Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning all! I saw a cool idea ( i think) For a heated chicken waterer using a cookie tin and a light bulb. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/11/make-cookie-tin-waterer-heater-under-10.html# Any thoughts? Going to try to scrape the poo off the mesh in the coop today, and get my hubby to start thinking about where we are going to put the goats and horse this winter. Right now they are with the chickens, but that will definitely NOT work for the winter. O h- I wanted ask- why are you all putting light bulbs in the coops? Is it for eggs, or for heat?

Love, love the chicken picture- she is really beautiful!!
I asked my hubby if I could have that coop for Christmas, and he said. "Absolutely sweetheart, you deserve it!" You can all come over this spring to look at it

Hope you all have a great Thursday!

Miss Stella's saddle is from HENSAVER.COM. It was stupidly pricey, but I just felt so bad for Stellas back! She has scar tissue even, so feathers won't grow back in places. But it was nice to see some feathers come back under the saddle.

CC... I showed my hubby Stella's picture and he whined again he misses her. really? He talked at her may be once a week, if that. I told him its going to be wonderful to hatch out Stella babies in the spring! I said her personality will go into her babies. With Moose being such a good boy, we can't go wrong!

GUESS WHAT?! I found a BLUE egg in the coop this morning!!! So excited! It's a first pullet egg for Ameracauna/EE pullets hatched in late April/Early May. I tell you, my pullets ALL lay late. There was a little blood smeared on it, but I read that can happen with the first couple sometimes. But I am absolutely thrilled to have another girl laying. It's taking forever to get them all laying. Good thing I am hatching chicks in October, because they won't start laying until May...

I better get back to the drudge duties....

Harvest Evening To All.... Im not out there, but am in here!
Busy morning....went up to the chain saw store and broke out the checkbook for a stihl MS271, it was $30 more than the farm boss MS291, but worth the few bucks for a better saw in my opinion.
Then off to the barber for a haircut. It's free and you pay for the gossip.....other folks are seeing the local lone wolf too.

Then off to the woods to bag a nice 8 pointer. Perfect shot and a down deer just under 50 yards from the stand. I'll be busy skinning and cutting starting in the morning.....quess I'll have to wait to try out the new saw. Dang, never thought I'd be missing a day of cutting wood.

Nice pics thanks for sharing them....that coop is just wrong someway. Can anyone say RIPOFF!

Tomski....glad to see you back. Wasen't real far from you when I was bear hunting, compared to here anyway. I love the small towns ...everyone knows you arent a local when you stop by. The good old boys were really nice with helping to register the bear (one needs to remove a certain tooth and certain 2" piece of ribs). It's all for the aging, which they (DNR) let you know later with the results.... nice to have help, just sayin.

My one new pullet is laying a egg everyday. Kinda funny...they remind me of pheasent eggs.

Prolly gonna allow the hens a rest...no additional lighting here for now. Might need to later on before the long days of spring for hatching eggs...not sure yet with the decision. The timers work great for lighting.

Fingers crossed for Donnie Boy...give him a hug for me Doc...tell him I said get better soon.

Come on French Toast...you're killing us!

Everyone sure has lots of good ideas on here. That's one of the things I love most about this thread. Everyone helps each other out.

Ang, I am just so glad both you & your DH made the cut. I just found out today my cousin got the axe at her job after 12 years. They got a new boss in her dept. and apparantly she told my cousin that she wasn't qualified to do her job. After 12 years?????? And that isn't even the kicker. Then the boss won't even let her go to her locker to get her purse. How the he!! are you supposed to go home without your car keys???????? Wow, I would have been POed! Who am I kidding? I am.
somad.gif

Sorry about that. Don't mean to be a bummer. I'll

now.

Doc, you had me chuckling about getting locked in the coop. So glad you carry your phone with you. I hope everyone does. You just never know when you might need it. Sending best wishes for Donny.

Good point Vic. That coop should at least have an auto waterer and an auto door too, for that insane price tag. And be about 1,500 sq. ft.
roll.png
You are most welcome. I'm glad if I could help. Sounds like you did a great insulating job. Your chickies should be fine.

Sorry you still aren't feeling good, Terri. What kinda colds do you get that last 3 months?
ep.gif
Sounds more like one of my sinus infections. Hope you feel better soon.

Judge, if I had any clue what page it was on, I'd direct you back in this thread to last year around this time. Seemed like everyone was making or talking about those cookie tin waterers. Terri & FT both made some. Sure do miss Frenchie.

Some people add light to extend daylight hours for their egg laying, others use it for winter heat.

Bigfam, congrats on the blue egg! That must have been exciting to find. Just remind DH of him missing her so much when you hatch out a dozen mini Stellas.
wink.png
:But honey, you missed her so much......."

