Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Welcome back to the world of the living BL4! I cannot believe you guys went out to do pics today! I got a frantic call that they needed help in the kitchen at the retirement center and I went gladly on my day off...just so I could enjoy the AC for an hour or two! So now I am back sitting near the fan typing away. I am trying to get up the gumption to take a better fan out for the chickens--their box fan wasnt doing much in the coop today.

Well Annarie--I guess those ducks just arent as smart am my 'skovies

they stick so tight to the nest it is crazy! But you did say that it was unusial for yours to even be broody...did that hen really "steal" eggs or did the other ducks just lay them in her nest? I am trying to picture her rolling eggs out of another nest, down the barn isle and into her own nest!

What a sight! Thinking hard about those drakes....

I stopped at the library today and got a new book and am seriously thinking about going upstairs to lay under the fan and read...and maybe nap! Oh oh--DrH must be wearing off on me!

One of my parrots is doing a weird thing with his beak--I hope he doesnt have anything stuck in there...better check it out! Later! Terri O

DrH, maybe your not putting a space between the picture's words and what your typing??? you know when you copy and paste the picture code then you type...... try hitting the space bar?! maybe that's it???

here ya go DrH

you also tried putting in 2 pictures??? did you put a space between both pictures? I couldn't get the second picture.... all the code wasn't there?! no dragging is needed.... click on picture code, it highlights, right click click on copy, hit the X to leave that page click in your comment where you want the picture to display then right click and click on paste. making sure you have a space before and after the picture code.

very cute BTW!!

Thanks Raimnel I know I didn't space after pic! That's just the pattern on the paper towel. Man it's nasty outside!

LOL!!!!! I LOVE that pic Dr. H!!!!!! Poor baby! I hope you helped that buggar out of that shell!

Reminds me of the old Bugs Bunny cartoons!

Glad to hear your feeling better BL4! I thought of that toon too! Will get more pics soon. Ya thought about calling it Spotty. Yes I spent the whole day cracking and gently lifting pieces off it, still has piece on it's back. Going to moisten it and give it try. The shell would come off leaving the membrane so I used small scissors to cut it.

Oh ick, babylady4! Sucks to be sick in the summer, especially when it's already so miserable and sticky outside! And good luck with that cat!

Dr H - I've been working on that bloody egg from this morning all day today, and he looks a LOT like that chick right now! He wants out, but he's not quite ready yet. I think I'll have him out before bed tonight, and he can go hang out in the brooder with his siblings.

Terri - Yeah, Campbells aren't supposed to go broody. The instinct has sort of been bred out of them - they've been selected for high egg production, and only hatched artificially or by a "surrogate" broody for so long...this is a quote from Wikipedia: Khaki Campbell hens very seldom will hatch out their own young. Brooding behavior has been sacrificed in exchange for prolific egg laying ability in this breed. Mechanical incubators or broody chickens are used to hatch out Khaki Campbell ducklings....so, my girl is a freak of nature.

EDITED TO ADD: Yes, she was stealing the eggs. I got up one morning and there was an egg over in the corner of the pen opposite her nest, I left it there and went back a few hours later, and it was gone, but there was an extra egg underneath my crazy Khaki!

Going to pick up some nice rabbit hutches tomorrow morning that I'm going to convert into Call duck pens (did you ever have any luck finding a better housing solution for yours, BL4?), and maybe I'll stick my Japanese Bantams and a few Cochins in there too. The newest Blue Mottled Cochins laid two eggs yesterday (which, for those of you wanting to know about their laying ability, are the FIRST eggs I've seen from my SQ Cochins since I got the first 3 over a month ago)...I don't even know if they're fertile, but I'm toying with the idea of throwing them in the 'bator to see...

Too bad that little baby wasnt running around or at least standing up with that shell on! It looks so funny....sure glad you got her out OK!
I cleaned out the parrot cage and the finches today. Gave the Button Quail a place for a dust bath. OMG--I think she thinks she has died and gone to heaven! She dusted and dusted and now is sleeping!

Man can that little girl lay eggs! One a day faithfully...she is definitely a better layer than most of my chickens! Edited to add: I guess that's why they dont sit on their eggs too Annarie? (actually I dont have any idea...)
I am drinking ice water and trying to think of something to make for supper. Not hungry--it is way too hot! Maybe just popcorn and a movie again.

Tomorrow Raiquee is coming to visit for her birthday! If it wasnt so darn HOT I would bake her a cake!
I finally got the canning jars off of my counter tops and organized on the shelf. Here is the result so far:

The plums and the corn relish arent from this year...and my beans are still cooling...I kinda LIKE this staying home stuff!
Well...gotta get the new sheets on the bed. I cant believe that I didnt hang out sheets today; I confess, I was not going to get bitten up by the bugs!
