Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

these are today's eggs. Guess who laid the "bantam" on the left??? the "whopper" on the right is from my Black Star, Soup. She hasn't laid one that big since coming out of her molt. Cracked it to scramble and add to their evening mash because one end was soft and it contained a beautiful double yoker! Guess that explains what happened to yesterday's egg from her.

This is my mutt, Noodle at 21 weeks. Her and the rest of the girls are hangin' out in the greenhouse for a while today. You can see where I removed the floor blocks under her that the girls have turned into wallows. You can see Crockpot's bare butt as she is hunting for the dehydrated mealworms I hid in the dirt for the girls. Yes, I know, spoiled chooks.

Ok, so, now anyone have any guesses as to the mix in my mutt? Who, BTW has turned into a nice calm young lady. Guess the other girls had a good influence on her

CasI D I had no idea that whirling dervish was a chicken breed!!!!

Delisha the flock her egg came from had no cornish /and she is about 4 lbs or a bit more. All I know for sure is she cae from a large brown egg and my neighbor has 2 roos. One looks like it might be lackenvelder or ??? and is gorgeous. The other is smaller white???? maybe leghorn. her girls are a total hodgepodge. Did you notice the spots on her legs and smattering of blck spots on her feathers????

Packer Afternoon All... nice birdy pics, thanks for sharing. Vicki your pullet will lay larger eggs than she is now when she becomes a hen, and for sure after first molt. Prolly will never be xlarge but will be larger than she is laying as a pullet.

Big kettle of chili with ho-made wheat buns for game watching and a washing of a few brews.

GO PACKERS

That's OK--the people are going to the neighbors' to eat dinner and watch the game. I am staying home in the peace and quiet and will probably fall asleep.

I was looking at other areas of BYC (can you believe there are OTHER threads than this one?) and I thought some of you may be interested in it. There are recipes shared for making herbal balms and teas for you and your chickens. It is pretty new--not sure if you share your recipes Cind but maybe you can get some new ones and share some of your wisdom too?

I am heading out to do some chores...then back to reading!

Thanks for the input everyone! I think you are all right, of course, White Rock it is (at least mostly). Yes, I agree Delisha, I think she has grown into a pretty young lady too

I was just curious as to her ancestry. I was going to give her back to the neighbor who gave me the egg she came from to make room for different pullets, but now since she has found her place in the flock and no one picks on her anymore, I think she will stay right where she is. Besides, after all, she is my "first born"

Speaking of that, I think my "broody butt" (Noodles foster mom) is thinking about going broody on me again, sigh. I had already collected eggs from everyone and it warmed up so I let them all go play in the greenhouse. Checked a few minutes later and Fricassee (aka broody butt) was missing. Checked in the coop and there she was in her nest under the roost ramp, softly clucking away. Tried to shoo her out but she was glued in place so I drug her out and carried her to the greenhouse. she ran around and seemed happy. However, I looked over my shoulder as I went toward the house and there she was, HIGH TAILING it back into the coop like she was attached to a bungy cord!

She did come back out some time later and sit on the porch steps in the sun with the rest of the girls.
I'm fairly set up for her to "park" now if she decides too (I was kind of expecting it to happen again since she was so determined last spring) but I was hoping she wouldn't brood so soon!!! If she is truly going into another brood, bless her heart she can go for it. I've had them all on an increased protein diet to help them thru their molt and put a little more weight on them. They were all so thrilled with going from cage birds to discovering the outdoors, I had trouble putting any weight on them before winter. So now she is looking good and should not have any problems physically (when she decides to "stick" she really sticks!!!) The only bummer is I don't have anything to shove under her yet if she really is going into Broody Butt mode.

Well gee Vicki--it's really too early to start chicks outside anyhow! BUT--if you wait until Chickenstock I bet there would be plenty of variety to put under her. Just think if everyone brought you ONE egg...you might need more that only ONE broody! I guess I wouldnt even think of setting her until the beginning of February. By then there is a little bit of chance for some nicer weather...at least near me; you might want to even wait until March! Not saying that they cant do it...I have had many successful January snow storm hatches. It is just kind of nerve wracking if you do have to watch them die one by one...and they grow so much slooowweerrr.

I have been reading around BYC and I promised to include this here:

Vicky I am sure you will recognize this addy!
