Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

KJ.........Well mine didn't come tagged and the packing peanuts in my first batch were a mystery until about 10 weeks, they were white rocks, but I also ordered Delawares so there was some confusion because my Dels were never sent, neither were my BR's... the others were pretty distinctive by color except my EE's that were wild type, and my SS chicks looked alot alike, but size made a difference because SS chicks seem to be smaller as chicks, probably due to egg size they catch up quick tho...... What did you order? I should be able to tell ya what will be hard to distinguish from what Kim

I'm bAAack!

WELCOME BACK DAN.......... WAS WONDERING WHAT YA BEEN UP TOO......
We also have frontier and I will be the first and not last to say they totally suck eggs rotten ones even...............!!!!!!!!!!! I hate our net I pay for 3 migs of spoeed and .49 most of the time, supposedly they have no idea why........... I made them pay me back some of it last year, but in all reality they owe me alot more money back, they been ripping me off since 2003 when we first got DSL out here.......Kim

I will be getting 5 Ameracauna, 5 Black Copper Marans, 5 Olive Eggers and 1 Light Sussex.....and what ever else they put in for additions...
I have been looking at pictures, so I hope to have some sort of clue when they arrive...

Also, is it true that you can sex your chicks by there wing feathers? Long, short, long, short... females and all long feathers, male??

Thanks so much for your help!!!!

In some cases feather sexing can be used but a fast feathering chick could muss that up pretty easily........... what you picked should be fairly easy to discern, except the EE and olive eggers, which I think are EE crosses or Americana crosses, they will look almost Identical, so you won't know till POL.......if ya need help sexing chicks, I'm fairly good at it...... when they are fully feathered, so send in some pictures at arrival and at 8 weeks or so....... Did you order straight run or sexed chicks?........Kim

good a.m.

one way to figure out the different kinds of chicks is,, order 3 of one kind 4 of another 5 of another etc.. then the 3 that look alike are the same,, the 4 and 5 also and etc etc...
buff orpingtons are easy.. even for color blind me.. banded legs,, that is a good idea.. why don't you send that one to all the hatcheries ??

wing sexing works on some breeds ,, vent sexing works on all breeds..

I am waiting for Annie to get home so I can be off to Fleet..

the guineas were singing up a storm this morning.. and the young Tom turkey was feeling "adventurous".. this next cold snap will put a damper on that for a few weeks..

I am wondering if I am going to do much hatching this spring.. last year I had such a hard time getting rid of birds.. (hence the 120 I am feeding all winter)..

I would still like to find a real nice barred rock rooster.. the one I have is just OK.. a little on the runty side.. and I don't like his bars.. sounds like I don't like him very much, doesn't it ?
I do,, but not as a breeder.. I think I will give craig's list a look-see..

remember folks,, ONE thermometer per incubator.. do not use 2 and average the temps.. I have a long explanation for this rule,, but just take my word for it for now..trust me..

that i don't get all roos!!!!! I may have gotten a bit tooo excited about getting colored eggs;-)

Thans sooo much for helping the newbie!!! When they arrive, I will post pics:-)

Just one ??? hmmmm,,, tape the seams with duct tape..

I knew you'd pick that one!

Good morning chicken folk--I am not supposed to be on here...supposed to be typing the "chore list" but I had to catch up right? Besides I was eating some LO scalloped potatoes from last night...

I hope you are feeling more agile today Cind! I hate pain too...one of the major reasons that I dont cheat on my GF diet. I used to have every joint in my body on fire...no gluten=no fire in the joints! Easy decision for me! It is rather amazing to me still!

My stuff is all in the car except the things that are in DS's room. I hope he wakes up soon or I am going to barge right in there! I am a little scared about how late my critters will be fed tomorrow...NO--DONT THINK ABOUT IT!

JJ I almost spit coffee on the puter with your comment about just making a mess! YES--I coud do with that many acres for sure! I would also be much wealthier because I wouldnt be spending $17 a bale of hay at TSC>LOL! Just kidding!!!!! Really though, hay is pretty high now and I am hoping I have enough to last until first cutting...the worst thing is that people that have hay even from LAST year are trying to get in on extra $$$ because of the drought.

OK--I better get going on that list...one more thing; be sure when you put your styro incubators in the sun to disinfect you dont have chickens anywhere close! I need two new bottoms for mine cause they ATE the corners off! Maybe I need to feed them more? They sure like to eat/peck at Styrofoam in any form!

I am bringing my computer along to the hotel (jealous that you had a scrapping retreat C!) so I dont get too far behind! We are at a SUper 8 this time....bringing my feather bed cause their mattresses are not so good!
Later all! TerriOwantingtoleaveatnoonwewillseehowthatworks

I think feather sexing is possible, but not on every breed. and it is not long or short it is a second set of primary feathers that are longer as opposed to all the primary feathers the same length.

I was 100% with cochins last year which was less than 2 dozen. ameraucanas not so much and crosss breeds where hopless.

look up feather sexing on youtube and do not watch any of the videos that statr with leather masks or handcuffs.

My cukoo marans where a breeze to sex grey are boys and black are girls black coppers may work like that too.
