ANGIEBUBS~I have the same 3 gal. waterer from FF (mine has the 2 stage heater tho). I always fill mine thru the bottom plug, it's just so much easier. Only take it apart from the base for cleaning. I think mine may be from a different manufacturer than yours. (There were two brands when I bought mine last spring).
JIM~never tried to hang mine, just built a base for it to sit on. Never trusted the look of that handle to hold that much weight without something breaking or sagging. Besides, mine is the plug in kind (as mentioned above) and I could just see a chook deciding that swinging cord looking like something fun!
Just came in from setting the waterer up to be plugged in for tonight. We got lucky with the temps last night but we will hit the high teens for sure tonight. Put plastic on the inside of the east coop window while I was at it but I think I am going to need to put the heavier plastic on the outside as well. Too hard to get a good seal around all the window hardware and that side of the coop has nothing to block the wind. The other, larger, south facing window is a new double self-insulated type so I don't need to do anything to it and it can still be opened if extra ventilation is needed.
Have a question. Do any of you put anything over your pop holes? Mine is weather stripped and ALWAYS closed at night but do you put anything over them to hold heat in the daytime?
We Built a lean too to go over the pop door so wind can't blow in, but it didn't work as well as I had hoped, it kinda funneled the crazy wind right around and in the coop anyway, should have made a door on it instead of making just 1 open side, where they went down the ramp and out.
Well anyway Good morning all, I didn't get here all weekend, we were busy, rearranging chickens and puppies and finished up the garden, except my Carrots......argggh wondering if I will ever have time to dig them out b4 the ground freezes.
CindLady, I got me a cute little package on Sat. from you and love it sent you a PM..........
Sorry About the sick chickies, hope they are all better soon, I have a couple girls who are sneezing, hope it clears by itself, probably the quick change over to cold weather.
The chickens do not like their run anymore since the cold and wind started, they have been hanging out in the yard under the tree's and in my garage, so we figured if they ain't gonna use the run anyway we would convert it for the puppies, so we closed in the pop door hung the ramp up over it, finished the 1 open side, and gave it to the puppies for a shelter, they didn't seem to like the dog houses, even though they are large, apparently not large enough for them both to be in.......LOL they have been sleeping in the new one though, which is a 5 ft long, x 4 foot wide leaning roof, 3 1/2 ft,high in the front and 17 inches in the back. ...... we tried to cover the wood with a tarp to keep out the drafts where the boards overlap, but Max my trouble maker basically chewed it up the first night........... he is such a little ****......loves to dig holes too.... but cute and lovable non the less. He will grow out of it......... he is after all just 5 months old and still a puppy, though by looking at them you would think they were full grown........just huge puppies, I will take some pictures today to show you all....
I suppose I better go back and see how much I missed over the weekend, I only read the 10 pages it said I was behind, but Adam was here last night so I know I missed much more than that.......... later all.......Kim
Well I didn't miss as much as I thought everyone must have been busy this weekend, TerriO that hen and babies are adorable,. I want that hen she is cute and smugg as a bug.with them little ones.....I keep hoping for a broody that will hatch me some eggs, but my girls tried to do that 2 late in the season, so they sat on plastic eggs until they just gave up...... maybe next spring they will try again......... I have 1 new pullet a BO that keeps trying to make a clutch in my horses field, in the high weeds, found 3 eggs in it yesterday. and I see she is out there again this morning. Now that everyone is running loose, around here except the roosters, they will have plenty of places rto try to be moms......
Jim I have aquestion about my boys how young have you butchered cockerals? I have the big ones who are ready, but I also have my last 6 hatched end of June, that I really would like to do at the same time, they are not really very big though and I'm wondering just how much meat they might have at only 3 months??????
I just don't wanna mess around butchering roo's in December....... cuz that is what I was planning to do....... I usually wait till they are 22 weeks.......... what do ya think?
