Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Long, busy week. Glad it's the weekend!

Update on my Muscovy, they never really moved beyond the internal pip stage. All but 3 of the 9 internally pipped, then nothing. I waited for a couple days, checked eggs and seemed like half were dead, half still moving but no peeping, no pipping and it was heading into the 3rd day since internal pipping. I made tiny holes and peeked in, the ones that looked dead were dead. The ones that were still moving (5) showed internal pips, did not appear too dry or wet, one had completely absorbed its yolk, two weren't quite absorbed, and two were upside down in the egg.

I opened the top on the one that was fully cooked and put him back. I opened the tops and gently rotated the chicks until the heads were up on the two, left the other two alone. Next day no progress, popped the tops on the them and left them, misted and nice humidity. Next day I had 3 happy chicks out, the two that were upside down had absorbed their yolks and heads were out, but had died.

Really didn't want to help them, sat on my hands until half of them died, but did manage to save 3. Not sure why they didn't pip externally. None looked too moist or too dry, they were spot on for weight loss during incubation. I'm just glad to have the three. Here they are, a couple days old now:

Sorry to hear about the ones that didn't make it, but those are the cutest things ever! If I had room, and I would love some ducklings. Thanks for sharing.

Good Evening- seems like all is well with most of you. Good to hear.
Chicks are having fun in there temporary brooder. I have them in a large clear plastic tote on a towel. Can I use straw instead? There is no way I am putting chicken poop in my washing machine, and I will run out of towels if I keep throwing them away. Went to the local feed mill and paid $10.60 for 50lbs of laying mash, and $16.80 for the same amount of chick starter. The mash they grind themselves, but the chick starter is some brand I never heard of- Prince. Anyone ever use this? I wonder why it's so much more than the mash- anyone know what is in it and maybe I could ask them how much it would be to make it for me.
Still loving up on the chicks. I love how they are all different looking. DD6 is not happy that her little yellow fluffball has a black dot on its back. She thought it was dirt

. I wish I knew who's eggs are who's. Oh well, I don't really care, and I think we could end up with some interesting chickens.
The 3 boys are at my parent overnight so it's just me and my daughter tonight. Too bad we have to wake up early for Poms Camp. Really wish I could sleep in.
Good Night All

Hi All!

Happy (late) Birthday to those missed.... Happy (early) Birthday to anyone coming soon!

DrH. Yep, Mom is long and lean but petite She reminds me of the Egyptian cats.

TO... nice stove! Hope it works out with your friend. Well, if your DH is going to come look at what burned.... he'll see allot of ice! Yea, not much left to it. Thank goodness they were able to keep it pretty contained. There are allot of other buildings there and homes around. What I was worried about was it's up against a wild life area. If things got out of hand, I'm sure they would have let that go in favor of saving any homes, even if the wind was going toward the preserve and away from the homes.

BBP... Nice looking duck, looks like he's posing!

denise.... when I got my chickens one of the first things I did was have hubby and the dog pee around the lot line! Such actions are still encouraged to male members of the family. I think it dose help for most critters. hummm.... men seem to like pissing contest. LOL Funny about the "soapy potion"! Sometimes it come to "whatever it takes"

Judge.... BABY CHICKS!!!

Most of us use paper towels at first. If you don't have or don't want to use paper towels try crumpling up some news paper then flatten it again. Thing is, you need a little traction for them. I would not use straw for at least a week.

Hurley....BABY DUCKS!

Well, this was "one of those days". Started out Young son wakes me up at 8:15 saying he didn't have time to bring wood in and there was only a few pieces left... he had to get to work. So I crank my eyes open after 3 hours of sleep. Get dressed and see he didn't give the chickens their mash or let them out yet
rant.gif
So, I layered up, fed the chickens, and brought in a load of wet wood. Stacked the wood by the stove so it would dry at least some.
Crawled back to bed but couldn't get to sleep 'till almost noon. Slept for 2 hours. Which made me 2 hours after I wanted to get up. So it's 2pm, found my "lost phone" and tried to get minutes on it (I was completely out) but had issues getting the numbers from the card right.
hmm.png
So, it was after 3 before I got to town. At least the van started.
yesss.gif
Got every red light, and a train trying to get to the other side of town.

Get to TSC and got some antibiotic for the turkey hen. That seemed to go OK. Went over to Wally world..and had a hard time trying to find a place to park. Finally got inside and no electric carts.

No, I can not walk it, I've tried! Finally someone was done with one so I took that and found out the battery was almost drained! So I shopped, plugged it in and sat. Shopped, plugged it in an sat....

At check out found out I had lost about $12 somewhere! Had to make 2 more stops and headed home. Got home just before 6. Went to go do night chores and close up birds, there was poor little Rose...dead!

She was the one the roos kept hurting. Don't know what happen, there was a little blood by her head.

Came in and went to throw the leftovers in to heat up for supper and realized that the older son decided to have leftovers for lunch! He NEVER eats leftovers for lunch! So I heated up some canned soup
sickbyc.gif
and heated up what was left of the leftovers and that was supper! Got more wood in and took a nap! (20 min.) Just too many bumps today on the journey of life!

NIGHT ALL!

Hurley, sounds like what I go through with my call ducks at every hatch. Only I don't sit on my hands. They get lots of help from me. It's stressful and heartbreaking when they die fully formed and internally pipped. It's common with calls though, because of their short beaks and short necks, not sure why it happened to your muscovies.

The girls are liking the longer days getting more eggs now per day.

Better get movin.

Yeah, I won't wait so long next time. Everything I kept reading said "don't worry, don't intervene, sometimes they just take a few days", but when they started dying I figured I wouldn't be doing them anymore harm than that. Something was wrong.

I don't know why they didn't pip, they were active as mad in the shell when I candled. Next time I won't wait so long to at least make a tiny pip hole and get them some air.

Just use paper towels, toss them every other day and put in new until they are ready for shavings. I believe Prince feeds are made in Marshfield. I've bought some of their bird seed in the past. Chick starter is usually more expensive, I paid closer to $20 for my last bag of chick starter.

Love the cute ducky pics!! Sorry you lost some. It's hard to just stand by and not help at all.

good AM,

DD#1 was here yesterday with her son.. they decided to blow the goose eggs.. So I went tnd showed them the procedure I use.. we formed an assembly line,, I drilled 2 holes, she held the egg over the pan and grandson pumped the air.. It was not long and we were all finished.. we ended up with one of those large round bottom metal mixing bowls about 3/4 full of egg..

I heated up the skillet and ran a soup mixer through the eggs to break up the "strininess".. then I used a coffee mug and began frying omelets.. I ended up with two stacks about a foot high..

the birds will be getting treats for a few days..

Now I would like to sell the blown out shells.. I suppose craig's list will be my first attempt..
how much should I ask for them ?? we must have well over 100 of them..

I took the pup to the vet yesterday.. they tried to make him pee.. no success there.. so she gave me some antibiotics to try.. figured it was crystals or a urinary tract infection..
the same conclusion that Annie had made..
yah, whatever.. $54.00

the pup is up to 55 pounds ..he is as tall as Dora, but not as long..
