Woo Hoo! I finally have a chick out, unzipped this morning. Its one of the NJ I set for the NYD hatch but they seem to not have gotten the memo and are a couple days late to the party.

Just went to my first Packer game two weeks ago! Packers vs. Titans! It was awesome and everyone was so awesome and friendly!

Turkey was phenomenal as usual... did Alton Brown's brined turkey.... and then a ham cooked out on the grill.... YUM! That ham tastes just like a giant lump of bacon! Made some baked sweet and russet potatoes along with steamed carrots and broccoli. Fantastic food, good company, and plenty of spirits to go around.......

I did Alton brown's brined turkey for thanksgiving and it was heavenly and gone by the Saturday morning after. Everyone would pick at it in the fridge.

I did this one too for Thanksgiving and then put it in the rotisserie for 3 hours mmmmmm it was good!

Good Morning All! In a rush here L wants to go into work at 9 to see everyone and do exercises with them so I'll run out to the BFF's and hopefully get his new lap top on line.

L's sinuses are very small and as I say she can rattle the windows on the freight train a half a mile away. Bigz hope you get the mice under control but as long as there is feed and grain you'll have them. Jim sleep thru the night.

The stress of bating kills me too that's why I'm planning on letting a broody do it next spring. TO thanks for straightening me out on the aunt/mom issues. Hope their both doing much better! There is so much great information on here. Thank you to everyone for contributing. Coming from a newbie, it is really helpful! So my girls are producing quite well, i have had 5 eggs from the 8 girls the last 3 days, bbbuuuttt now they are not sleeping in their coop with the light on. I have another little area that has a roof and lattice around it as part of their pen and now that is where they are choosing to stay. I am assuming they have had it with the light! ... any thoughts? They seem fine and happy.... just wish they would stay in their nice warm area! I guess I could lock them in. With everyone producing and seeming to be happy, not sure I should really change anything...

I ordered up my first batch of chicks for the spring ***fingers crossed***

this will be a new experience for me hubby thinks I am insane! I have 16 coming! light sussex, copper marans, ameraucana and hybrid olive eggers ssooo excited.

so another question to you all I have been just getting my feed at Fleet Farm, would I be better off at a feed store price wise and quality wise?

Had a no egg day yesterday when I checked at 3... and after dinner. Dont know if my BO is eating them or nobody laid. Been getting 3-5 eggs a day otherwise from my 12 layers. Think my new speckled sussex girls look like they are close to or at POL. Carol is going to borrow my BO egg eater tomorrow and see if she can cure her. She is my constant broody so I am kinda glad to see her go. If we have chicks at our house this spring (Olive eggers anyone...)we want to hand raise them so they are lovers. Need to work with my new Sussex trio on that. One is pretty friendly. The roo is shy but seems like some mealworms might help him out.
Glad to have the kids back at school. We so needed that routine around here. Now I need to work on cleaning my house again.
Then need to work on some meal plans. And better snacking foods. I eat pistachios and pocorn or veggies and dill dip. But need more than that to keep me away from chips etc.

Good Morning my fellow Chicken Freaks!

Well, the Holidays are over and from reading the past threads it seems like the majority of us had a fantastic season. I'm sorry for the ones with trouble on their plates (Sickness/IRS...etc.) - Things can only get better!

I had some problems with the IRS and it's not a lot of fun when you are guilty until proven innocent. I ended up having to re-file 4 separate years - to me the info was identical as the first but for some reason the second time, everything was okay. They even went so far as to put a lien on my house! Everything is good now though but those bastages at the IRS tortured me with threats via letters for over a year an a half.

Had a great time with my Daughter at Christmas - while her visit of 6 days seemed really short - It's nice to have my "quiet" house back. Although I do miss her. I think those with grown children who live out of state know exactly what I'm talking about... LOL

The additional 5 hours of light (2 in the morn and 3 in eve) have resulted in a steady 5-7 eggs a day from my eight girls. I've also been spreading about a 1/2 ice cream bucket of BOSS throughout the plowed trails in the woods every day. The hens really seem to enjoy it. They pretty much stay on the plowed areas - although I've notice a few places where they have strayed off the path and braved the deep snow to get at a fallen log...etc. They come and go as a group, staying out for only 1/2 - 3/4 of an hour at a time before they go back in the coop to warm up... They go back and forth all day until around 3:30 pm when they are in for the night.