Bigz, thank you so much for posting the link.
hugs.gif
I can't even say what I'm thinking.
duc.gif
Congrats on the deer. Didn't you bear hunt somewhere near Townsend, or was that last year?

Not much new here. Chickies are all good. They've got the new door all figured out for a while now. Some of the pullets have been laying eggs on the hay bales.
roll.png
They'll figure it out. Better get to bed. Sweet dreams, all!

Hi all!

Only 2 pages? Wow... allot of MIA's!

Stella looks like a BOSS! lol
wink.png

Yeah, I was thinking that too about that coop. Outside and under for feed and water? For that price it should have running water, auto feeder and auto door! And coop cams! Jeez, think what kind of coop we all could come up with for that price! Oh... if you you saw video, she said production chickens lay every 12 to 16 hours!
ep.gif
I don't even think the production farms that have light 24/7 lay quite that often!

DrH... LOL still working on a kitty photo shoot! gee, when your doing Donny's chores are we going to see you at all?

Bf4m... congrats on the blue egg!

BigZ... congrats on the deer and the saw! A dilemma I wish I had! LOL

TO.... hope you feel better soon!

Finally got the coop set up for the turkeys! They still don't have a pop door but they have a hole to go in and out. I know they do OK in the cold, but I feel better giving them a place to get out of the cold rain. Also it will be easier to feed and water now.

Well, got to finish up and get to bed.... Night ALL!

Good Chilly Morning Everybody! 22* here. Donny went for his pre-op yesterday and goes for surgery next Wed. Nobody can do anything right except him. The cows will have a round bale and if they run out another guy that he helps all the time will come over and get them another one. I'll only be filling the water barrels, feeding the chickens, gathering eggs, and draining the hoses. Oh and throwing wood in his furnace a couple of times a day. But I'm sure I won't do it right seeing as how I've never done anything like that before.
gig.gif
The thing that will take the longest is seeing him he likes to BS. And I like to listen. Bigz don't think he'd take to being hugged. Probably shoot me. But I'l tell him the chicken people are all thinking of him. Congrats on the 8 ptr and the new saw! Stopped at the place I bought the Husq T435 from and got kinda PO'd. Told him I didn't like the handle set up because I couldn't get any leverage. Told him I could see using it hanging from a tree and using it one handed to trim with but it has to be real sharp to use it to cut smaller trees up with for any length of time. He said he had a lot of trade in saws and really didn't want to take in any more. Paid over $300 for it last June and would have taken $150 on a trade. After spending that and $1600 on the mower thought he could help me out. Said I'd be better off selling it outright.
somad.gif
Called about the recoil clutch at 4:00 yesterday it was came in but didn't feel like going to get it b4 5. Will do that after some time in the woods today. Going to stop at the Stihl dealer and see what they have for limb saws. The T435 is nice and light and runs great but I just hate the handle. Enough rant! Judge as I mentioned a few posts back I built a waterer heater out of some scrap 2x12's and a piece of aluminum sheeting I had, same thing as the cookie sheet heater. Started out with a 25 watt bulb and ended up with a 60 watt to keep the water from freezing. Worked great! CC thanks for the nat. flea remedies! Ya when the wind blew the door shut I felt pretty stupid. Was glad I had the cell and L was home. Really didn't want to have to crawl through a window.
old.gif
Ow ow ow. Vic don't think your broody will stay that way long, it's pretty much bred out of them. TO hope your feeling better and it doesn't go full blown snot drizzlin green lipped on ya. Hope the DS gets the job! BF4me congrat on the new blue! Cind tell that kitten to grow up! Taz is driving us crazy! Cries all the time demanding much more attention than normal. Laura was worried that she might attack the kitten but I think she'll mama it. Probably start lactating.
lau.gif
She really misses Bob. Too. Got the wood shed filled and the shed cleaned out. If I didn't have so much "good stuff" I could get both tractors in there. I was looking at it and thought gee I could get both tractors in there then turned around and looked at all the stuff that had to go back in there yet.

WOW!!!! 15o!!!!!

What happened to autumn???? My poor chookies! Do know that at least at shoulder level (where I have the thermometer remote mounted) the lowest the temp got in the coop was 34o and the heater in the waterer works!

Just came back in and every body was quiet and looked a little cold but otherwise good. Momma was stuffed back in the "nest" under the roost ramp with Noodle and I could see she was parked on an egg but Soup was really wanting in there herself!!!! Ok, so I think I got this figured out. Momma is laying in that corner and Soup is trying to sit on her egg! (don't think Soup has started laying again yet) Silly chooks. At least CrockPot still knows where her eggs belong. I picked up poor bare butt Crockpot and held her inside my coat for a bit to warm her up she seemed to really appreciate it. Got to go to Foster & Smith today and get the Nu-Stock so I can give her all most bare bottom (but getting better) a good coating.

DrH~good thoughts and prayers to you and Donny. (me being kind about getting locked in your own chicken coop
