Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Morning Silly Chicken People! Vic rained pretty much all day here not hard but a good soaker. Think this morning I'll get a row weeded out then plant. Sure hope the eye MD has better news for your DH.

! Wasn't too surprised when dragging trees out that the ground was just dust underneath the top soil. They said there was a 6" deficit this year. TO didn't know that just touching bread could affect you WOW! Glad your feeling better! I know L can't even look at strawberries without breaking out in hives. MLH man SG has a strong broody instinct. CC thanks for the offer on Moose eggs

Something for Dan and Jim but it's gone. Don't know what's going on with FT? Must have been something I said.

Might go to the woods today too early to tell. Had to order the recoil clutch for the splitter, it'll be in tomorrow. Having gas issues with it when it gets down to a third of a tank it gives me grief. Got an inline filter for it yesterday and will drain and clean the tank today it looks clean but might be a chunk of crap in it that impedes the flow when there's less fluid pressure in it.

Could add more bedding to the coop too.... Guess I'm not going to make it to the woods.

Good Morning All,

Our eggs are on day 20 today! The students are getting very excited. One of them saw an egg rock back and forth for about 20 seconds and they thought it was pretty cool. Out of the 12 eggs we started, 8 have made it to lockdown. When we last candled them (before lockdown) they were all moving around and they looked to be right on track.

This is my first hatch in a homemade incubator so we'll see what happens. I know there is no way to predict but just for fun, and based on everyone's experiences, how many do you think will actually make it out of the hatch?

I will update when we have some pipping action!

Morning all!

DrHa~thank you for the kind words for my DH. Things turned out great!

His eyes are good and his back has heeled (no more attacking sweet fern with a sickle, silly boy) so he plans on going after bambi today

It rained here too most of the p.m. actually wound up with over 1/3" ! Garlic going in today or tomorrow. Had the beds prepped already in hopes we would get a bit of moisture. Speaking of which, another dusting of snow this morning. Girls seem to be handling it well. Haven't let em out yet this a.m. tho because it's still below freezing and the chick isn't quite fully feathered yet.

BTW~I thought production hens (aka special blacks) weren't supposed to go broody???? I caught Soup yesterday crawling in under the ramp to the roost in the coop, huh??? Checked later and she had a herself almost buried in straw and softly cluck, cluck, clucking away
th.gif
. She kept popping in and was up on the roost last night, but???? She stopped laying last week just figured she was the last to go into full molt (has been dropping a feather or two). If she goes in to full broody butt mode now, she is just going to stay parked

Well, better get out and turn them loose. Good chickies won't do their "cecca dump" inside the coop!

Had lots more to say but still on my first cuppa so I can't remember. Good thoughts to all and condolences for losses.

BTW~where is Frenchie????

for DH's eye's! Might be going through some crap with mine soon. VA said there's a lot of pressure in mine and might be a precursor to cataracts. Thought the reason they water all the time was allergies. Nope. Got the garlic in and covered plus a lot more. Found a nice chunk of crap in the splitter gas tank just the right size to plug the feed hole, hope that's it. taf thinking if you had 8 viables you should get 8 chicks. Don't remember how old your students are but just wait until you start getting some pipping they won't be able to concentrate on anything else. Such a cool learning experience for them! Think I'll go knock the cleaning of the shed off the list. Gonna need a new list soon!

They are GED students so mostly 18-20 years old, some a little older, most from urban backgrounds. They still think it's really cool, they've never really been exposed to this kind of thing. We've got sporadic cheeping in the bator. Egg #11 has a small v shaped pip on it :)

Good morning everyone! Thinking about my first winter with the chickens and looking for some advice on how to keep them warm. My coop is off the ground with a run underneath and mesh as the floorwith pullout drawers. i have seen that some people have said that you should put lots of bedding for warmth. I can't because then I can't clean it. There is no real entry for me to get in

Just curious as to what is the best way to winterize? I woul rather not put a heater in there if possible.
Still learning....

good cold morning in the north country

I really need to find some gloves, 3 sessions outside working on things and my hands are freezing,,,figured typing would loosen up the ole joints,,,

judge I remember you had a pic posted of the coop,,,,please repost and maybe we can make suggestions

roosters pulled an escape this morning, 3 are back in,,,,,I was pi$$ed then thought about Jim and Annie with 30,,,not so bad having only 6 here,,,lol

speaking of Jim,,,we need an Ollie update!

DrH IF you get all your lists done come on up mine seem never ending this time of year

bbl,,,,need some HOT lunch

Hi Unkadan~ yep, I was out working in the coop and just from running back and forth my hands and toes are froze! That wind just won't lay down and it's just not getting above 40o so the windchill must be a doozy

However,

got the light and the timer put in in nothing flat so I went on to see if I could get the remote sensor to work thru the coop wall so the base could pick it up in the house, AND (drum roll please), it worked on the first try!!! So now I have my timer set so that it pops on for 4 hours in the morning and back on for a while in the evening and I can check on the temp in the coop without leaving my comfy kitchen. Boy, do I love modern technology!!!

Got the Valbazen in the mail yesterday but the instructions with it might as well be written in Greek! Oh well, I'm just going to do a Google and find somewhere that speaks english. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get them to take it or is the best approach to just "down the hatch". I am aware the stuff is supposed to taste really nasty. Also, is Noodle too young to worm? He/she (still don't know) turned 8 weeks today.

DrHaHa~I still have to get the run closed in somehow so if you get really bored with nothing to do and happen to get up this way.............................

Windy Afternoon All... Thanks for the nice suprise Cind, that was a really nice gesture. It will go to good use here!

Here is almost 6 minutes of the race ending and a interview with #14 who needs a new job I'm thinkin. Hope you enjoy Robin. Stupid puter pasted on top.

Judge, simply stack bales around the outside or wrap with a tarp or plastic...just keeping the cold wind out should be fine.

Sorry to hear about any eye problems...nothing but the best wishes for good sight.

Later bigz
