Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Terri O Well I guess I have that going for me! LOL I sure hope I didnt over do it with the amounts (hard to see where rubber plunger was compared to marksings.

The momma does look like shes part mille fluer!! Gorgous. And I just LOVE the expressios on mom hens...many human moms could learn from the parenting skills of the chickens! Will be fun to see what the chicks look like.

(Cracking up here and my better half is showing me his make up kit...mirror and all. Telling me "You think you girls have kewl stuff look at this" I look and hes got camo stuff all over his face holding a lil mirror compact with green brown and black so he doesnt have to wear a face mask. Hes been stuck up in a tree for the past hour since sunset with a bunch of deer at the base of his tree stand. Probably attracted to the make up job.

Ive spent way to much time online today researching Faverolles. I would really like to breed these as there are so low numbers of these beautiful birds. However, I dont think I have it in me to cull some because they dont hate the "perfect" this or that (toes, coloring, feather confirmation, etc) that is ideal to pass on. Im in a quandry here.....I have all winter to 'ponder' on this however :p

I was not crabby ,, but the best way to get me that way is to keep telling me that I am..
Don't pay any heed to UnkaDan,, If there is trouble brewing,, you can bet he is in there just a stirrin'.........

as long as I can't do much to the tractor, I took the carb off and replaced the choke cable holding screws with new screws..

the neighbor lady showed up to buy some young barred rocks.. I cannot tell the young ones from the old gals when they are free ranging.. I told her to come back in the morning and I will keep them locked up for her..

TerriO, if there is frost on the plants in the morning, THEN you spray the plants until the frost washes off.. It does work..
If the sun melts the frost off, then they will burn and die..

Very sleepy, have to teach in the morning... A quick update: I got 5 eggs today, 2 shell-less eggs, and a tiny pullet egg, about the size of my fingertip. It was absolutely tiny and adorable!

Or smileys either.........

I actually spent most of the day outside today. At least the weather wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The wind wasn't as brisk as yesterday so that helped alot.

I moved birds around today. That alone is worthy of another chapter of "As The Egg Turns", no?

Stella, the Dom hen from Bf4, has been in with Jack & the rabbits and has only mingled with the flock briefly on a few supervised occasions. Today I let her & Jack out in the carport for quite a few hours while I was out there. I only wanted to let her out, but Jack had other ideas. (I keep Jack separated from the rest of the flock because he & Moose fight like the dickens). So the lav roos decide to come in with some of the hens & I wait for all he!! to break loose. Nothing. Whew! Then Moose comes in. Again, nothing. Deep exhale. Jack was on high alert but like the ash hole that he is, he decided to push the limits and skirt past Moose. Again, nothing. Has he!! frozen over? I can't believe my good fortune. So I fling open the carport door to let the sun in (yeah, right) & give everyone the option to go outside (Jack & Stella are not yet versed on the new "auto chickie" door. They only know the regular door). So everyone is mingling out in the yard nice & peacefully when all of a sudden the roos start screaming their alarm & a ton of hens come piling in the doors. At first I thought one of them just scared another one, but as I turned around, just on the other side of the run fence I see wings flapping. There was a falcon that landed right on the grass just outside of the run & then took off. As I was doing a head count, I spotted everyone but Jack, but then I heard him stumbling around in the empty rabbit hutch I leave out in their run for just such an occurrance. Darn good thing that old codger is still fast & smart.

Later, DH came to check on us & I was telling him about the incident when the darn thing returned for another flyover. This time he landed on the ground on the other side of the run, closer to the house. That thing is really starting to tick me off, especially since I want to let Jack be part of the rest of the flock now. I don't have any sort of roof on my run, but I do have quite a bit of cover. Tomorrow we will be working on more hiding places, I guess.

Oh, the reason I wanted to move Jack out with the flock is because someone dumped a rooster out by my neighbors barn, and being the only people around that have chickens, naturally we have to take the poor little guy in.

At least he is healthy & a friendly little sweetie. Someone must have handled him a lot because he is so calm & lets you pick him up. I had him quarantined in the garage for a month, wormed & dusted him before moving him out to visit the flock in a spare rabbit hutch. Well, he fights like the dickens with every single one of my roos, so he is going to be replacing Jack in the rabbit area. So far he is loving it. And he has Stella to snuggle with at night since she isn't ready to try out the coop just yet.

Evidently she gave DH the batting eyelashes & he fell for it. Oh, well. There is always tomorrow night.

Oh, and we finally put a saddle on poor, bald Ezmerelda, but that is another chapter.

Sweet dreams, all!

Hi all!

Yea, I'm trying to figure out what to do about water dishes too. Last year I just used heated dog dishes but am going to have to do something else this year. Any ideas as to how to heat that big plastic waterer?

One of my hens has prolapsed vent. I don't give much hope for her though. I cleaned her up, sterilized it, goopped it up with "green goop" and shoved it back. The thing is, I didn't see it until lock up and I think others my have been picking on it.

It was bleeding. Have her in a kennel near some heat in the coop. Which brings me to another issue. My youngest son and DH decided to "reclaim" the hot tub room.... and the hot tub. Yes, it will be nice to have fixed and to use it, but, it's been my hospital and brood area for the last 2 years. We have no basement and the garage is packed! "They" don't want anymore chickens in the house.

So I have to figure out how to tend to sick chickens in an unheated coop all winter!
