Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Evening All....welcome jeline, alot of good help here as you can see. Glad to see that you are getting prepared before you start with peeps....smart move. Once you collect fresh eggs from hens you raised, you will be glad you made the big step to chickenhood. I think that's a word?

Good advice from everyone here. We have to be the smartest folks in the whole wide world! I wish grandma was still alive to see how many folks enjoy poultry today. She was born in 1900 and grew up with dirt floors in the house growing up and very poor money wise, but wealthy in country life with livestock and poultry and a happy life....she would be in heaven on here! just sayin.

Some of us stayin as CC said....where has MLH been? Did i miss her post recently?

costco broke the bank, but ended up with two new pillows and they are dreamy! I think I am going to have to go for swim tomorrow, going to be a beautiful day. I might be wearing chest waders but im going to get in and find some traps that were swallowed up by the ice.

well off to not think about typing and just surfing! have a great night and day tomorrow

Jetliner...where are you located? I will have speckled Sussex and silkies come spring that will be pure of the ones you are looking at. Carol will have jaerhans and duccles. I would love a Polish myself.

Well the girls are starting to lay again... Had about 8 yesterday and 6 today from my 14 girls. Best since fall.

Kristip - I didn't see anyone by the name of Jetliner, so I am going to assume you are referring to me (jelinek11)? since I asked about chicks. I am located near Wausau. How far away are you from Wausau. I might be interested in a speckeld Sussex and a silkie! :)

Celtic Chick - I am pretty much open to anything as long as they are docile and can handle being in just a run. We aren't able to let them free range very often.

So far the ones that have caught my eye are the Australorp, Brahma, Cochin, Easter Eggers, orpingtons, Polish, Rhode Island, Silkies, Sussex, & Wyandotte.

I am looking for good layers & some "lookers" :)

Any suggestions? :)
The only ones I have alot of experience with are the Australorps, orpingtons & banty cochins. I just adored my Aussies. Good, friendly girls that were also my best egg layers. And they are just beautiful in the sun with their irridescent black plumage (black orps have the same irridescence but much fluffier butts). My orps, actually all of my birds, are friendly to people, but for some reason my 2 buffs are really sassy to all the other hens. They are definitely at the top of the pecking order, followed by their 2 daughters. And orps are large birds. Aussies are slightly smaller, and Doms are a bit smaller yet. Orps also appear larger because their feathers aren't as streamlined to their bodies, making them fluffier looking.

I think brahmas are huge birds. Bigzio could tell you more about them. He adores his ladies.

GhostRider and Cindlady, among quite a few others, have EEs.

TerriO can set you up with some beautiful Aussies.

My sis has a Polish & all the other birds pick on him because of his "do".

I think you are going to have a lot of recommendations on here about a lot of different birds because we all love our chickens so. You should try to make a list of your most desirable characteristics in a bird & just compare them to the ones on your list. Since you only have 10 breeds listed, you can eliminate 2 and then get one of each of the rest.

ETA (Edited To Add): Aussies, orps, Doms, silkies and Polish all do well in runs.

Silkies do really well with confinement! Good choice..I have catdance silkies in my incubator now. The BLRW (Blue laced Red Wyandotte) originated in Wisconsin. I am working on getting chicks later this spring. I am hoping others would want some too. These are not hatchery quality though. A little more expensive.
