many here can attest that having your hopes up about eggs hatching is a long way to fall when it fails to happen.

I want everyone to have a chance to succeed.
Thanks

Judge, there are some GREAT tutorials about how to set up and build your own incubator on this site. Skip purchasing the fan, steal one out of an old computer. I did purchase a turner (fantastic investment) and I have a weather thermometer as well that measures humidity and the temps. Mine runs a little warm (like 1/2 a degree) so my hatches end up being early. I have had great success with mine; just make certain you clean it WELL after you use it.... in fact, before you put anything in it I would take some aquarium caulk and seal the styrofoam with the caulk so cleaning is a breeze (a thin layer should do the trick). Just make sure you do NOT seal the drain holes! They provide some air circulation. When I clean mine I first use a mild bleach solution on just about everything, then I lay it all out in the sun so the UV rays will kill off the rest of the bugs.

JJ, I am pretty certain the tadpole is a frog. Salamander tadpoles have external gills. I wish is WAS a salamander though.....

BAH! Up past 11 again! I am going to pay for this tomorrow................

good a.m.

I started putting the clothes back onto Ollie,, Of course things can't go right , right away..
I managed to twist off a bolt,, tomorrow I will go to fleet and buy the best vise grips they have..(and a shorter bolt)..

then come to find out, the grill was supposed to go back on BEFORE the hydraulic fluid tanks..
It took awhile, but I figured out how modify the grill to get it on.. more fasteners from Fleet..
soooo, i did not actually get anything accomplished .. all my time was spent in planning..

the "hatching" guy told you wrong.. a fan is a plus,, no matter where you live in this country..
and I hope you are not planning any long trips for the 21 days that you have to be there to turn the eggs.. I will admit,, for the first time or two, it is an adventure to turn the eggs by hand.. but after a few batches, you will want an automatic turner..

just a tip: when you add a fan, wire it to run constantly,, do not wire it into the thermostat circuit..

You will be getting a lot of conflicting advice from BYC.. some will say, there is no one way to hatch eggs,, that whatever works for you is the way to go.. not true.. the right way is the best way..

then there are people who say that the Hova is no good, or the LG is no good.. to them I say, send it to me and I will make them work just fine..

Hips and back (especially hips) are bad tonight. Couldn't even do dishes. Taking pain stuff, having a liquid pain killer... hitting the hay....Night All!

Did I ever mention how much I hate pain?

Poor Cind, feel better!

Judge, Jim is the hatching guru. Send your questions his way, he knows what he is doing.

Scarfing down cereal and coffee..... gotta fly!

Good Morning All! So sorry your hurtin Cindy! Hope the pain killer works! L is going back to work today light duty. She's already been warned that I'm not going to visit her in the hospital if she screws things up. Jim 1 step forward 2 back eh? Bigz sounds like the lil rats have learned something. Nothing is free!

Oh judge hope your ready for some stress. Bator hatching is truely a terrible thing to watch! Until they hatch. Jim IS the hatch master pay attention to him! I bought an LG and a turner they both came with thermo''s and I bought a hygrometer with a thermo. The 2 LG's were pretty close to each other but the hygro was colder reading. The more I hatch the better the % I get. Learning curve. The biggest increase was following Jim's instructions and sealing the seam with duct tape and using a funnel with a piece of hose to add water through the top vent holes. You might want to leave a blank space in the turner for the hose over the reservoir. Get the turner too so you can leave everything sealed up! Their another $40 but well worth it. I learned most of this from my good friends here on the cheesehead thread. Dang enablers!

Morning all,
Up at 6am, the grandson is here, so didn't get much sleep at all, he is the busiest sleeper in the world I swear he doesn't quit moving, kicking, rolling around all night, how in the world he gets any sleep ever is beyond me.... I should of slept on the couch and left him to roll around on the floor........geeeeeeeshhhhh what a wiggle butt.
So Adam is almost in Omaha, 45 miles to his drop, then over a couple towns to pick up a load going to Depere, that is due in today......... not like cutting them loads close or nothing..... if they screw around unloading or loading him he will never make it, he has 9 hours drive time back to Depere......... I'm glad he is getting some miles, though not so happy he is so wore out at the end of the day and he doesn't have much time to stop and eat.....just drive drive for 11 hours straight... worried he is gonna make himself sick......... so I been after him to eat every time he calls when he stops.......he is loosing weight and he does not need to loose 1 single lb...... unlike me....... who can afford to not eat for weeks......LOL.....

I Still haven't figured out how to bury my poor chicky in frozen ground, nor am I about to start a big ole fire in the fire pit, because I tried to clean it out yesterday, and all our snow and melting has the wood and brush froze down in big chunks..so I can't clean it out to reset the fire to start, its all a big heap of brush and wood chunks/scrap from cutting up posts and a few dieing trees from our yard last fall....so any suggestions? Adam said throw her in the freezer till spring, but my freezer is full of meat, I traded the round pen for 200 lbs of fresh grass fed beef and pork and 600 cash...... so I had all I could do to fit the meat I got in there with what I had and our chickens we butchered.......arggghhhhhhh need more freezers I guess like Jim.
Still haven't had time to build my mouse trap, darn things...... keep scaring me whenever I open the small coop it almost runs over my hand....... and I still think I have a rat, though it isn't full grown, so there are probably a lot more than the one I seen........seriously I don't know where they all come from, every year we have some, but this year seems like there is a lot of them little pests, and I refuse to use poison, because of the critters....I keep all my feed in big food safe barrels, and the only thing on the ground is what the chickens spill out of the feed dish.. I use very little corn, just in the scratch, and that is kept in the house.......so I need to build me that trap, snap traps do not work like BigZ said I think they can smell the dead one on it. Wonder if the ones they crawl down in and can't get back out work? anyone ever try those?

So anyway thats it for me just now still have to feed the puppies, and check there water.............Later all...........Kim

cin, feel better..I too have the hip issues..not fun

Jim, if you had to give one piece of advise to increase hatching percentages, what would it be? (In the giant)

Have a god day all!

so sorry to hear about all the losses, the circle of life can sure be daunting :-(

I also hope everyones aches, and pains heal quickly! Back issues are NOT fun to deal with ... my hubby had to have nerves burned so he didn't "feel" the constant pain... muscles are still tight, but at least the pain is gone..

I love the posts on the crazy chicken habbits and the hubby's perspective. My husband is pretty sure I have lost my mind :-) In fact, yesterday he posted on my FB page that he was going to look for ( my mind) in the chicken coop when he checked for eggs for me today
lau.gif

My 8 were slackers yesterday.. sure have been odd numbers of eggs these days... 4, 6, 5, 3... I added some BOSS for treats, can they make a difference in production in a negative way???

On the "chick front"... getting my first shipment.... when you get your shipment, is it just a guess as to which breed is what until they are bigger? I know sometimes you can tell..by color, or do they come with leg bands labelled?? Sorry....this will be my first "chick" experience..

Have a great day!!
