Very sad day today. There was a fox in the yard tonight and my husband yells "coyote", runs to the gun cabinet to get the AR and couldn't find the clip. He finally got it and was ready to shoot the fox out the window and I said "stop! Its a fox." So it runs off and he procedes to tell me it's been killing my chickens because he found a bunch of feather piles in the woods. I didn't believe him and went out to the coop to find 3 hens, a rooster, 1 call drake and 3 call hens missing. Including my sweet little pastel call "Taffy". I'm not blaming this on the fox. I found my black bibbed drake under my car this morning and I had to physically catch my mallard drake and put him in the coop last night. I assume my killed chickens were sleeping under the coop. They were all bantams and I see thier feathers and blood all around the coop. But my ducks! AHHH! Where were they killed? Were they sleeping under the car and something came up and killed them? I see no evidence anywhere. So I will leave everyone in the coop for now and all predators coming in the yard have a target on their back. I may set up a trail camera tonight to see if anything comes around the coop. I cannot bear the thought of killing a fox, but this is the second time I've seen him in the last couple months so I assume he comes quite often looking for a meal.
So now I'm on the hunt for a good quality gray call duck drake, because mine is apparently dead.

And my favorite calls always get killed. SO frustrating!!!! Now all I have for hens is 4 blue fawns. I suppose I could also watch out for a pastel drake. And I was just making fun of Judi for counting her chickens every night when they aren't even free ranging. If I counted I think this could have been avoided.