All this talk about broody clucks...etc. sure makes me miss Bert, my Rooster... It's just not the same watching the flock. I miss Bert running back and forth trying to keep track of everybody... LOL Anybody have a Rooster - young but old enough to introduce to the flock? Bert was Americauna but I'm not too picky as long as he is realitivly calm, friendly and of course... Studly.

Good morning! (at least I didnt call you all "chicken freaks!")

Even though it is true in most cases I guess! Tomski I am sure that most of us have an extra roo or two...just find out who is closest to you and head out. You will have fertile eggs by spring I am sure.
Lots of posts to read today...thanks for having them on the only morning I am home now. Kinda getting sick of going off right away in the morning though...cant take care of stuff like I like to.

Just lost a paragraph...GGRRRR. I WAS saying that you might get a broody soon Judge, I have 4 right now but only one I am letting sit. I cant reach the nest--I think she is on duck eggs.
Congrats on the hatches and pips! Just doesnt seem like it is the New Year already! Pretty soon it will be CHICKENSTOCK time! Yes, we will need to get a thread going on that pretty soon now. Any volunteers? I can do it; but I dont want to hog the responsibility EVERY year!

On relative news...talked to my Aunt this morning and she is doing very well. She was going to go back to work today...they let her out of the hospital on Tuesday...She has to lose weight (of course) watch her blood sugar better (she has diabetes) and stop drinking regular coffee. She also has a slew of new pills to take! Speaking of deviated septums...(I like yours better BigFam) she was supposed to go in for surgery next Tuesday and will probably have to postpone now. But I am glad she had this warning!

Bigs and GR--I would not hesitate to use some poison on those rats/mice! IF you see them when you open a door you have WAY more that you think. I use Jaguar in bate stations so nothing else can get at it. When I bait I put a bucket half full of water nearby...they all go in there for a drink and drown. Then I can easily dispose of them.

One more cuppa and I have to get outside...Hey Judge you should head over to the Hatching thread or the Learning pages. I bet you could get all your questions answered with just a little reading. (not that we dont like questions...)

I do have one for you though...how is it that you live on a dairy farm and dont know what Calf Manna is? Dont they let you into the barn?

Man if I had an operation like that....still havent found the pics of my kitchen remodel BTW.

Going to ask DS to do some work around here today...anybody want to place bets if it gets done or not? I hear him rattling around upstairs...mostly cause one of the dogs goes nuts when he comes down here. Then he sits and she hops up by him! Border Collies--who the h3ll even knows what they are thinking half the time!?

OK I think I need to get moving. I hoe you got some good sleep after playing with those sassy kitties DrH! Sounds like L must be feeling lots better if she is wanting to exercise!

good morning all, I got up at 4 am watched a show on tv and went back to bed at about 7am..

I put water in the coops last night at lock up.. so I am in no hurry to let the birds loose.. I have one goose making a nest under the planer in the garage.. I would lock her out, but then we would have to search for her daily egg..

I am giving the birds a few omelets each day.. they eat them right up, but don't go crazy over them.. prolly because they are so over fed..?? I think I will go heavy on the pepper next batch..
I didn't flavor them at all this time..

Ski, glad you had a good time with DD.. I like the kind of company who I don't have to entertain.. they help themselves to the coffee and if they want a beer, they know where it is.. etc .. and yes, it is nice to get your house back to normal when they leave..

I went round and round with the IRS for twelve years.. we ended up doing all of the 12 years taxes all over.. we had a super accountant/tax preparer who helped us.. we came out OK in the end..
after fighting with them, I am completely fearless to go at it with anybody.. heaven help any clerk in a store who ticks me off.. maybe this is why I get kicked off of so many groups ??
