Okay I need some advice.
We are in for some colder weather here this upcoming week, with 0 to -5 or more and maybe more with a wind chill.
I have my little truck I am driving daily but we don't have a car port OR a garage.
My thoughts are two fold, bring the battery in to keep it warm. OR put an under tank heater OR a clamp light under the hood of the truck, tuck a horse blanket
around the hood and then cover the whole vehicle with a car cover.
Ideas? thoughts? Yes I know I am bat $*** crazy... I own chickens!!
LOL
And I had to share a really funny event that occured this afternoon.
I am a wuss with my horses, I am blanketing 2 of the 4 right now when the weather hits really cold. So with this night and the next week I put heavier blankets on the 2 horses.
I was feeding the youngest who is 6 and she has a nice thick coat of fur but I decided I would see if she would allow me to put a blanket on her.
Now, this mare is not broke, has never had a blanket on or close to her unless its when she is playing or hanging out with the other two that do have blankets on.
I do put a lead rope on her and tie it, when I give her a little bit of grain, mostly to occupy her and to keep her near her hay pile while I mess around with blankets on the mare that is the low one
on the totem pole.
So I grabbed a blanket that would likely fit her and go up, sweet talk to her, have her sniff it, I rub it on her back and shoulder. She does this whilst munching on her hay, now this particular blanket is what is called a "closed front" which means it has no straps or buckles on the front, it is a solid piece of fabric, which has to go over the horse's head in order to put it on, kinda like a t-shirt or turtle neck. So I rub it on her neck and I drape the blanket across her back and butt.. she seems completely serene.
I pull the opening over her head and pull it down to her chest. I then reach under her belly and rub that, grab the strap there and tug on it, she is simply eating and not seeming to care. I then rub the blanket so she can hear the gortex like fabric, rub the back of her legs and other areas, as there are two leg straps that have to be put on from the trailing edges of the blanket to the sides, one on each side to keep the blanket in place when she moves around.
SO I give her rubs and pats and tell her what a good girl she is, she seem soo non pulsed by it.
I undo the lead rope and walk away, tuck the hay under the tarps and watch the horses for a few minutes...
WHEN .... suddenly, Jinx (the young mare) takes off, running around, not really bucking, but she did two laps in a large circle then stood there as if afraid to move... she suddenly apparently realized she had something ON.. ON HER... OMG... oh oh.. what do I do???!!! she wouldn't even put her head down as she felt the edge of the blanket at where her neck meets her chest.
I really shouldn't have laughed at her.
She seemed rooted to the spot so I got my dog to chase her, she did one lap, and went right back to nearly the same spot. So I got Lexi to chase her again.
This time she went up to Indi's feeder and finally started to eat.
I am sure she will be fine in the morning.. but man it was funny!!
I wonder if I should keep her SOO distracted when it comes time to put a saddle on her!!?? LOL
