some cukes too (to make the spears) Hey DrH...didnt your recipe say to cut 1/4" off of the blossom end and then soak? Hmmmm...is this what I am doing wrong? Cutting BEFORE soaking?
ep.gif
What say you?

I have absolutely no comment on choosing cucumbers, heads OR crocks...you people must not have enough to do is all I can say....

Have a great day and enjoy this coolness! Terri O
