Hi, from Portage.

I love this website too. Also kind of addicting

I am currently a stay home mom and am thinking about hatching eggs and selling chicks. I am going to take the class to become a tester in the spring and our flock is currently certified. I just got a new leahy incubator that holds 500 eggs.

so of coarse my imagination is running wild

Anyways I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about breeds to do. We want to go with three. We're thinking dual purpose. Buff Orpingtons are one of the three. We also have welsummers and blue and black standard cochins. We are thinking about switching the cochins and possibly welswummers. The cochins are chicks though, so they'd be the easiest. We were thinking about going to barred rocks. I want to order my chicks soon, so they will be ready by march. We already have a nice breeding flock of ducks and guineas so that's taken care of

friskebluegills!

Maybe you could hatch out some of the endangered or critical heritage dual purpose breeds? It would be cool to have a source of unusual and rare chickens here in our own backyard!

Those silly ducks of mine, I tried to give them peas since I have heard on here ducks like peas. NOT! Those devils would rather eat the weeds I pull up, the slugs the kids find, or the minnows frim the bait shop! Maggie (the one I hatched) as started flying accross the yard to reach the big pond so I had to do a little feather trimming; Bonnie is soon to be the next one in line for a trim....

I cannot tell what the heck I have from the hatchery as far as sexes. I have a Cayuga, a Penciled, a Kaki/Buff, a Snowy, and I believe two greys. The ones that are mallard colored are all getting green feathers on their heads which makes me wonder if they are all boys..... I am pretty sure the penciled is a male, and the buff and cayuga are both females........ I hate this waiting to see, the kids want to name the little buggars and it is getting to be a pain calling them nondescript names!

Off to bed; night all!

, if you want to see a lot of great birds you are in luck one of the best poultry shows is in Portage, Sept 24-26, I'll be there. Are you goinhg to order from a hatchery?

Thanks for that info on the Portage show BCC. I think I will see if I can go to that one too. (Yeah, I need more birds like a hole in the head!) I have been checking out coops and am thinking I will get started on a few this week. My coop that I see in my head is elevated, has attached runs and can accommodate several varieties separately. I am not sure that I can accomplish this though...my brain cramps when I get to the roof part! Maybe I need to stick with just a building and pop doors...boring!

My welcome message to all the new folks got lost yesterday...so
welcome-byc.gif
--so gald you dropped in! I hope you become one of the regulars too! DrH--looks like you might have some competition for the earliest poster here...

About those heritage breeds...I have a neighbor that has 3 or 4 different ones. I have asked and hinted and begged her to come on here to no avail! I will email her and see what she has if anyone is interested in obtaining some of her birds. FriskeyBlue--I also was wondering if you will get your starters from a hatchery? It seems like the auctions for chicks and eggs go much better if you start with show stock and can say what lines they are from. (but maybe you know this already...just sayin' what I have observed)

Yesterday I cooked 6 dozen eggs for my flock and cooked another 6 dozen that will be pickled today! I still have 4 in the fridge for eating fresh...can you say, "Drowning in eggs?" Maybe I will make some devilled ones for my neighbor...was talking to her last night and she said that they were such a treat....

I am pretty sick of them! Sure wish I liked flan or egg custard or something....anybody have some good ideas?

Low on clients this week so I am cleaning one sold house and doing gardening for another that is being sold. Glad the humidity is down! Well, I better get to it! Got the inside fed...now for the outside and off to work! Have a fun and productive day everyone! Terri O

Dr HaHa, glad you liked the jelly. It does not last long in my house. If you want the recipe, just let me know. It's SO simple. It's cheating.

Another beautiful day. Working on cleaning the house and then....you guessed it.....pool.

Oh! We sold our pop up camper yesterday to some friends of ours.
smile.png
They are picking it up on Sunday. We've had A LOT of people ask if it was for sale. 7 people at our rummage sale alone. And then not to mention a few of our friends. Like 5!!! Now we are going to buy DH's mom's and step dad's 5th wheel.
celebrate.gif
So this week some time I need to take out the things I want to keep. The rest they can have. We're throwing in the microwave and the fridge goes with. (The fridge we put in. It came out of a semi.) I'm going to miss that camper.

Great memories there. But the new one will be even better!

Raimnel) Your poor garden!

DH put mine along the side of the house, which is the stupidest place for a garden...cept when it rains! Never any standing water, as we are kinda on a hill. So, thats the only plus to having it on the side. Any place you can move it next year to keep it from the swamps?

Hey guys, I didn't read everything, and doubt i'll be able to. But I was in Hartford all weekend for a wedding. We stayed in a MOtel because we are poor college students. Well, that was a bad idea. First the air didn't work. Okay, we can sweat it out big deal. Then it had flies. Tiny flies that want to land on your FACE! So we had to sleep with the blankets over our face to keep the flies away. Which was hot. And finally, I came home and I'm pretty sure the place had beg bugs. The last night we were there, my legs BURNED and itched so bad I barely slept. My legs are covered in what looks like welts and a rash. However, when I googled what a bed bug bite looked like, it didn't look anything like this. Never the less, DH had to get me cortizone creme for me to sleep last night.

Good news, our unemployment benefits went through, so we have unemployment again! Better news? It was retroactive back to when we lost it in June, and so we got a bunch of money. Was such a nice feeling to catch up on the bills!

I also disowned 3 family members (mom, sister and brother) after careful thought and consideration. It took a lot of tears and a lot of nerve, but it's the best for my family right now. All they do right now is inflict hurt and pain into others, and I can't have that negativity in my life. DH has a mom, a sister and a brother. Not the same as mine, but still family.

Morning All! And WELCOME friskiebluegills! Went out this morning to get ready to cut wood and I was looking at the slw's. Both L and had noticed that one with a lot of white on it's wings was the most dominate one of the whole bunch. Well I noticed that it was growing tail feathers that were longer than the rest. It's a roo! Was going to name her queenie but that's not going to work. Thinking a nap then make the dills.
