Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Annarie, I posted pics of the calls a few pages back. Any insight on colors would be a great help! I also have another question; do the male greys start out like the felames but with a dark green tinge to the head feathers?

Back from camping! We were at the Vista Royale campground just outside Bancroft. Nice place! A little crowded for the weekend campers, we were all on top of each other, but a great place for the kids! Big pond for swimming, nice playground, mini golf, a rec room for the kids and adults, a seperate fishing pond, very nice place! Only thing I recommend is they remove the poison ivy!!!!

Off to take a nap and a very needed SHOWER. Later!

Annarie thought about it after I submited didn't mean to be glad yours were in the same shape as ours. We got ours from a local garden center but who knows where they all originated from. Like you think it's too late for them and they do have a fair amount of fruit on them. But would like more for L's famous sauces and salsa. Guess it'll be buy as needed this winter.

Will lime this fall thanks for the tip! Wow I'm avoiding work today. Hope it goes away. Tomorrow.

Dr HaHa - Oh, I know, it didn't come off that way at all!

A blight sucks, but I'm relieved to hear that someone else is having the same problem - now I don't feel like it's just us killing them here!

Ah! I don't know how I missed those pictures! Must have skipped a few pages while I was catching up yesterday!

Wow, they're all gorgeous! Have I shared pictures of mine lately? I don't think I have - here they are, the Calls and their two eldest Runner siblings (all wet from swimming in the pic):

So, the Calls from AlpineRanch (mine, and your Bonnie) are Blue Bibbed (the could, possibly be Pied...Pied and Bibbed are just two different White-pattern genes, the combination of the two of them together is Magpie), but they're heterozygous for something else, because there's that faint brown penciling on some of the feathers, and my little Sprinkles even has a pale brown patch on the side of her face!

Maggie is a really deep Blue Bibbed, just stunning...with the Grays, yes the males look like the females in juvenile plumage. The best way to sex them (besides voice) at that age is to look at the feathers on the top of their rump, above the tail. In females, they'll be the same color as the rest of the body, but on males they'll be darker and have a green sheen. In your pictures, I see a male and two females in the Grays. The lighter one definately isn't a Pastel (Pastel and Apricot are the same color - Pastel is what it's called in the US, it's called Apricot in the UK), but she could be a Light-Phase Gray - are her eye-stripes any different from the other two?.

The one I find really interesting is Taffy...that's WAY too "blue" for a proper Apricot (although it may very well genetically be an Apricot) - it's more Silver or Lilac...really neat looking.

Just for fun, if you go to the National Call Breeders Association Website and look in their store, they have a series of posters with pictures of almost EVERY color Call duck - you can click on the posters and view them larger. Here's the link: http://www.callducks.org/the_store.html

Oh annarie you should have seen the giddy dance I did when I read that you are going to hatch chicks from those cochins!

Guess DH will have to build another coop for me.

Just wait till he gets home and I tell him. DrHa I'm hoping that some of those eggs are penciled and then I'm taking a trip up to you. You should never deny yourself chickens. You've talked about wanting them, you might as well have them. At least that's how I work. Ok has anyone hear of coturnix quails? There is a lady that has had a posting on CL for awhile and I think they are so cute. Does anyone have any expericence with them? Let me know. K I'm off again!

Thanks so much Annarie! Your babies from Alpine make me sad for Clyde..... they look so much like him! The color names I used were from the efowl web site since I have no idea what I am talking about here......

Does the smell of smoke ever leave ones hair??????? I just can't get the smell out!

Tomatoes are just starting to fruit, peppers look good but no fruiting that I can see yet. Carrots and beets going strong, leeks look good...... and of course those crazy ducks are growing like mad. I swear they are all the same size now; those babies grew a lot over the past 2 days!

I have to say I am so HAPPY to no longer have the stress of that job monkey on my back!!!! Now I just need to settle down for a few days and clean the house!

Barely still good morning everyone! KAQ I love baby kittens! Stay away from me! Glad it all worked out so to speak. BL4 Sounds like you had a good time camping and are really enjoying your ducks. I'm waiting to see you run a muck when you move.

PS men of the woods love that smell in a ladys hair. Becky without doing some investigating, [now I'm going have to] thought penciled were from a slightly different gene pool. Aren't those the quail with the cute little dingleberry on the tops of their heads? Annarie just hate to think of buying maters this winter. It's just wrong! Guess we just have to be thankfull for what we get, over all everything else is doing very very well! Best crop of carrots we've ever had. Could have gone back to bed at 5 but have things to do. It seems that Bigzio was right it takes 3- 4 months for retirement to sink in. I'd love to sleep later but like the early mornings too. Had to check to see if my monthly stipend had been deposited in my bank account. It was so got to go shopping. Got various gases. None for me thanks I have enough. Did a major grocery! Most of the canning supplies were gone but we're covered for the short term. And last but certainly not least beer. Life is good! Was heading to woods till it rained so plan B is in full swing. Still need to replant some more lettuce and am going to try and fire up the motor that came with the boat plus a few minor million other things. Notice how they became minor after mention of the boat. Hate to even look at the beans and I just picked them. There is no way a person can go outside and not have squito spray on unless your at a dead run. WOW! Need to get some dragonfly and bat eggs in the bator next. Thinking this morning that the rest of the wood making is going to wait until we get a frost. [boat/fishing] BCC I really need to know how long, I mean L wants to know how long on those banana peppers? It's just killin her! I'm getting greased up and heading outside if you don't hear from me ever again kill every squito you see for the rest of your lives. Thanks!

DrHa the silver pencils I have are cochins. That is just one of the colors they come in. I don't think it's a popular on though, because I don't see it often. I'll get you some pictures and you can see what you think. No those aren't the quail that have the dingleberries. Those are cute too. These are the ones that are slightly bigger than button. They look like other quail, minus the top hat. They are suppose to be the most domestic and social. I really would like to have some but you have to house them away from your chickens because chickens can spread disease to them that they can't fight off like other chickens can. At least that's what I've read so far. They have alot of information on them in the quail section of BYC. It was good reading. DH wasn't thrilled when I said I wanted some. He just said whatever and rolled his eyes. He just doesn't understand. That's ok as long as he lets me.

Well got to go.

Well it is FINALLY done!! ducks got to enjoy their new home on Friday! Friday night we had to put everyone to "bed". on Sat night 3 went to bed on their own, we had to put 1 to bed. and last night (Sun) 1 was still out but when we went to put her to bed the other 3 came out and she was like "OH THERE you are!!" and they all went to bed before we got to them! YAY!! No shown in the pic.... we added a ducky door that works like a giliteen (sp?) Hopefully that never happens! anyways gotta make beans for a church pot luck tonight. later!

Here's some pictures of my hen and roo. I have another hen but she was beening camera shy.
All three are super sweet. Bruno is my favorite. He is the nicest chicken I have right now. Comes and sits on my lap and we talk. Family thinks it's hilarious.
