Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I use a #2 pencil,,  but I think under a hen, the pencil might get rubbed off..

I am against using magic marker to write on eggs,, but something like just a dot might not do any harm.. ?  or maybe crayon would be better ?

I get eggs written on all the time. Never had an issue with it. Hasnt reduced my hatch rates any. chicks seem fine. Pencil does wear off or get so wiped off it isn't viewable. Crayon also rubs off under a hen.

will do -thanks!

There is a 4H swap in Waupaca this coming Saturday, I'm told. There should be a lot more than just a bunch of bunnies at this one. I'm going to drag myself up early once again and go.

Quote: I had this discussion a few years ago.. got kicked off byc over it, so I am going to say this and no more.. I had a complete zero% hatch of 23 turkey eggs because of, and all that I can think of ,, was they were written on by me with a black felt tipped marker.. I do believe that those felt tipped markers that you can smell the solvent are toxic to the air cell in the egg.. HeII, it even takes my breath away.. may I just suggest that if you use them, go ahead and use them, but please don't advise anybody else to do so..

What about using a "china marker" AKA "grease pencil"??

my advice is,, use what ever the heII you want to use.. I am going to use #2 pencil. I have hatched thousands of eggs with it and I have no worries about it..

If i use a crayon, I could just put a stripe on them. maybe i should just separate her. Also now that I have one broody, several others seem to want in on it. whats the best way to stop all this moody broody nonsense! thanks for all the advice.
How do you know when a hen is truly broody? I have one that sits on up to 10 eggs all day. She got off the other night to roost though. Is that how you know? Just go out at night and see if she left?

you look at her when she is in the nest,, if she is facing to the left, broody.. if she is facing to the right, not broody,, if she is facing either to the front or the rear, she can't make up her mind..

and remember this,, today is April 1 .........
