Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Does anyone in Wisconsin have any or know where I can get any Black copper Marans? I live near Eau Claire. Hopefully someone can find a seller near me. I am looking for hens and can't seem to find any.
I am in Menomonie and looking for them too!... I can find some, but I only want a couple hens, not 25 chicks!! I did find some cockoo marans on craigslist in Eau claire. :-) good luck~!!!

Ang, congrats on the new coop cameras! You are going to just love them. My DH got me some for X-mas a couple years ago and hooked them right into our TV, so I have my own private "chicken channel".

Mel, I need a nap after reading about your adventures.

Cind, that dinner sounds delish! Yum!

Judge, as Jim said, animals do eat snow if they are desperate, but nothing compares to a reliable water source. My birds seem to drink more in the winter also. (Excellent water/livestock info, Carol!)

Could you run an extension cord out to them? You could get one of those power stakes for Christmas decorations to plug into the extension cord then have 6 outlets. They also have a built in timer & photo cell if you need it. Congrats on the new soon-to-be bigger kitchen. I'm jealous. Care to share the flock block recipe?

kjg! Hope you like it here and visit often. Is your dog dish metal or plastic?

DrH, glad you got some sleep. Sounds like you need it.

And you just whine away. Haven't we all at one point or another? Never fear, we're here for ya!

And L too. I hope they get her fixed up quick.

Jim, great tips/ideas about designing a kitchen. I like your pics too.

Dare I say "nice buns"?

H&R, so sorry to hear about your pheasant. I hope your hatch goes well.

Terri, what is that black thing on your DSs head? A tail????

Cuckoo is the striped pattern?

RIR! Hope you like it here & visit often as well!

Mazo, predicting when it will be warm enough out? In WI? Really?????

Can't help you there. This past spring, they went out in March.

Not much new down here. Still have the energy of a gnat but I forced myself to get some things done around here today. Critters are all doing good. Jasmine has been having trouble getting up from a laying position lately due to arthritis and an old back injury from a previous owner

so I finally got the bright idea to put a heating pad in her cage (that is in the house).

BUT before you all tell me how spoiled she is, she has been improving. She barely has a hard time anymore!

Whoo-hoo! Now she's back to being grumpy, at least when I have to clean her cage, the lil piglet.

Guess that's all, at least for now.

The dog dish we have is metal. I have a plastic one too that the dogs are using. A friend of mine just happend to want to get rid of them.

Where did you find the chicks? How much are they? And I am the one on craigslist that has the Cuckoo Marans for sale. I called and left you a message. Are you still interested?

Hi! Sorry I missed your call! I did get your message. I was searching online yesterday and found lots of eggs to hatch and some chicks offered by some of the breeder sites. sorry i didn't write them down :-( I did see a post this moring from someone in TX that will have chicks later and someone in Arkansas with eggs......
How much do you want for your Marans and can you tell me about them? Are they laying? If so, how dark are their eggs?
I looked at soooo many ads and posts, did you have ameracaunas too?

No I don't have americanas. I have cuckoo marans only. They are $12 each and some have just started laying and some haven't started yet. They are really docile. you go to pet them and they spread out there wings and wait for you to pet them. I have been getting 4's and 5 on the egg color scale ( you can look that up on google.

Mmm, breakfast. Omelet with beef/broccoli/waterchestnuts/onions from last night's dinner and colby jack cheese. Heaven.

I have 18 or so BCM eggs coming, can't wait to have Marans back in the flock. The last of my hens aged out this year and the rooster went away for flaring at my kids. That's a no no here. I miss my dark brown eggs, though, so hoping to get some nice layers to replace.

Good morning! Nothing much to do about frostbite; get some more ventilation to reduce the humidity in your coop and it shouldnt happen any more unless you have very fine points on your birds' combs...some say you can put Vaseline on to prevent frostbite...sounds messy to me!

I read so much and now cant remember much of anything...stayed up way too late and was woken this morning by the snow plow. The candy turned out great last night and the turkey is done too. Now I need to debone it and figure out what I am going to use in place of Lipton Onion soup mix...(it has wheat) So I can make the cream gravy. I think I will toss together a baked bean casserole too.; then a veggie tray along with chips and dip and chips and salsa. That part I am looking forward to...cleaning the house, not so much!

Carol I didnt know about those breeders either. I see that they are coming to the swap in Jefferson though. I wish she had more info on there (and pics) of her wins at the shows. Do you know where the place is? I think I might know who the girl is. How many kids are named Persephone?

Cind you just go right ahead and whine! We are here for ya. Everybody needs to once in a while...you must go fairly crazy living there with all those MEN! I say stop walking on eggshells and just be yourself. It is your house too!

Well, I think I need another cuppa and maybe some food too...I think I ate too many pieces of candy! NJoe--I want to see you in those fur hats at the chickenfest! We are pretty early in the spring this year so you might be needing them!
Have a good one all! TerriOlotstodoandnodesiretodoit

ask and ye shall receive,,

in 1/2 cup of warm water, dissolve 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon yeast..

there are still 3 more batches in the oven, but this should give you an idea of what we were up to today..

in 1/2 cup of warm water, add 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon yeast.. set aside until it foams up nicely.. prolly will take about 15 minutes..

mix together 1 egg, 1/3 cup oil, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup sugar and just slightly less than one cup of milk.... beat it until the egg is well mixed with all the ingredients.. (then come back) and add exactly 2 cups of flour.. mix until everything is well mixed, then add the yeast mixture.. now add slightly less than 2 cups of flour.. mix until you have a ball of dough that is sticky to the touch, but does not stick to you..

put the dough onto a floured board and knead it until it feels like a baby's bottom..

put into a greased bowl and let it rise until about double in bulk.. (about 45 minutes)

divide the dough into (I made 15) pieces... roll each piece into a ball and place into a greased 9 x 11 cake pan..

I used grape seed oil,, you can use whatever oil you prefer...

I also use a kitchen aid mixer with a bread hook...

bake at 375 for about 20 minutes,, ovens differ, so yours might take longer,, or less time..

AHA--I KNEW I didnt read it at first!!! TO
aha back at you.. the eta is where I added what kind of mixer I used..
I know this will be hard on you,, but admit it,, you made a mistake.. CC saw it the first time..

good morning, byc has gone back to not sending me a notification when somebody posts.. luckily I keep a notification in reserve just for that purpose..

looks like we ended up with about 4 inches of the slippery white sh!t.. hooray, I get to go play in the snow.. I think I will plow before I turn the birds loose.. they don't know enough to stay out from under the tires..

I had a roll with Peanut Butter on it for breakfast.. Yummm..

TerriO is right,, lower the humidity in your coop to help prevent frostbite.. Or add heat to keep it just above freezing.. I keep my coops at about 35F.. I use the thermo cubes I bought at Menard's, with a small electric heater.. it doesn't really heat the coop, but it takes the bite out of the air.. I open the doors during the daytime when I let the birds loose, and turn off the heaters..

once it reaches below zero, I will keep the birds in,, maybe I will let the geese out,, the cold doesn't affect them ,, and besides, they have to take their daily baths..

well, enough talking, time for action.. bbl.......
