I'm repeating a post that I put in a different forum thread just because I think my Wisconsin Cheeseheads might reply quicker. I have a 3 week old silkie chick with a cross beak. He/she is eating ok now and growing with the others, but I guess this genetic defect can get worse with time. Some one had mentioned that the deformed beak needs to be trimmed. Does anyone know how I do that? I want to give the little guy a chance. I also sent a photo to Cackle Hatchery so they know about the defect.

What a cutey! Feed her in a deep dish with soft food. I dare say trimming will not help her. However you can take a fingernail clip and trim just a bit off the end and shape ;ile a beak as you would any other chicken that does not keep their beak sharpened. The main thing is to get her enough to eat.

Way to go Tiki

Finally got a day dry enough to finish off the garlic. Pretty good crop this year. Got the onions hung up to dry (used to braid them when I had more time on my hands

I will take the prudent road and not discuss cukes, crocks, etc. Really people! They're going start putting an R rating on our thread!!!!

Still researching the Blue Comb but the more I read the more it looks like that's what my girls have. Oh well, such is the world of animal husbandry. Not quitting on my girls yet though.

Now, I have 4 channels of Olympic coverage, think I'll see if I can find second round of dressage

I looked up blue comb in the chicken health handbook we have, according to the information: the book talks about it being a disease related to drinking water and can be a stress triggered by lack of water but for the most part the cause is unknown and rare in chickens. If you have the book it gives more information to read or see if you can check out a copy from the library

Another Busy day Here... sorry Gaelio but a cross beak like that is going to suffer and starve as it gets worse...and it will..you will see it not grow and suffer...while that seems harsh, prolly culling now will be best....do what you think is best, just sayin.

I had jennie stop at culvers on the way up for a little extra stuff for the chicken on the grill here, for the flavor of the day...caramel cashew for desert... broccoli with peas and mashed spuds from home grown spuds...and a old fashioned....I'll make you one next year at the bash bl4, when you're stayin over with the rest of the cheeseheads core!

Time for chicken...later...bigz

thank you Roo

that had the whole research thing and they stated that there is no known cause for BC but it occurs most often during times of temps above 85o and high humidity. Water stress was NEVER a problem for my girls once I got them but they 100% fit the profile of birds most susceptible that they listed because of prior living conditions (their prior conditions weren't good enough to be called battery!

) The prognosis isn't that bad though, especially for the way my girls, except maybe one, are handling it. Every site I checked recommended the birds be given molasses but no body said how!

On my way to Amazon and check out that book you mentioned
